At the current time are the three most favoured midfielders after Cotchin, just wondering who people rate higher and who people think will be the better player?

Masten is a ball magnet who makes the right decisions and runs all day but there are question marks over his kicking and pace.

Grimes can play forward, back and in the midfield, is a born leader who also knows how to find the ball but isn't really viewed as an elite prospect, like his Knights teammates Cotchin and Kreuzer.

Then there's Ebert who I don't know much about and haven't seen play, but from all reports hes a skilled player who plays forward and midfield.

how can u say masten is slow. One of his main attributes is his pace. I dunno how this misconception of his pace started from, but its false.

Masten was a national champion as a junior in 400m, 800m and 1500m before he quit to focus more on football. He also held a number of state records.

I'm more concerned about his lack of kicking penetration and his relatively light frame. Right now he's a great stoppage player (propbably his most attractive asset for me along with his gut running) but I'm worried that he won't become big enough to be able to win contested ball in that fashsion at AFL level due to being outmuscled by opponents (although he might be one of those guys who is light framed but naturally extremely powerful). What are others thoughts on this as I am definately no recruiting expert?

I didn't think anything of his pace at all. Didn't notice him as being overly quick or slow when I watched the game on saturday, but thought it best to mention it in the thread merely because so many people on this site label him as slow.

That myth is now busted though, so thankyou :)

Ebert = the whole package.

The other boys are great players and will have great futures Im sure, but not as big as this kids. Can literally play anywhere on the field. The only thing to question about Brads game is his kicking on some occassions.

Living in Adelaide though have you seen very much of Masten or Grimes? Or are you just assuming he's better than them because you rate him highly?

Ive seen Grimes play about 5-6 games and he's a great player but I don't think he's got the versatility in his game to play a key position like Ebert. I'll admit that I saw the first half of the WA vs Vic Metro game on Saturday and that was the first time I'd seen Masten play so I may be jumping to conclusions in saying that Ebert is the best of the 3 but again Im not entirely sure that Masten could play key position either.

Is Ebert a good stoppage player ? Does he go in hard? When I saw him play in the SANFL he seemed to hang off the packs a little but this might just be nerves.

Sounds a little simon black like? I think he was a champion 400m runner with question marks over his pace, with a light frame. Would that be a fair comparison?

I'm not sure whether he was refering to draft positions or carnival performances but it was very interesting to here Mike Sheehan say that Ebert is probably the best of the midfielders at this stage.

I've only Ebert play once so can anyone who's seen more of him answer these questions for me (I'd be really grateful):

1. Are his footskills a large concern? Are they worse than that of Grimes and Masten?

2. Also, how is his decision making with the ball? Does he turn it over often?

3. How is his stoppage work? Can he play as that hard at it, clearance winning, in and under mid (which is what Carlton need)? I noticed that he was hanging off the packs a bit in the SANFL but this might just have been nerves.

4. How is his speed and fitness?

5. What position will he most likely play at AFL level? Will it be in the centre square? Is he any chance to go top 3 in the draft?

Thanks in advance :D

I have seen Masten a few times in the WAFL, and Simon Black would be a good comparison. Masten is a hard working, consistent clearance player. If there is one thing that he lacks, it is that X-factorish break the game open ability....

masten is very very quick...his best asset is his hard running...he is a national running champion
he is also quite strong for his size...bit like judd...holds up in the packs against bigger players quite easily

also forget to say that masten has a very natural kicking action and forwards eyes light up wen he gets the ball

Masten said in an article that he has modelled his playing style on Ben Cousins, for those who have seen him play, does his playing style actually remind you of Ben Cousins? In comparison, would he be more like Simon Black or Cousins?

He runs really hard like Black and Cousins but probably plays more like Black in that he wins a lot of clearances and get a lot of the ball in close. Cousins is more of a receiver.

Does anyone know whether Chris Masten is part aboriginal or not? I have read on Big Footy where he is, and on another thread someone posted that he is'nt. Which is correct?

white, hes more athlete then footballer, potential is a big word, but he has horrid disposal by foot, to the point he changes his game so he doesnt have to kick it, not a good sign

I would much rather Grimes than Masten & Ebert mostly because of footy smarts and workrate. He seems to be one of those players in the mold of Murphy/Selwood in terms of work rate and professionalism. I personally would strongly consider taking him over Cotchin if I was a recruiter although he probably is not as talented.
