Matt McCarthey......

I've been extremely impressed by him, and at the start of the year I had actually earmarked him down as perhaps being someone the Eagles could target as an unknown trading coup during the 2003 off-season.

I don't know why, I had never seen him play, but had heard a few things about him, and knew he had some great size about him.

But now that he's played a dozen or so games, and being fiarly impressive, his trade value would've gone up a fair bit, and we would have to give up more than what i would've originally planned for 4 months ago, but he is still one guy I think our club may just look at, if we do decide to take part in the trading period this season.

So just a couple of questions, how is he rated down at Catland, and has he committed his future to the club or is he still uncertain where he's future lies??

And if he were up for trade, what would you guys be looking fo?

The test will be over the next couple of weeks.

Collingwood had a depleted backline, and Melbourne are just a rabble.

The next few weeks we play West Coast at home, and Brisbane at the GABBA. If McCarthy manages to kick a couple in both games, well I'll be impressed, I'm sitting tight for now though.

I think he is out of contract at seasons end, however that will change within the next week or so, i should think.

3 weeks ago he was a prime candidate for delisting, so thus wouldn't have been offered a contract renewal.

His father Shane, played for us, so Matty is a lifelong Geelong supporter.

Thompson rates him very highly, not sure about the rest of the club.

McCarthy would only be considered for trade if Kingsley and Mooney are kept, otherwise he'd be untouchable.

Given his size, and ability to take a contested mark, i'd want a 2nd round pick, or some sort of deal involving David Haynes.

If McCarthy can work on his kicking, there's no reason why he can't become a regular in the senior team. He has shown that he can take a contested mark and he leads like a proper forward should, he just needs to be able to finish off the good work.

Does anyone else think he gets a bit nervous when he has a set shot on goal?? It just appears that he does, not sure why that would be when he's kicked plenty of goals in the VFL.

He has a very irregular routine when kicking in, I have noticed. I think he needs to concentrate on a set routine, regardless whether he's kicking from 15 metres out, or 50 metres +.

thats the problem now. He's played a few games and shown a bit of potential.

At the start of the year, as I mentioned, I had him as a possible (but unlikely) bolter for a trade, which we could for secure for a fourth round pick, or some piece of **** draft pick like that......but now it's not possible...

If it involved Haynes, it would involve some form of sweetener pick from the Cats because Hayne's is on the verge of 50 games (I think he's on about 40-45 now) whilst McCarthey is still yet to play in 5 games (I think....)

Well if Tredrea can work on his kicking and become a decent kick for goal, there's no reason why McCarthy can do the same.

Yeah, no doubt we'd have to throw something in.

BTW McCarthy has played 10 games now.

It has to be. As I have said before, any decent coach would have been working overtime with him to improve his kicking, from the first time he set foot in Skilled Stadium. I severely doubt this has happened under Thompson.

I tend to agree with Catman, although I wouldn't just single out Mark Thompson as the main reason. Surely some responsibility has to fall back to his assistant coaches... the ones employed to help out in specialist areas like skills, defence, forward, etc etc.

The thing I would be interested in is whether or not we get someone down to help out with the goalkicking, like a Brian Taylor or Jason Dunstall.

Oh yeah, he also took a pretty good hanger too.

The bump was a pretty special effort, I must say.

Thought he'd pinched the car for a split second, came crashing back to reality with him pretty quickly tho

The bump was good,but the hanball was better.He almost gave it off to Chappy in front of him,but saw Ablett run by on his own.

The mark was speeeeeeeeecial.

Bartel also took a good mark and gave off a good hanball as he came down.

That was all he did though. I wouldn't have any problem if he left at the end of the year. He is just going through the motions, something Riccardi did very well today, again. Mooney wasn't much better.

McCarthy is one of two players who I feel put in the effort during each game despite not being the greatest players. Chambers is the other who i like simply because he attacks the ball and tackles other players. (street could learn from him). McCarthy just needs to improve his kicking because he has a natural ability to leap and go for marks. he can only get better next year

That's exactly why we should keep Chambers and trade Street at the end of the season. Chambers tries his guts out all the time when on the ground, and that sort of thing can inspire the other players around him to lift their game.
