Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Bad back followed by bad hamstring ... back related hamstring? Hm

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

With Melbourne, West Coast and Essendon over the next month I expect there's a bit of 'player management' going on.

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Probably wouldn't have made the trip to Perth next week anyway, give him a another rest, put your feet up and relax Scarlo

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

We have a pretty easy month ahead. It's not a very good sign for the long term though. He's been very durable up until recently. Age might start to catch up quicker than any of us thought.

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Definately making sure he completely gets over it. He'll be back for the Saints.

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Ok, if that's the deal, then who comes in to defend in place of.

A key position defender, or a re-shuffle?

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

it is how it happens though - as soon as the warranty expires, springs start popping out all over the place

Might be a chance for Gillies to get a run.... Always a bit wary when we haven't got Scarlett as general of the backline - we did loose twice against teams we probably should have beat this season!

But, we do need to learn life without him, and with Lonergan and Taylor performing well it is an excellent chance for them to stand up.

Would be nice to see either Gillies, Laidler or maybe even Drum get a crack at it though!

Hogan got the gig

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Drum is first game back from the eye surgery this week (I think) so he needs some time. From all reports Gillies had his best game this year last week, and Laidler has been good. I would be happy to see any of them get games later in the year as we need to prioritise having Scarlo for when it really matters (i.e. the finals). I don't think we need the extra tall this week though, with Melbourne having only one ruckman and a zippy forward line.

I said at the start of this year that I thought this would probably be Scarlo's last year, and unfortunately the injuries tell me I might be right. Anyway, that's a conversation for October. I just hope he's right in a few weeks time.

Re: Scarlett out for a month!

Na, Scarlo has at least 2 possibly 4 years left in him. Has been very durable, and lets face it, FB is the position where you can flourish even later in your career.

He will be managed cautiously as their is no need for him back just yet. The same can be said of Ottens, Corey and Rooke....they are all being very carefully managed.

I know we never rely on one player, but it's still a massive loss. The backline never looks as clean without him setting the example.

We're 5-0 with him in the side this season, and 2-2 without him. Says it all really.

We're 54-6 with Travis Varcoe in the team - he missed the games that Scarlett missed - so we're better off with him in the side than #30 :D

It's been said Scarlett had to be talked into playing this season. Body gone? Still our MOST important player, just ahead of Mooney, IMO. Could not win a flag without Scarlett. As key for us as Riewoldt for Saints?

Might be a good time to give Gillies a go over the next few weeks if he is over his injury, which I am assuming is the case. This kid is potentially a future FB, so let's give him some games.

Probably not against the Dees' but definitely could be a matchup for Le Cras next week.... With Kennedy, Lynch and Le Cras, that would be my tip.

Mackie can slot into full back as well, but obviously he is more preferable on the flanks.

By who?

He's only 30, still seems to have the passion and is contracted until the end of 2011.
I'd be absolutely shocked if there was any substance to that claim.

I don't think you have to worry about Scarlett, clearly loves playing and like Mooney will probably be around as long as the team still wants him...which is going to be for quite some time yet!
