Goldsack is different from Maxwell but they can both play loose man..
I agree that O'Loughlin is not the player he once was but I've still never seen Maxwell beat anyone of even his quality. That said, I've rarely seen him beat anyone at all. He plays on the duds every week (4th, 5th best forwards if anyone at all - often plays loose man which is useless as he can't kick) and most weeks is lucky to break even.

Maxwell isn't faking the toughness I concede that he is genuinely tough but he is also useless as a FOOTBALL PLAYER. You have to be tough and good not just tough. Goldsack hasn't done much to warrant selection but at least he has shown signs in his short career, something that Maxwell has never done and at least we don't have to have a heart attack every time he gets the ball in his hands.

If Maxi was ever going to be AFL standard he would be by now and will not improve further. As long as he is in the team he is holding someone back who has the potential to be AFL standard, i.e. Goldsack or even Anthony who from what I have seen can actually defend in his own right, unlike Maxwell..

I don't hate Maxwell but I'm not going to be fooled by one performance where HE STILL HAD GOALS KICKED ON HIM by duds and it was his best performance of the year. If his best performance is still only an average to good performance in AFL wide terms then he's not good enough. He doesn't deserve the protection people are giving him and we should be judging him by what he does on the field, not by what he exemplifies or what Buckley thinks his number should be.

The simple way to argue this is by seeing who he's played on that's notable in his career. He hasn't played on anyone of note since 2006! Then looking at who he's played on that's not necessarily a star (most weeks) and when he gets beaten most weeks, you have your answer.

Absolutely destroyed ROK in the Sydney final (i.e. Sydney's best forward) and beat Nathan Ablett so bad in the prelim the kid had to retire.

But finals don't count, I guess.

You're not seriously nominating Nathan Ablett as anything other that a witness in protection, hidden in the football industry. Absolute hack, even Zac Dawson could teach that guy a lesson..Also, his performance in that prelim was just about the weakest, most gutless display I've ever seen in an AFL match --> Max was playing on a plant.

I'll cop the ROK suggestion, he did well on him but to pull that out as an example in an 82 game career? What else has he done? Your next suggestion was Nathan Ablett. He would have been better off being beaten by O'Keefe, it wouldn't have shown that he couldn't beat a good player on any day other than that one..All it does is emphasise the other 81 games full of playing on noones, playing loose man (with bad kicking skills) and occasionally being beaten by someones.

The Ablett reference was clearly in jest - unless you thought I was serious about Nickwell forcing him into retirement.

I pulled out the ROK game because:
a) You said he hadn't played on anyone of note since 2006
b) You said he always takes the 4th or 5th best player.

If you want to go back through his 82 game career and work out who he's beaten and who he hasn't, that's up to you. My memory isn't that good.

I do know we are 2 wins 5 losses when Maxwell doesn't play since he made his debut (and iirc the losses include some pretty crappy teams).

I thought Maxwell looked like a fairly good rebounding player early on...but he seems more like a Jason Cloke spoil and toiler these days....

That's a fair enough call I suppose and I agree that at one stage Maxwell in what he brings to the table was beneficial to the team.

The fact is though is that the team has a 'hardness' to it regardless of Maxi's presence and his influence in this regard is therefore felt less when more of our team does it these days. The team has improved IN PLAYING TERMS also tho and I don't think he has. Either the team, or the game has moved past him (I think he's just bereft of talent but that can be debated) and his performances this year do not warrant a place in the team. Maxi at his best was probably in our best 18/19 (which doesn't say much for his ability, the list was only developing in any case) but right now I don't think he's in the best 22. I think he's only being picked because MM loves his attitude and because the media has inflated his reputation to a level even he would laugh at. Don't think he's good enough.

I'll say it again - energy/aggression/tackling is a talent. He's the most talented player in this aspect on our list. Medhurst is very close, but tends to give away too many free-kicks some games (and yes, Medhurst is obviously the far better offensive player). But they're at different parts of the ground, so they don't get in each other's way.

On a side note, I actually thought we really missed Pendlebury from a defensive stand-point this week. He's easily our best at anticipating opposition attacks and cutting them off in the middle. The Demons were just waltzing through Didak and co. at times.

True, has shown to have a lot more defensive ability than a lot of BF people gave him credit for. He lays a lot of tackles as well. Also, with Swan down, we missed him in spotting up forwards.

I agree that energy/agressiveness/tackling is a 'talent' as such, I just don't see how it can be adequate that it's your only talent.

Where is the talent of backing yourself!
Read the bounce of the ball!
Be aggressive, but don,t take your teamate out of the equation. ie: your teamates will make you look good Maxy.

Maxwell needs to bring something else to the table because aggression is only going to get him so far.
His aggression and 1% is the only area of the game where he can expect a pass mark based on any criteria.

Moving forward,I think that Goldsack can and will play a similiar role at a higher level.
For Collingwood to move beyond being there abouts to being a legitimate contender I think this move is imperative. It wont necessarily happen overnight but it will happen.

Also, I would like to table a motion that forces the Collingwood FC to buy the rights of every game we have played this year.
They are to then take the footage and digitally remove the #5 of Maxwell's back every time it is seen.
Buck's offered it to him based on some intangibles he brings to a game of football. Decision making was not one of those.
He should have refused to have the #5 running around in the Magoo's sooner rather than later.

And if I'm wrong, well that would be one of several reasons as to why I will have to wait longer than I had hoped for a premiership.

I have "set down" a bottle of fine whiskey, 15 yo Glenfiddich in fact, and when Big Bucks has a good word for Maxy:eek:, which he will have to eventually by weight of good performances, I will open it and the savor it's contents.

Till then Johnny Walker will have to do....lol

You'll be drinking it with your mashed potato and pumkin through a straw in your wheel chair :D

I'm a Maxwell fan and even called for him to be captain during the offseason. He isn't our most talented player but he knows that and makes up for it with determination and presence. He is one of our best leaders and the way he brings people together is by leading by example with being courageous and fearless.

The reason that we were successful last season and possibly look the goods this year is because the side as a whole play for each other and are physically tough enough to pressure opposition such as the Geelong match. This is also great for finals football when this type of playing really counts.

I believe that one of the reasons that the side is so good at this physical type of pressure football is because Maxwell has lead by example to create that culture. I am loving our current style of football! St Kilda have all the skill but no grit - is that what you would like BigBucks?

What i would like first and foremost, is for people like you to stop making out that Maxwell is a Glen Archer type footballer, i am not even going to mention his limited football ability, what i will mention is the fact that he is NOT aggressive ( and when he tries to be he takes his own teamates with him) he has no physical presence, and he intimidates no one.
Maxwell is a good citizen and a fine clubman. FULL STOP.

I disagree that he is not agressive but I do agree that he lacks physical presence. No offence to the bloke but he's too much of a goose to be physically intimidating. He's always behind the game and lacks awareness, courageous as any player i've ever seen but completely useless body on body - which for an agressive player of his size/attitide should be his bread and butter. He is also one hell of a tackler tho i'll give him that (when he gets one which is less often than people might think)..

Agreed with the full stop part though, like the BLOKE but the BLOKE can't PLAY..
