i dont know where you've got your info from simo, i can guarantee you that

A) there is no committee set up for a merger
B) bushy are not broke
C) the committee at bushy of balzan grogan and the likes will not go down without a fight if anything does happen. if they're around, i doubt anything will happen.

I have heard the same thing Johnny is Simo's defence. Consensus around town is that Bushy are struggling and a merger for next year is very likely. I'm fairly certain I have even heard a few Bushy boys say it is inevitable also!

Hey there. Um just wondering if anyone knows a guy called Seamus McKinley?? I think he played for Carisbrook. Just wondering how did he go as a footballer... Cheers

Good honest hard footballer..... Foot skills not always the best but is courageous and has a great set of hands. Depending on his fitness would be a handy player in most senior lineups.

Have you heard a Rovers player say that? They've recruited well, have decent numbers to fill all 3 footy sides. Why would they want to merge with Bushy?

Yes Rovers are going along ok. Bushy is the issue. They have struggled for junior and reserve grade numbers for many years and have a dwindling supporter base. If Bushy could not go on for whatever reason the most obvious team for them to merge with is Rovers. The alternative is to cease to exist so I would like to think that Rovers would entertain the idea rather than see a club die. The combined club,if handled correctly, has the potential to be very strong.

I dont think we can support the current amount of teams in and around Maryborough. What are other peoples thoughts?

IMO I don't think Bushy are struggling much at all. They haven't had much recent sucess on the field as some other teams football wise but there netball are always top 3. If you talk about Bushy and Merging/Folding in the same sentence surely there are 2 or 3 teams in this league that are far worse off.

Same goes for Rovers.

That is true Roger but there is just too much chatter round the traps about it at the moment not to have something too it...

It didn't take Creek long to shut up shop so things can turn very grim in less than 12 months.

Bushy are losing a heap of players but they will get through this. From what I have heard I would be expecting 2-3 teams to be very lucky to field reserves teams this year.

Rovers are financially and member strong. I couldn't see them entertaining the idea of merging at this point in time. They are recruiting well and could play a big role in finals.

Few of us will know exactly where they sit financially. From my perspective isee them as struggling as they struggle for player numbers. Their netballers also have started to struggle over the last couple of years if you check the results Rog. Now.... on field success doesn't = off field success but their own members will tell you they struggle to find volunteers to help out around the club and they seem to have bugger all supporters.

That is just my point of view and I'm happy to be shot down. I sort of agree with Simo in the fact that I have heard a lot of people comment on a possible Bushy/Rovers merger.

I think the difference is Roj that I dont think Maryborough can support as many teams as we currently have. I know Newstead, Trentham and Creek are struggling but they aren't really in the Maryborough demographic and are struggling for a variety of reasons. Just my opinion.

The writing has probably been on the wall for some time that a city of 8,000?? People can not sustain the number of teams that Maryborough does.

Using Ararat as an example. A town of similar size to Maryborough.

Not so long ago (90’s) they had the Ararat Rats (Wimmera FL), and 4 other minor league teams in the city itself.

That was then cut down to 1 Major and 2 Minor league teams for a couple of years.

And currently there is the Rat’s in the Wimmera league and the Eagles in the Lexton Plains.

There is also a number of clubs around the outskirts pulling on players from within Ararat as well.

I am not sure whether a Rovers-Bushy merger is the answer or not, but I do think that Bushy has lacked some professional type of leadership within their committee in recent years.

There is a number of ex Bushy people that are highly regarded professional business people in Maryborough that are no longer involved at Bushy. (Kel Noonan, Michael Egan, Wayne Belcher, Stan Gowers to name a few)
These guys could make a world of difference if they were to get back involved with their old club.

Balzy is a very capable person and hopefully he and his new crew will be able to get things going in 2008.

season 08 isnt that far away for everyone[/quote]

Only eight weeks if the season starts on time. Avoca will kick off its season on Sat 15th March with a practice match against YCW at Avoca. The following week 22nd March will be Easter. This will be followed by a road trip to the other side of Ararat to play Moyston/Willaura on 29th March. The weekend after, 5th April, sees the season underway.

How quickly did that come around again?

Not too much actvity to date on the transfers list. What happens to the players that played during 2006? Do they automatically return to creek or do they need to seek clearances to return to their former club now that it has re-formed.

Most were cleared away so they will need to be cleared back. Anyone that wasn't cleared away will just need to be re-registered as per normal.

Last I heard Creek had reasonable numbers on track but weren't overly confident of getting a reserves side together. Should field a senior side though

Was just wondering fellas, what the membership numbers would be in this league?
Eg; Trentham, would they have more than 150 members, is that an average or way too high? Avoca, would they get a base of 200? Is Carrisbrook the leading membership way?

The Heathcote thread reads that the Heathcote Saints get about 170 members for this season. I would have thought this figure would be a bit low for that club?

Lastly, what would the club number membership be in the Bendigo or Ballarat leagues?

How's that groin of yours wonker...???? hope you didnt strain it too much running laps of the trotting trap last friday night....:D:D:D did you get a good view from up there on the hill.....:thumbsu:

Yeh saw a bit - you stood out with your recently acquired suntan. Your own skills looked pretty good for this stage of the season. Sends a bit of a shudder through the opposition. Got a couple of big bodies this year - the result of the festive season one would think. The ground is looking a bit better and is sporting about two more blades of grass than it did this time last year. Also saw the new Jayco that has moved into the caravan park - has lifted the standard a bit. Good numbers though Sherman around the 32 - 34 mark. The ripped calf muscle is slowly coming good. It has made it a big week lugging those big bottles of water about on one leg.

HAHAHAHA!!! Aren't u getting a bit old to be hiding in the bushes spying on training Wonker??? LOL

Luckily we had the Smiths reflecting the sun off their bodies to blind you for most of the session!!

As for our oval.... yes to most other normal people it looks shocking.... but compared to what we are used to it's in better than normal knick so we are excited! :)

I would say Brook and Avoca would have the most. No idea what anyone would have though in all honesty. Are we counting memberships as just supporter memberships??? No idea in all honesty.

Reasonably happy with your recruiting thus far Wonker?? 2 very handy types and 2 good depth players. Bit of height and a bit of run. Will they fill the holes you have lost from last year?

Probably end up losing about 8 or 9 from last year's grand final side so recruiting is a must for Avoca to remain competitive. It is pleasing though to see that many of our youngsters have continued to improve and wll once again form the nucleus of the team.
I did see where Dallas Coghill's first clearance was refused. You might be able to put a good word in for us up Wedderburn way. Any mail on Dalls, King?
