How's he travelling with physical and football development guys? Possible centre half back? How's his VFL form and look forward to a duel with Kepler if it comes about.

I personally haven't seen alot of Matty but by all reports he seems to be progressing well. Played some good games for the VFL team but I wouldn't expect him to be in the senior team anytime soon, even though his big frame suggests otherwise.

only seen him once, looks ok

Matthew Spencer was actually named on the bench for last week’s game, and I’m unsure if he actually started there as I missed the start. I did notice he was rotated off the bench regularly, this may be due to the fact he is a big fellow and the conditions did not suit him at all.

In the games I have seen of him he has shown some promising signs. If I remember correctly, he is quick for his size which is good, and he also has clean skills. Big bloke for someone young, so give him a little more time to get used to the bigger game and this bloke could end up being a steal for a pick in the 40’s.

He started on the ground.Don't take any notice of the named bench in the VFL last week.He was only named there because the 4 senior players on the bench were named in the VFL squad of about 29.

I saw him for the first time today against Frankston and was really impressed. Big strong takes some good marks and is very courageous..possibly the next Jeff Smith :P

Matthew will be a good addition to the side in the next few seasons, he's just settling in from Western Australia, so we should all give him some time :)

Nana

You say he's big and strong but were the marks contested. Can he get of the ground without being in a plane? Can he kick over a jam tin?Can he hit the side of a barn?Is he one sided? Is he quicker than cold honey? Will he have the cool of a Mooney or the temper of Ben Graham. Seriously do you see him at all getting a game this year?If we start a losing streak might it be a good time to give him 4 or 5 or is it out of the question? If this guy is what I hope , he might be a Big Benny replacement in a couple!

.....riiight,

well yes the marks were contested, and blokes were bouncing off him, he is a big lad. For a guy that big he is fairly agile and gets around the ground well. i saw him kicking at training one night with Kenny Hinkley teaching him, its definetly not a strength of his game, but today when he needed to he was able to pick out a player up field. I can see him getting a game this year if he continues to play like he did today and improve. as for replacing Graham, i think he was recruited as a CHB and that will probably stay the same for a fair while. I wouldnt expect to see him playing up forward. If you're looking to the ressies for a Graham replacement, i am a big fan of Tom Lonergan ad think when he bulks up, will be a great player. looked good today as well as spencer

How does he compare to a guy we had under Blight "Stephen O'Rielly"? .Big WA bloke who came and then went home.I think he going actually got us the selection that we used to get King.
He a reasonable size, solid but lacked that something special to be anything more than a back.
When I say to replace BG I wasnt thinking positional rather just body type in the 22 mix.I really think BG is a backman playing up forward because we dont have another option and hes probably not as quick as he once was.Saw Lonergan the other week on TV , nice kick, reasonable 1on1 but can he jump? Bulking up will give him strength but I dont see him becoming a Cam Mooney. His body would be similar to LLoyd so he must have a bit spring if his going to be any good but at this time he and Playfair are the two I feel are the best chances on our list as Key forwards

Cam Mooneys not a CHF, so i wouldnt expect Lonergan to become a Cam Mooney, and if Grahams playing out of position why do you see Spencer being the next BG?!?!?, like i said before Spencer is not a CHF he is a CHB. Bigger than O'Rielly and takes more marks.

Lonergan didnt see him get off the ground heaps, but hes tall and good mark. Dont think itll be a huge issue at all.

I think we can agree that in about 2 years or so Benny will be either gone or coming to an end , a bit like Ricco now.He might still be playing but at that point we should have other tall personel in the side and they will be the ones that should be carring the burden of performance. If spencer is a natural tall back great! Probably a bit like Benny for his first 100 games at the club. His last 100 has seen him alternate between forward and back or spent more time on the forward line. I feel this due to our needs and probably now hes starting to get to a point where his speed might be an issue if he did play there. If D.Fletcher was at Geelong the same would have been asked of him but at Ess. they dont have the need.Nietz is probably a reasonable comparrison and now will play the rest of his footy at FF.If big Spencer does come into our backline will he fit with Harley,Scarlo and Mooney?.I think one of those guys will be pushed else where if we dont get a natural tall forward from somewhere, and Id have to say the most likely would be Mooney.
Whether thats replacing BG or not, in effect he will be in as a tall as Benny as a tall starts to go out

If Lonie cant jump then he better have a strong body or he will just be another of the many leading forwards at Catland. That KK problem not enough tricks.

Why didnt you just ask that instead of blabbing on for ages?,
Its not a question of who he will replace its a question of depth and being able to adapt to teams we play. Some teams you only need 2 KPP's some you need more. Injuries occur and its almost impossible to get ur best 22 on the field every week. also, mooneys not yer a proven consistent backman, his form in the ruck has been great this year, but he hasnt really been tested against a good player down back yet, He got towled up by Whitnall remember.

as for Lonergan well.....you obviously havent seen him play yet, and i never said he couldnt jump....i said i didnt see him take any big marks. was a fairly wet old day on saturday

Nana , all have right to post , if you dont like what is written or you think it BLABS on and on, then dont respond.
I first asked for a description of his abilities in a light hearted way as I thought you were being after your posting :
I saw him for the first time today against Frankston and was really impressed. Big strong takes some good marks and is very courageous..possibly the next Jeff Smith
unless you were being serious about smith then I dont know what the hell you meant
you responded to my post, by picking up that the reference that I made to replacing BG was positional , I replied trying to correct your assumption.
You also mentioned Lonergan and we debated his attributes

Debate and opinion, isn’t that what these boards are all about. To disagree is your absolute right but don’t disparage others for expressing theirs.

I totally agree that everyone is entitled to there opinion, thats what makes these boards so great. if everyone had the same opinion it would make them boring.

Its not ur opinion i have a problem with, its the longwindedness of you posts. They are sometimes a little hard to understand as you bring up so many points. e.g when you used all the metaphoric examples when asking questions about spencer. and when asking sammy d about the KPP's. i think you have some good points, just try and express them a little more simply..

and yes the Jeff Smith comment was sarcastic. Spencer is a courageous player smith is soft. I think VFL are playing curtain raiser on sunday so maybe go along and have a look at Spencer and Lonergan and see what you think, personally i'm looking forward to them playing seniors over the latter part of the season.

Fair enough. Style like opinion is individual. One person's sarcasm is another person's metaphor. Good suggestion I will try to get down to see the VFL if possible. I used to enjoy looking at the up and comers but don’t get to see them too much any more, even when they play they seem to finish earlier than they used to.

Spencer reminds me of Leigh Colbert (the Leigh of today).

Very courageous, attacks the ball ferociously, good leadership, reads the play well, but not great overhead, no leap and a bit slow.

If he can improve his marking, and balance, he will make it.

BTW I noticed a couple of comments on Spencer's kicking.

Don't let his ungainly style influence you, he actually gets good results with his kicking.

Hmm ok, i was just watching him getting rpactice one night with ken hinkley and he seemed to be spraying them. but hopefully he is a good kick. very much like colbert of now, except hes commited to geelong ;)

I did go early to see the VFL but not early enough apparently, to be finished by 1.00 is a joke.Anyway saw most of the quarter, Bartel and Byrnes were the standouts to me. Spencer was up the city end and I being in the Hickey left me trying pick up what I could from a fair distance.Too hard to tell really , he's a big unit alright , he was playing Full Back and looked like he was losing his opponent in the one on ones, no disgrace in this as its an under rated skill , (Its just guys like Scarlett makes it look easy). It will be interesting to watch his development.
