Thought I would mention 3 players from yesterday who perhaps will not be highlighted as much as some others. These 3 contributed greatly to our win in my opinion. Their tackling and chasing pressure was enormous. The pace of Russell and his desperation to chase should not go without notice. Worth at least 10 possessions. McGrath's agression was inspiring and Betts week in week out is our most passionate defensive player.

Russell and Betts had little impact really.

Are you basing this only on kicks and handballs? Anyone can pick up kicks these days but not too many cause turnovers with desperation, something both Betts and Russell did yesterday. In fact Cartlon lack players with the capacity to run people down and desperatly need players to inspire in these areas. Too many on our list don't pressure the opposition.

Are you serious? Did you even watch the game? Their pressure was enormous and contributed to the result.

Eddie in the first quarter. His determination to chase, harrass and pressure the opposition resulted in the ball being turned over and Fev kicking that fantastic goal.

Jordan Russell in the last quarter. His determination to chase, harrass and pressure the opposition resulted in the ball being turned over and might I add, Melbourne probably would have kicked a goal because they had loose players up the ground at that point in the game.

Both very crucial points in the game and not to mention other 1%'s both players were involved in.

Spot on, a key reason we won was pure defensive pressure.

We won by 7 points, there were at least three clear goals that resulted in pressue from Edward Betts.

Russell played his best game to date, and his pressure was just sensational.

McGrath played a blinder in his terms as well.

All 3 played a role in yesterdays win, Mcgrath especially.
Russell is improving with each game, i just hope he can get some more time on the ground over the last 4 rounds.
Betts's defensive pressure up front is exceptional, he might not get alot of the ball yet but its those 1%'s that give supporters like myself alot of enjoyment, lets hope some of the other players can follow his lead on these.

All 3 were very good.

McGrath, whilst not a star, is a good player. Would be much better as a handy depth player, but at the moment we don't really have others to replace him, so he is in the team, and what he does he usually does well.

Eddie, whilst he does go missing, is there for his pressure. The chasing and running and blocking which he does is excellent. Now we need to build on his consistency and goalkicking, and we have a more than handy player. Love his work.

JR is the best of the 3. Really like him-his pressure was excellent. Have been saying it since day 1, we have a gun on our hands. Will be similar to Simmo in the sense that we need to be patient with him and will only reap the rewards in a few years time. Can really play, and in a few positions. Capable of playing back pocket, midfield and even pushing forward. Once he gains more experience, he will hopefully become similar to Andrew Embley-tall midfielder capable of really pushing forward and kicking goals. Look forward to see his continual development into a top line player in a few years time.

Didn't see the game?

Or are you just a stats man.

Forget his comment, important thing here is that we all saw and acknowledged their great efforts throughout the game... one person saying they had no impact dosnt do much.

Great signs!

McGrath was ferocious in his tackling, Betts & Russell were also fantastic.

I think singing the theme song is far more beneficial than extra draft picks, even if fox footy didn't show us singing the theme song.

Extra pick is in real danger now, have good chance to beat Hawks & Tigers.

Big call on JR Jeremias. Although I must say he does look like he has something. Bit hard to know whats going to be his spot in a couple of year, but to me he looks like he could become pretty potent off a HBF.

I think Jordan Russell just needs some time. He has alot of potential and i think he will be a great servent to the Carlton Football Club. As for McGrath i think his time is nearly up but has done alot of good things. Betts looks like a great propect although very inconsistent but becoming more consistent. He just needs to get to as many contests as possible

Ease up on russell, gee whiz the kid has not even looked like he will be a good player, I am totally bemused that anyone could even suggest that he will be a star. Has he actually picked up more than ten possesions in a game. Looks very much out of his depth, hope I am wrong but I think we have a guy who would have been at best a rookie choice. He may be quick but he is not a football smart athlete. Needless to say pagan will give him every chance.

Go and barrack for your other team Essendon.

I think that's a very narrow way of looking at things. You can't just measure his output of how many touches he gets, you need to look at the bigger picture. The way he moves, decision making, disposal, etc, etc..

There are some valid observations in this post imo. Russel does seem to lack footy smarts at times. However his efforts against Melbourne in the defensive side of his game were a real positive. Even without possessions he showed that he has value to the team.

He has great pace and determination and kick kick a long ball. I feel if he can continue to pressure the opposition that the confidence he gains will improve his skills and decision making. Cartlon can certainly benefit from a tall quick long kicking player who is prepared to chase and tackle. Think that Setanta is a similarly valueable prospect.
