Has a had a great start to the season, and has been great in this celebration game.

Should have a few brownlow votes all ready and shows some of the other small forwards in the comp how to play.

Love the way you guys play, all the best for the rest of the season (especially Stokes)

Hi & thanks for that.
Without trying to sound like the mutual appreciation society if the Cats don't win it this year I hope that it is your Bulldogs. I love the way they play and feel like they are getting close. Good Luck and spot on with your comments on Mathew Stokes.

Stoka is a gun. He has the ability to do the uncanny but so often opts for the team thing. You don't see him miss too many and considering most of his shots are from in play 40+ meters out, that's pretty impressive. Probably the best overhead mark in the side and at 177cm that;s a mighty effort.

Was touted as a very early pick a few years back but just expected it to happen and as a result he got passed up a number of times and has had to work his backside off to get a gig. You'd struggle to find a better story than the little fela but I'd say the best is yet to come.

Stokes- Future Captain?

This will sound a bit left of field, especially with the likes of Hawkins and Selwood waiting in the wings for leadership, but is Stokes a possible captain for our great club?

He bleeds blue and white. He has changed his ways, works extremely hard and is especially popular amongst not only the fans, but just as importantly, the team and coach.
Is this guy a chance to be a leader of the club one day?
Also, while i'm at it, he'll play on the wing/midfield soon!

no, given age relative to ablett and bartel, and then selwood

close topic

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Part of the leadership group maybe, but stokes doesn't seem to have those leadership qualities that someone like Harley possesses.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

I would like that. The ultimate rags to riches story. But can't see it happening myself :(

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

He is awesome. I agree he bleeds blue and white but not sure if he actually posses true leadership qualities. I hardly ever see him direct team mates, he has a job and does it exceptionally well.

Selwood should captain the club at some stage. I think Garry Ablett will captain next followed by Selwood in about five years.

Agreed CF21. Gaz is surely the next captain, is being pumped up with it now with a load of media work and responsibility to lead the team on the park with his performance.

Selwood will most likely stay at the club for a long time, therefore with his current on field leadership, would make a super captain.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Super player but will never be captain even without selwood, bartel, ablett, chapman etc. He doesn't have the leadership qualities as the above but he'll probably make a few cameo fill in roles.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Nice player always improving but we have better options in Ablett, Ling, Corey, Bartel and J Selwood.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Havnt seen him show any real leadership skills on or off the field, apart from telling Hawkins to pass it off when he snapped that goal, and now Hawkins doesnt want to have a shot...

A good player doesnt make a good captain. He has to have the attributes of it, and I have not seen them as of yet.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

would be awesome to see lingy as a skipper of the club one day...never going to happen though. he would be the most passionate of the players IMO.

however Harls is an awesome skip, and it will naturally be passed to gaz and onto selwood barring any unforseen circumstances...

stokes for leadership group, simply through leading by example

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Stokes- future captain i think not. Wouldn't be in the top 7-8 selections for captain. WOuld be very surprised if he ever was in our leadership group.

good player but seems shy on and off the field which doesnt make a leader.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

mate after starting that dribble of a thread about Hawkins playing like Fev and Buddy being cr@p, I wouldn't be so quick to shoot down other posters.
nuff nuff please explain
"but he one of many that put he's price up"
otherwise i didn't call the racv

before you have a go, read what i was having a go at
and by the way my thread has twice the posts that this one, so i suppose it is total crap

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

Angling away from the point of Stokesy here, but the more I think of it, I would have little problem with the club bypassing the apparent 'next-tier' of leaders (Ling, Chappy, Bartel, Ablett) and handing over the (C) reins to Selwood when Harley is done.

I think it's been pretty clear that age has never been an issue when assessing Selwood in his career to date. Anything but.

Re: Stokes- Future Captain?

i'm not sure why ablett is considered the heir apparent. he's our best player to be sure, but I consider Chapman to be a far better leader.

Having said that, I'd rather just give the captaincy straight to Selwood, when Harley steps down next year.
