Mattner 200 Games

Don't really miss him. Maybe my opinion of him is clouded by his head-down-running-into-trouble-without-looking style that he had with the Crows.

He still does this at the Swans, except the SCG is so freakin small that when he puts his head down and runs from half back he gets an inside 50 :p

We didn't have to waste it on Symes.

The net result of the trade isn't disappointing, more the context. Symes is a great player in the wrong era, goes on to become a list clogger/depth player. Mattner goes on to play 200 games, despite heading towards list clogger/depth player status on our list.

Loved Mattner when he and Burton patrolled the wings prior to his downturn in performance.

Both Mattner and Symes would do well in Sando's structures, though i wouldn't let Symes near the back line due to foot skills. Wing or defensive HFF type and he could easily do well if our depth is sorely tested. Looking a better player than Tambling at present.

Came in at a time for us when we were lacking pace & rebound off half back. Played the rebounding role adequately for a couple of years, though still with a few turnovers that you guys would've been used to.

Since Shaw came into the site, then with Kennelly's return, the emergence of Jetta & Rohan, and McVeigh's move to the HB line, Mattner transformed himself into one of the best defensive players in the comp, I believe.

Severely underrated. He'd have to have close to the best closing ability in the league. The number of last-minute tackles, spoils and smothers the guy produces is amazing.

Still liable to produce the odd mystifying kick out of defence, but he never drops his head and is always ready to meet the ball as it's returned.

I reckon he would've provided some valuable defensiveness hardness for you over the past couple of years, but definitely would be surplus to your requirements now.

Yeah, I remember him as a good defensive player, but very poor disposal (foot and brain issues).

I was surprised to see him get to 200 games, and would probably consider him one of the lesser quality players to get to that level. Not the worst 200 gamer ever, but would feature in the discussion.

Could've been worse, Port got Marlon Motlop out of the deal.

The only Crow I've hugged.

Good stuff Marty!Cognrats on 200.

I know he loves it in Sydney.

As much as I disagreed with it at the time, leaving the Crows was the best thing for his career. I seriously doubt he would have made 200 had he stayed. The way he was being played in 07 was detrimental to his footy - he was turned from a solid player with a huge kick and fearsome tackling into a complete and utter liability. Craig had a wonderful influence on a lot of our player's careers, but it was the complete opposite with Mattner. He had him second guessing his every move and his natural game was ruined. I'm glad that he turned himself around at Sydney and I congratulate him on a fine career. Only a small percentage of players make 200 games, and Mattner can hold his head high. Good on ya Marty.

Mattner was hurt by our game plan that involved regular switches. He wanted to simply get the ball and break off on a run, which didn't fit in with how we were playing, so we tried to put him in a different role which just never worked.

Really trading him is a good example of what should happen - if you have a commodity but for whatever reason he just doesn't work in your system, you should be able to get more value from the trade than you would from keeping him in your system. Unfortunately Symes didn't work out brilliantly but the theory was right.

Speaking of his ability to run and carry, favourite Mattner moment was actually in a Sturt grandfinal from memory. A number of running bounces along the member's wing and then kicks a long goal from a tight angle in the 'Fevola' pocket at AAMI.

Marty Mattner was awesome in that Grand Final and a huge contributor to that upset win that Sturt had in that match. His speed, tackling and booming left foot helped us get very much over the line. I remember being very excited at his potential for the Crows. It made that rookie draft that netted him as well as Bock and Rutten very significant.

Having seen plenty of him during Swans games over here, he still runs into trouble with his head down and kicks to the opposition a lot, but gives them a lot off HB and is suited to the SCG. Just didn't adapt to the game style at the AFC.
