Maxwell played well for a defender on the weekend. Needs to consistently do it though.

Na, he supports wanking cause he's a w***er![]()
Goldsack is different from Maxwell but they can both play loose man..
I agree that O'Loughlin is not the player he once was but I've still never seen Maxwell beat anyone of even his quality.
Absolutely destroyed ROK in the Sydney final (i.e. Sydney's best forward) and beat Nathan Ablett so bad in the prelim the kid had to retire.
But finals don't count, I guess.

You're not seriously nominating Nathan Ablett as anything other that a witness in protection, hidden in the football industry. Absolute hack, even Zac Dawson could teach that guy a lesson..Also, his performance in that prelim was just about the weakest, most gutless display I've ever seen in an AFL match --> Max was playing on a plant.
I'll cop the ROK suggestion, he did well on him but to pull that out as an example in an 82 game career? What else has he done? Your next suggestion was Nathan Ablett. He would have been better off being beaten by O'Keefe, it wouldn't have shown that he couldn't beat a good player on any day other than that one..All it does is emphasise the other 81 games full of playing on noones, playing loose man (with bad kicking skills) and occasionally being beaten by someones.
I do know we are 2 wins 5 losses when Maxwell doesn't play since he made his debut (and iirc the losses include some pretty crappy teams).
That's a fair enough call I suppose and I agree that at one stage Maxwell in what he brings to the table was beneficial to the team.
The fact is though is that the team has a 'hardness' to it regardless of Maxi's presence and his influence in this regard is therefore felt less when more of our team does it these days. The team has improved IN PLAYING TERMS also tho and I don't think he has. Either the team, or the game has moved past him (I think he's just bereft of talent but that can be debated) and his performances this year do not warrant a place in the team. Maxi at his best was probably in our best 18/19 (which doesn't say much for his ability, the list was only developing in any case) but right now I don't think he's in the best 22. I think he's only being picked because MM loves his attitude and because the media has inflated his reputation to a level even he would laugh at. Don't think he's good enough.
He's easily our best at anticipating opposition attacks and cutting them off in the middle. The Demons were just waltzing through Didak and co. at times.
I'll say it again - energy/aggression/tackling is a talent. He's the most talented player in this aspect on our list. Medhurst is very close, but tends to give away too many free-kicks some games (and yes, Medhurst is obviously the far better offensive player). But they're at different parts of the ground, so they don't get in each other's way.
On a side note, I actually thought we really missed Pendlebury from a defensive stand-point this week. He's easily our best at anticipating opposition attacks and cutting them off in the middle. The Demons were just waltzing through Didak and co. at times.
Where is the talent of backing yourself!
Read the bounce of the ball!
Be aggressive, but don,t take your teamate out of the equation. ie: your teamates will make you look good Maxy.
, which he will have to eventually by weight of good performances, I will open it and the savor it's contents.I have "set down" a bottle of fine whiskey, 15 yo Glenfiddich in fact, and when Big Bucks has a good word for Maxy, which he will have to eventually by weight of good performances, I will open it and the savor it's contents.
Till then Johnny Walker will have to do....lol

I'm a Maxwell fan and even called for him to be captain during the offseason. He isn't our most talented player but he knows that and makes up for it with determination and presence. He is one of our best leaders and the way he brings people together is by leading by example with being courageous and fearless.
The reason that we were successful last season and possibly look the goods this year is because the side as a whole play for each other and are physically tough enough to pressure opposition such as the Geelong match. This is also great for finals football when this type of playing really counts.
I believe that one of the reasons that the side is so good at this physical type of pressure football is because Maxwell has lead by example to create that culture. I am loving our current style of football! St Kilda have all the skill but no grit - is that what you would like BigBucks?

What i would like first and foremost, is for people like you to stop making out that Maxwell is a Glen Archer type footballer, i am not even going to mention his limited football ability, what i will mention is the fact that he is NOT aggressive (and when he tries to be he takes his own teamates with him) he has no physical presence, and he intimidates no one.
Maxwell is a good citizen and a fine clubman. FULL STOP.
