chelsea were very ordinary. back 4 routinely a mess, not much presence in midfield. fabregas completely invisible, costa moaned more than he had touches. hazard was hazard but with very little help around him. courtois will be a big loss and if gomis can get in behind that much, imagine kun and sterling if chelsea are that loose again

Melts are always entertaining, but it's match day one, don't really think it's much to be concerned about. But you can see both Spurs and United need to do some work. Whether that will just all click together through match fitness as the season goes on, or they actually need more players, we shall see.

Some good goals overnight too, great hit from Barkley. One of the Norwich goals was good too, as well from Mahrez.

The Courtois sending off is an interesting one. Was he last man? Was it a goal scoring opportunity? Was it in the box, and in turn is that a penalty? Should have been a yellow and a penalty? Or just a yellow and a free kick?

The picture above is definitely an interesting case in proving it's not a red card. Decision is done and can't be changed - but have we seen an important refereeing decision already affect two sides in their first game of the season?

The position of the ref is important as well when considering those factors.

If Gomis isn't impeded by the goalkeeper there's no way the covering defender gets anywhere near that ball. Clear goalscoring opportunity.
The ball is going away from goal. Is that really a clear goal scoring opportunity?

Because he's going around the keeper and he's about to have an empty net to aim at. It's not as though the ball is going in the opposite direction to the goals.

I can understand the argument but I think it's the correct decision.

Get what you're saying, but if the angle is tight, despite being an open goal - is it still a clear goal scoring opportunity?

All very subjective at the end of it all.

Clear goalscoring opportunity for me. Closer to the goal line and/or a tighter angle and it wouldn't be.

Nothing controversial about the decision.

Gomis has to run diagonally away from goal, settle, then shoot. Cahill has to run in a straight line at the goal and block any shot that occurs.

Definitely not a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Why does he have to settle? You have to imagine that he wasn't impeded at all by Courtois so he's still got full momentum and his next touch can be a shot at an empty net.
Settle = take a few steps to slow down, he wouldn't have hit it at full speed.

It can be a clear goal scoring opportunity if the keeper is in the net and you are fouled by a defender, why does Cahill standing on the goal line make it not so? Its not a guaranteed goal but its certainly a clear opportunity to score which Courtois takes away from him by the foul. Correct call for me.
