The final race of the Indycar series at Las Vegas has been marred by a massive crash involving 15 cars. Will Power was involved and therefore has lost the title. Franchitti wins.

Most importantly though is the health of Dan Wheldon. Taken to hospital in a helicopter.

It looks like his car landed right in the middle of the fireball from another car. Not sure whether that had anything to do with his death or just the impact itself. Either way, it's a terrible thing to see.

RIP Dan Wheldon - 2011 Indianapolis 500 Champion.

thats the worst indycar accident i've seen since greg moore. just highlights the dangers of oval racing unfortunately - as unfortunate as it is, because i find it pretty entertaining.

RIP Dan Wheldon

I thought about the Moore crash as well this morning after watching it. And to think yesterday I was watching the F1's and thinking how safe motorsport is now.

Will Power was the second most injured driver in the crash, and is being treated for back pain at the moment in hospital.

Hope it's not too severe, that crash was just horrible, and they will surely have to change the way that sport is run, they were trying to race 4 wide into a turn at high speed, just stupid.

Wheldon was also supposed to come down to the Gold Coast this week to partner James Courtney, apparently James has known him for a fair while.:(

[Wheldon was scheduled to race in this weekend's Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercar event as reigning driver's champion James Courtney's co-driver.

The Holden Racing Team ace was one of many to use social network Twitter to express their shock at the two-time Indy 500 winner's death.

"RIP Dan. My thoughts and love to Susie, Seb, Oliver, Clive, Sue and the whole Wheldon family at this tragic time," Courtney tweeted.

Really sad, worst way to possibly end a season.

Motorsport is ****ing dangerous, you can lose a finger, or lose your life. These guys put themselves in mortal danger to race and entertain us and that's why we love them.

RIP.

Incredible this hasn't happened sooner sadly.

If you've followed the category these last 5 or so years , you'll know that the racing on these " superovals " is just ridiculous and it's only because of the standard of driving that this hasn't happened numerous times.

How's your form , winning the Indy 500 and losing your life in the same season.

I must admit I did cry a little. He was a terrific bloke and he did not deserve this. I certainly hope the other drivers get over their injuries aswell. I was looking forward to him racing in Australia this weekend...such a great driver.

This is terrible news and a timely reminder that motorsport is dangerous and never will be 100% safe. RIP Dan Wheldon :(

1920 Gaston Chevrolet
1929 Ray Keech
1946 George Robson

With Keech, it was within a few weeks! You'll find there is a lot who lost their life within a few years.

I was just chatting with my brother about this, and it occurred to me, the only reason he was in the race in the first place was because he was part of some $5 million chance prize after winning the Indy 500, if he'd finished second, he wouldn't have been a starter. When you think that Hildebrand's last corner accident was so pissy that it shouldn't have happened, you know what I'm saying...

I didn't want to post too any pics of Wheldon's car, but this one of Power shows how lucky he was to basically walk away from it.

The onboard shot from Will Powers car shows him first crashing into the catch fence and then fire engulfing everywhere around his head.

Scary stuff.

Edit: This one

Also lucky the wheel tether held on because it was coming straight at his head.
