lol...

Maxwell clearly played his best game for the season but Big Bucks does have a point, he was playing against a very inexperienced player and usually matches up on the 4th or 5th best forward, but he still did a good job none the less. A problem I have with Maxwell is when he goes 3rd man up when one of our other players already has it easily covered and leaves an opposition player to pick up the crumbs for an easy goal. He needs to learn to stay down when the time arises.

I'm so pleased that people here are supportive of Maxwell. I think he's an incredible clubman and is someone who gets the best out of himself.

However, he played on most likely the third or fourth best target for a rubbish Melbourne team who were missing Neitz and Robertson (and we had Marty Clarke on Wonaemirri) - and beat him. If people want to congratulate him for DOING A JOB ANY AFL PLAYER SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IN HIS SLEEP then it's fine if they want to settle for mediocrity.

While he might be a good spoiler against the smaller players, his skills still let him down - his disposal by foot and hand are largely still to players under pressure or even worse, down the throat of our opposition. Watch what happens when he gets the ball. The first touch will most likely be to a player in entirely the wrong position, or under the pump, and you could almost count the seconds before the ball ends up with an opposition shot on goal.

He's never been any good in a key position. Recall the last time he played on a key position forward was in 2006 - he played on Mitch Clarke from Brisbane, who took him to the cleaners with four goals before Maxwell was moved off him. Before that, I remember MM tried Maxwell on Pavlich, i think early 2006. Within five minutes of the game starting, Pavlich had kicked two goals and the crowd was screaming "move Maxwell off Pavlich!".

He is of limited ability, the new generation's Jason Cloke if you like. I'd rather see him pushed out by Goldsack or another flexible tall with skills. While people can compare Maxwell with Cox or any VFL plodders, I'd rather compare him to the best in the competition - not just in effective spoils to a third rate Melbourne defender, but the best in the comp overall. We can only get better if we compare our players to the benchmark and then ask: how do we compare? How does Maxwell compare to the best? What would it take for him to get better?

Who kicks better? Who creates more off the halfback? Who is better body on body? Another question: if Clement were still in the team - would Maxwell be? I think not.

Again, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Maxwell, far from it. I just don't think he's that good - and not worthy of being our captain. I would love to see Maxwell improve his skills, improve his ability to deliver to our players up the field, to set up more. I think he lets us down in that respect. It's up to him to work harder and improve that side of his game, but at his age I can't see how it might happen.

Given they played plenty of footy together, I'm going to go ahead and say yes.

In that case, who would be out of the team to accommodate both Clement and Maxwell? Or in other words, who is Maxwell better than?

Wakelin?

N Brown?

Harry?

My answer: NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Thrown in Goldsack and Prestigiacomo when they overcome their respective injuries.

Not a hater but this perfectly sums up Maxi.. He plays on the duds and never does overly well and the one week he does do well (still on a dud) people sing his praises. He's not good enough, good bloke but a very limited footballer.

If he was any good he should be destroying the hacks he plays on and he doesn't but apparently if it's Maxi, if he does an ok job it's regarded as a fantastic job becasue he's a good clubman..Who cares if he's a good clubman, if he can't play he can't play........He can't play!

He needs the axe and we need to stop accepting mediocrity.

I'm in agreeance with Big Bucks ans The Rusler still.

Collingwood should have high standards, i.e always gives 100% and has AFL standard football ability.

Pendlebury is an example of such a player.

Medhurst last year was an example of someone with AFL ability that didn't give 100%

Maxwell is an example of someone who gives 100% but doesn't have the ability.

We should be aiming for 22 players who give their all and have the ability.

Greetings Hackwell lover. What a plodder our no. 5 is these days.
Buckley gave maxwell his jumper maxy did not ask for it. Just ask buckley he will tell you as much.

And your point?
To get Big Bucks to stop having a cry over teh fact maxy wears five now, if buckley gave it to him who are we to complain about it

Whats your point! create a divergence from the fact that Maxwell is a plodder, i couldn,t give a stuff who, why, how he got the number 5.

Your ealier post about him wearing the number 5 says otehrwise

Responding to your Hackwell loving buddy and saying,"what a plodder we have wearing the no.5 these days".
Simply stating a fact, he is a plodder.
I couldn`t care less what number he wears, he could wear no.87 for what its worth.
Tony Shaw gave Jason Wild his no.22 as he admired the way Wild went about his footy, Same as Buckley admired about Hackwell, what was the ending of Jason Wild!

For all the Goldsack fanboys, who has he beaten other than an ageing, out-of-form O'Loughlin? (and even then O'Loughlin kicked a few).

No, Maxwell can't play on key forwards - neither can Goldsack. Neither of them are needed to play on key forwards.

Maxwell is in the team because he's the leader of the backline (along with Wakelin) and has one fantastic talent - his aggression. Other sports have long ago identified that energy guys are crucial to team success, and specifically they've identified that energy/aggression is a talent. I'm sure our coaching staff is equally aware of this. When someone else shows up with comparable aggression/tackling/leadership and better skills, I'll join the chorus.

Go through any of the premiership teams of the last 10 years, and I think you'll find at least 1 player in each who was in the team primarily for his hardness and aggressiveness.

He is not aggressive,he is however a hard chasing/tackling player.
He scares no-one, you make it sound like he is a Glenn Archer/Cam Brown type player.
Maxwell is a try hard who knows he has limited skills and therefore tries to conjure up that he is aggresive.
He is not the leader of our backline.
Malthouse spends half the game trying to hide him against the oppositions least effective forward.

Goldsack>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hackwell.

It was Goldsack's debut season. To beat O'Loughlin in your first season of AFL TWICE is a top effort, no matter how you look at it.

He has far more ability than maxwell it isn't funny. More athletic,I reckon he';ll be stronger after a few seasons. Better skills. He is JUST as hard at it.

IMO Goldsack could extend past the backline anyway. I think he has the capabilities to be our next tagger. Tall, athletic, disciplined, works hard. Am I the only one who sees this?

I am with you on that, Moneybags has more ability in every facet of the game over Maxwell.
Back it in Goldsack will walk back into the side once he gets over his injury, hopefully at the expense of our wannabe Captain.

Maxwell was thrown onto Bates, he kicks 2 goals, Malthouse tries to hide him on Lynden Dunn he kicks a goal.
Tell me who has Maxwell beaten hands down in his whole career.
Imagine what O`Loughlin would do with Maxwell, i don,t want to think about that, absolute nightmare. Bring back Goldsack.
