Anyone have any idea on when Matt Spencer might make his debut?

He seems to be getting regular votes in the 2's.

He reminds me a bit of Tom Harley

He seems to be going well in the VFL,but reading reports in todays paper it seems he played forward for most of the game yesterday.

Leave him in defence.

His main problem seems to be turns wider than the Queen Mary, but otherwise he's okay.

He is a defender,Lonergan is not.
Lonergan is a forward,Spencer is not.

I'm still not sold on him.

Not against him getting a chance, but if his lack of agility is shown up at VFL level i hate to think what the boys in the real stuff will do to him.

Hate to criticise a kid this early, especially since I've been limited to seeing him, but his mobility concerns me.

As a defender, he's best using his considerable bulk to his advantage, but my worry is too many a forward and coach (especially in the AFL) will figure this out and play on the lead - leaving Spencer in their wake.

Spencer looks like he could hold his ground one on one, especially against the hulking forwards of the game (can't comment on the bodywork myself) but there seem to be a growing lack of these one-dimensional sorts of players.

I'd love to be proved wrong by someone who's seen alot more of Matt (Seb perhaps?), but from what I've seen thus far, Matt needs to add a few more strings to his bow.

Went to the game last weekend and he spent the whole in the forward line. Presented well, took 4-5 strong marks and kicked a couple of goals.

Once he is running in a straight line he moves alright but as pointed out he does have a big turning circle. His kicking technique ain't the best either.

Hed almost be a horses for courses chap, when the opposition had a really big forward hes be strong enough to hold his own in a one on one contest.
Kicks like Primus, but you cant question his effort or courage. I personally think he could make a handy CHB.

imo he should have been in the team on saturday.. why they replaced a key defender for a half foward flanker i'll never know... we deserved to lose just for the sheer stupidity of that decision

LIVERPOOL: CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE 04/05!!!!!!

As other have said the man runs heavy. Not mobile enough for back.
As others have said hes not a natural forward , not really got enough trick for forward.
Whens he going to make his debut , maybe never.
His only chance is mark and kick forward but Im not sure he has the talent to get enough ball in this position. Im not sure if you have to be a fantastic kick to get a game in forwardline as KK has proven , but he can create possesions for himself. He would be a cross between Stephen O Rielly and Mark Jackson both of these guys would struggle with todays game.
As with every kid on our list,I want them all to be champions , I just dont see it in him.Maybe its better to give him a game,Id hate to see him delisted with having one but I just dont see who's spot he is going to take

I have to admit, i haven't seen much of Matty Spencer this year.

Like Mark Blake, i thought he did some nice things early in the pre-season. Took some good grabs, kept his opponent to just a few goals and genuinely looked like a decent defender.

There was just one problem - mobility. A horribly big turning circle. Though i think he is quite quick for a man his build.

Jury is very much out, should debut sometime this year, otherwise questions might start to be asked of him.

I think it's important to remember, he's a big guy and he's had to move across the nullabor, and that always takes time.

Spencer was drafted as a forward and played with the knowledge of someone who knows how to play the position - always hits the ball at speed. He's fairly awkward but he could be a handy option for Playfair

Spencer was actually able to play fwd. or back when he captained W.A. in the Nat. Champs. but was generally played as a backman who was versatile enough to go fwd. He alternated a bit between the key posts with Kepler Bradley.

He is one big unit, strong in the air but as pointed out lacks mobility. He also seems to take an eternity to get the ball to boot. I like his approach to the game and he is improving but like H and Lonner's did need's time. Jury's out with me. Should be given at least another year on the list.

Good point from Turbocat when he said he run's heavy. Appears to be on a bog track at Flemington when in fact the track is dry.

im gunna walk down to willi on sunday to have a look, i'll try and remember to post a report afterwards for you guys

How's his reading of the play? I was thinking perhaps he could be a CHB in the Jakovich mould, stand and grab, rather than following his man around the ground and trying for the spoil. With the current rules of not being able to touch the forward, I think the traditional zoning CHB may work as it would work more on plugging gaps rather than running up the field and chasing all day.

The query over here in WA was his pace and agility. Surely being a forward hides these flaws more effectively than a backman. A backman with those traits can be badly exposed on the lead whereas a forward runs in a straight line and uses his leading and marking skills which can hide a lack of pace.

Not too critical of the lad are we?

He is a well built tall not a bloody elusive forward pocket!
Next thing you'll be telling us that your rovers are too short and the full back doesn't kick enough goals!

I hardly think that he is a Matthew Scarlett replacement - but the boys got his own merits, no?
