I have never really thought about it, but it seems like everyone has mattner as a certain selection for round 1. I tend to agree.

But with tadgh back, and malcho (hopefully) back to near his best - surely some pressure will fall back onto mattner for how much he really offers.

Yes, he is an excellent tackler and a long kick ... but i dont really see him as much else.

Personally, i would much rather see smith in the team in the backline, and players like rohan or hanners in the midfield

or maybe, it has been 6 months without any footy and i have forgotten how good he is.

Mattner, Shaw, Mal, Kennelly. All locks, rotated thru, 3 on, 1 benched and run like hell, all game..every game. A rested runner runs best.

Against St Kilda get ready for that super 4.

St Kilda are well known for trying to chop off attacks from their half forward line. This running quartet is going to be our weapon. Kennelly and Shaw will be the stand outs but Mattner is going to have a role too with some physical shepherding work to open a passage for them to run through or scrag a play or two to stop a rebound effort from them when we don't get through too.

I think we'll see Mattner play mostly in the midfield this year. He spent a lot of the end part of last season there and I thought he was pretty effective.

We have some seriously strong bodies to rotate through the middle this year - kamikaze Bolton, Mattner, O'Keefe and Kennedy, who is a huge unit and isn't scared to crash his way through. Add in Jack and McGlynn who are short but still relatively strong, maybe Bulldog Moore at times, and of course Kirk, who looks slight but doesn't play like it, and any young, immature midfield groups are going to get physically smashed.

I agree. We had some problems getting through their defence in the NAB cup. We need a lot of run and carry to break their lines- and we have it !

Mattner on the wing is a win as far as i'm concerned.

His main weapon is clearing the field with his 55metre kicking on the run. Having Bradshaw and White deep forward will be a massive headache for defenders if we get it down there quick enough. Mattner will be the man for this role.

Also keeps him away from the kick-ins.

Sigh.

He is clearly going to play. I don't think there are many teams in the league that would turn down the foursome of Kennelly, Malceski, Mattner and Shaw as options to rotate through half back, the wing and midfield.

Please don't

Cool story bro! :thumbsu:

What are your thoughts on Martin Mattner?
Where will he play? Midfield or in defence?
How well do you think he'll play?
Are you a fan of Mattner?
Do you think it's unfair that he has some knockers, despite playing every game for the club since he has joined us from the Crows?

Love to hear your thoughts brother! :thumbsu:

I've been one of his biggest detractors. Largely due to others on here overrating his performances and overlooking some of the terrible mistakes he makes, but even I see him as best 22 material. Probably not as entrenched in the 22 as others would see him but he has value.

I think he's best suited to stints in the midfield and on the wing. His tackling and defensive pressure is excellent and with our new look forward line I think his long direct kicking is also an asset.

I'm sticking my neck out here, but I'm not 100% sure on Shaw. I think Mattner, Kennelly and Mal are 100% in the team. LRT, Reg & C. Bolton for the key positions. Teddy, Shaw, Nick Smith etc are fighting it out for a spot.

Shaw is in the team, 3rd in the B and F last year and unless he is woefully unfit he will be in the team come round 1. His somewhat interrupted preseason can be matched by his outstanding form last year and how important he became for us.

Maybe a thread "does R Shaw deserve to be in the 22" is on the cards.

I think he's safe, as is Mattner.

And LRT for that matter.

While I think all these should player X be in the best 22 is starting to fray some nerves, it does illustrate the depth we have this season compared to last year (injuries played a biff part mind you). When we stray over to the runner up in the b&f having his position questioned I think that's stretching things a tad

I reckon mattner is a bit overrated on here - if he wasn't on the team, I seriously doubt we'd miss him much at all. Fringe 22 IMO but well all know he'll be in there so no use fighting it I guess...

I agree with this.
