Its time to get off Mattners back (maybe thats why it was damaged at the start of the year) and give him our support. After a quiet start he played another good game today, this time mainly on the wing. His kicking to position and long kicking into the forward line were very effective. Those people who have a go at him for not hitting targets need to get this tape and watch it closely. Give him time to mature and gain confidence and you will see how important it is to have a 189 cm player who can tackle well, have good pace and kick long playing on a wing or half back flank. He gives another dimension to our half back line and our side in general. followers of this board will know since joining Big Footy i have been a fan of the boy! I know he can play.

And remember he has now laid two big tackles on star players resulting in unfortunately long stays on the sidelines- Robert Harvey and now Shane Crawford. He is the new hitman of the Crows.

When the boy tackles, he really tackles alright. That was possibly the most iron clad tackle I've seen for many a long day on Crawford.

His career might have been far far better if the coach had taken your advice and used him either as a wingman or HB flanker than as a tagger.

He did well on Saturday for all the reasons that you said. Let's hope he carries that good form on.

Maybe Jonas can do wonders for Marty :).

We want Jonas as a development manager at AFC next year!!!!!!:D
I think Jonas has bigger ambitions.

I'm too lazy to type up my opinon on the guy again, so here's my copy and paste from the votes thread:

I'll put my hand up and say I've been hugely critical of Mattner in the past, but I've also strongly believed he had previously been used in the wrong role. I like seeing him play as an attacking player on the wing, rather than given a job like against Woey or Harvey last year. Today he was given a bit of freedom and it paid off. While he can be frustating at times, you can never doubt his committment and courage, he always goes at the ball and the body 100%.

Might just follow suit & do a copy & paste ;)

Most juniors are up & down until they establish themselves in the side & like you have been pleasantly surprised by the form of Bock.

Stiffy, you are wrong on Mattner (doesn't happen very often though ) as i have said before, give me someone who is prepared to back himself & run the line any day & young Mattner is definitely not short in doing that, he might get caught or turn the ball over now & again but even that will improve with time & is surely worth his place in the side.

Like the way young Schuback can kick long "DOWN THE CORRIDOR"

Grab a copy of the 2002 SANFL Grand Final, Marty runs down the members wing and bangs a goal from the 50m arc, he has the ability, it needs to be developed, and its just starting to come to fruitition. Not much better site than seeing raking left footers!

Mattner is underrated on this board.

He's not a great player by any stretch but people tend to focus on players possession count and their "offensive" abilities. Mattner is prone to some clangers but he is far from bad with his disposal. As has been mentioned in this thread he often disciplined and effective with his long kicking.

But most importantly his toughness at the ball and his ability to lay effective tackles should not be underestimated. Mattner is like many fringe players. Playing well he can be very important to our side and playing poorly he can be a bit of a liability. On current form he is deserving of a spot in the team.

Many players can run the lines and gain uncontested possessions and dispose of the ball cleanly. There are not many players who can influence a game with their tackling alone and Mattners tackling and hard stuff inside is a great asset for our team.

I think his criticisms have come from the bad run of games he played last year and he definately was struggling for form at that time. He should've been dropped. The fact that he wasn't I think showed how highly the coaching staff rate his hardness. But now he is playing with some form and he is deserving of game time. I think we should give him a go.

Top comments ****, agree completely.

I think that was mattner's best game for the club so far.

Despite the fact there was nothing deliberate about it, I'm pretty sure the lad is feeling a bit down about that.

Is marty Mattner eligible to win a rising start nomination or is he to old or played to many games.

Both too old and too many games

Its a pitty that Hentschel is too old for a nomination. He would have got one by now and would have been a good chance of taking home the award at the end of the year

i wouldnt have thought so...hasn't set the world on fire...he's held his own! but not enough to warrant the AFL Rising Star of The Year Award...

will b leading AFC's most improved atm tho and deserves all the credentials that come his way...looks like he is taking everything on board that he is learning from the players he plays on week to week...will b a very quality palyer for the AFC...fingers crossed!

To get nominated you have to be consistently good and top it off with one very good game. Hentschel has done this. He has only had 1 average game so far this year. His game against Richmond would have got him a nomination if he was eligable. To win the award yo need a bit of luck and consistency. Hentschel is consistent which is a bit unusual for a young inexperienced player.

We don't have that award but if we did he would be leading it. I reckon he has just about stitched up the "Emergeing Young Talent Award". Other youngsters have had better games here and there BUT Hentschel has been consistently good and his disposal is one of the best in the side.

At last his supporters are coming out of the woodwork.
I could never understand the negative comments, most of which were initiated due to Ayres trying him as a tagger, which he failed miserably at.

Doesnt mean the lad doesnt have football ability, and crikey he's still only 21!

Saw Macleod get carved up by Farmer in a BP oneday (when Farmer was still with Melbourne). If Macleod was give simialr roles on the number of occasions Mattner did, Macleod would have copped it just as much.

Can't put a round peg in a square hole;)
