How exactly are we in better shape than we were in the Ashes? Pace attack I'll give you but our batting is miles behind where it was in the Ashes and we are no closer to finding a spinner.

The batting isn't that much different. In that series it was Hussey + whoever's turn it was to stick around with him. It's Clarke doing a Hussey now. I guess we could do with the tail adding a few runs as they had to in the Ashes but that's about all.

You're assuming they were played on the same deck. The way the Indian commentators were talking last Test, I got the impression it was pretty unusual.

Our batting has problems but it's not really panic stations. We're going to lose this series mostly because we can't bowl India out for a respectable total.

You said on a pitch like Chennai, we can only go with what history shows and history shows what I pointed out. Who is to say the Indian batsmen wouldn't have cruised past 300 in their 4th innings if given the chance to?

Why is it that our bowling is always under the microscope? The same happened after the Ashes, there was barely any talk or changes in the batting, it was the bowlers that copped it all. They both should have shared equal blame just like they should here.

When I say a pitch like Chennai, I'm obviously talking about the pitch we actually played on.

I don't think the total we posted was uncompetitive at all. Take out Dhoni's freak 224, we have a 60-run first innings lead and India's chasing 300 on the fifth day. Not necessarily saying Dhoni's innings is the fault of the bowling attack, just saying I think that our total was a lot more competitive than people give it credit for.

Our batting could be better for sure - first innings here is a prime example. But the bottom line is that our bowlers don't really look like taking 20 wickets in 5 days. Doesn't matter how well you bat if you can't get the opposition out.

Yep that looks very on par. Check out that brilliant bowling.

You specifically said that our batting now was miles behind where we were in the Ashes. Don't try and move the goalposts.

Those are not the stats of a batting line-up miles behind the Ashes 2010-11 team.

Why are you bringing up series with Mike Hussey in it? How is he going to fix our current sides problems? I was talking specially about this test match where we have selected Doherty and Maxwell as our spinners and our batting lineup contains 2 batsmen with an average over 40. Are you seriously telling me you would take this batting lineup over the Ashes one we had?

Do you still think that our batting line-up right now is "miles behind" our Ashes line-up? Look at all the performances of current players (kind of obvious if you're not being deliberately obtuse).

Watson vs Cowan (Watson easily)
Hughes vs Warner (Warner just)
Ponting vs Hughes (Ponting easily)
Clarke vs Watson (Clarke easily)
Hussey vs Clarke (Equal)
Smith vs Wade (Wade)
Haddin vs Henriques (Haddin)

Yes I do.

Let's not kid ourselves, our batting at moment has 1 guy with his spot secure, another who can consider himself safe but England will be the true test and the rest are under the chop.

Thanks for confirming that you are being obtuse.

Watson, Hughes and Clarke are in both teams. Wade vs Haddin along with Smith vs Henriques should be the comparisons considering they are filling the same role.

It's basically Warner and Cowan vs Ponting and Hussey. Hussey would've been very useful, Ponting would've done absolutely nothing.

That is in no way an indication of being miles behind.

From a tour of India (that isn't even halfway done)? Yeah, okay.

At the risk of sounding overly biased/bitter, one session cost us the game in Chennai. We were neck and neck with India until we let Dhoni out of our grasp. 241 on that particular pitch was an acceptable score. A 200+ final innings chase would have been quite tough even for apt players of spin like the Indians.

This current test has been a disaster, yes, but it's not over yet.
