I'm Irish so have been taking a keen interest in how Martin Clarke has been getting on with Collingwood. His first bit of game time this year was pretty impressive for someone who had probably never kicked a footy until this time last year.

Do you think we will get to see much of him in the AFL this season or is he going to be kept under wraps?
 
I doubt he will at senior level, unless another major injury occurs later in the year, and we are in a "play the kids for the pick" mode.

Actually, based on that, he probably will play senior footy this year. :(
 
He appears to be being deliberately held back somewhat. He played on the weekend for Willy against Casey and had good reviews from a couple of attendees. Is finding plenty of it and using it by foot very well. Backs himself and runs hard with it into space. Kicked a goal and supposedly almost kicked another from 60 out.

He'll play VFL seniors immediately, which is in itself a fantastic achievement and indicative of his natural footballing ability. He won't be far away from AFL and may get a run quite soon, especially given two long term injuries.

Also, he is being groomed somewhat in a Heath Shaw style small defensive position.

He does strike me as a guy who can read the play and set up well, and looks to have good disposal and evasive skills. So Heath would be a good comparison :thumbsu:

Given from what I've seen of Martin Clarke at training I have very big wraps for the lad and I reckon he certainly does have something special going for him. He will play senior football .... but not this year. The reality is of course is that he's still learning the game and needs to put time in at Willy for the good of himself and the good of the club. Special talent or not he just doesn't have the on field experience to warrant being promoted in front of Nicholls, Wellingham or Macaffer.
 
Shazza's ahead of him for promotion, but I would like to see him play vfl as loose man in the middle, & see what happens.

You Pies fans must all be pretty stoked with how this young guy has turned out. Had him in my dream team at the start of the season but traded him after a few weeks when I didn't think he'd play much. After last week he has gone right back into my side.

Has there ever been a quicker and more successful introduction to the elite game as Marty Clarke enjoyed last weekend? Seemed a bit of a ball magnet, but also had the ability to hold off more experienced players.

Despite all the fun we have had with Marty, he is still a 2nd game player and as good as his debut was no use making total fools of ourselves just yet. Did you see him play 'over there'? No where near BOG despite being in top 5 possi getters. Keep playing him but.
 
Very few players are BOG in their first game, especially with only months of football of any sort to fall back on. It was a fantastic debut by any reckoning. :thumbsu:

Yeah. And cash deprived clubs like the Kangas will never have their own, little Irish star.

Imagine the fundraising that would have to go on to get one plane ticket.
