In the side for round 12 against the Swans?

BOG for Casey in their 39 point victory against Geelong.

Worth a go. Sounds like he is desperate to revive his AFL career. I remember a couple of people on this board saying he would struggle as a rookie to get back on an AFL list. The reason was because he does not have many best on ground games, as he is more workmanlike than spectatcular. Well he has racked a few bests this year in the VFL.

Now is the time.:) I'm actually not a fan of his, but does derserve to be selected.

Thoughts?

____, who cares let's get everyone playing. Big Mac, Little Mac Stevo, Allen, hell let's chuck Eljay in and see how he goes with a broken arm. Probs do more than Fizz would.

But yeah, Gwilt out, Macdaddy in.

Mc Qualter was re-listed by the Saints. This means that some of the selecters had confidence that he may amount to something. The only means he has had to demonstrate his abilities is through playing with Casey, and he has done very well with Casey. Unless he gets some gametime in the AFL no-one will know whether we should be keeping him or not.
This also applies to Gwilt, and Fergason ( now both with some time on ground this year) and to a lesser extent Allen.
I should think that Fiora and Rix have had enough time on ground to make a decision.

Maybe they figured that he was busting his arse (going to train at Hawthorn) and given he had a contract for this year (would be paid anyway) they had nothing to lose.

Obviously Hawthorn didn't care for him, we picked him up with our final rookie draft pick.

Do you really think McQualter now, or at any time in the future, is a Premiership player?

Would he slot anywhere into any recent Premiership side?

From what I've seen of him when he's had a senior game - he's soft and the fact is he's just not up to it!

He won't be playing in a Premiership side at AFL level and therefore he is certainly not worth persisting with in future - he simply takes up a place on the list that could be given to a younger, untried player.

Yeah, Mini and the other 25 blokes who were training at Hawthorn. As I said, we were paying him and he was showing the desire so not much to lose as a backup via the rookie list. The fact is he has been playing each week when 5 of the other rookies have been injured and the other is playing reserves.

That's not the point.

In terms of selection for this week's game he is a better option than some players we currently having in our 22, eg Schneider.

You see the problem is....50% of our current 22 are not premiership side style players. Heck, they are not even finals material.

He is young. How do you know if he has improved from last year or not?

I don't think it is fair to call him soft. He is a tough, gutsy player who has always been a goto player, because of his skill and confidence. That led to him being more of an outside player with almost only an offensive game. His kicking is fairly good off both feet and he is a good decision maker. His weaknesses are his defensive game (although he does tackle well), his footspeed, (he is not slow, but he is not quick for his size) and his small size.

He was labelled as soft when, in a match against Port Adelaide, the defenders had lost track of their opponents when the ball was turned over, McQualter was quick enough of the mind to run and mark an unmarked opponent, then realized the Stuart Dew was out of his league - so he appealed to others to help him out, none could get back in time so he attempted to offer pressure. Dew just shook him off as if he wasn't there. He hasn't been given many chances since. When he did - he was asked to play a chiefly negating role - something completely foreign to him, but something expected by Lyon. He wasn't good.

Chuck him in at the expense of Dempster. We won't lose anything there by swapping those two, in fact, may even gain some skill and attacking play. Admittedly I haven't seen Mini play but we have to try something, even if it's just to boost his trade value at the end of the year (is that a consideration for rookie listed players?)

Well said. :thumbsu:

He's definitely not soft.

I have to admit that I was one of the people who Chris mentioned in the opening post. I didn't shed a tear when he was delisted but I didn't have a problem with the club adding him to the rookie list with their last selection.

What a kick up the pants that must have been? First getting delisted (when he still had another year on his contract I believe) and then secondly getting overlooked by every single club on a number of occasions in both drafts and even the rookie draft.

He's responded really well and in light of our performance this season he's exactly the kind of player I want to see given a shot. He's young and he's hungry to make a go of an AFL career.

I'd play him and McEvoy this week.

I think he comes in this week for Geary, with either King or McEvoy coming in for Ferguson.

I wouldn't want to drop Geary at this stage, and it would be good to run Ferguson for one more game - just to give him a reasonable go.
Perhaps try him in Leigh Fisher's spot. And Gwilt out.
Not sure what they would do if Gilbert tests OK, whether they would put him straight in or run him in Casey first.

I doubt Gilbo would be rushed straight in. Casey have a big game against Sandringham this week and he could be better used there to get the run back in the legs!

Andrew McQualter takes second chance
Jon Ralph | June 27, 2008 12:00am

IN isolation, Andrew McQualter's fight to break into St Kilda's best 22 this season could be pitched as a tale of a long-shot rookie made good. Taken with St Kilda's second-last rookie pick last year, 22-year-old McQualter has won elevation, and kudos for his past fortnight.

But when you are a former first-round draft pick, nothing is that simple.

Dumped by St Kilda with a year to run on his contract last year, then rookie-listed at the death knock, McQualter is looking at 2008 as his second chance at establishing an AFL career.

Acutely aware that this is his make-or-break year, McQualter hopes a radically different attitude and a new level of fitness can keep him in the St Kilda side.

McQualter is not the first young kid to realise almost too late that talent only gets you so far at the top level.

"It has been different for me in a lot of ways," said McQualter of his new start.

"I am pulling my weight this year, whereas last year I wasn't. I was ordinary and I was behind where I should have been. I wasn't really contributing to the team.

"This year I have been fitter and a lot more determined in a lot of ways. I got myself into a false sense of security thinking I was working hard, and it was a reality check (to be dumped). It was something that needed to happen for me to pull my finger out."

Considered a future star after captaining Victoria Country throughout his junior career, inside onballer McQualter managed 23 games in his first three years at St Kilda.

But when he gained 5kg of muscle in the pre-season last year to help in tagging jobs, he found he could not carry the weight, or be midfield-fit.

By season's end, first-year coach Ross Lyon had seen enough to let him go.

He trained for five weeks at Hawthorn, but had no guarantees from anyone he would get another chance.

"I hadn't heard from anyone at all. I was nervous. There was no coverage (of the rookie draft), so I just had to wait for a phone call. It was a massive relief, and just another opportunity," he said.

"It gave me an attitude that there was, to a certain extent, no pressure on me. There were no expectations. I just had to do the best I could do and whatever would come of that would come."

McQualter turned goalkicking midfielder with excellent performances for the Casey Scorpions, and has averaged 15 possessions and three tackles since being elevated in Round 12. But he is under no illusions about holding his spot in the side.

"What I focus on is my work ethic, chasing and tackling and defensive pressure," he said.

"I don't have a lot of tricks, and they have to be spot on for me to be able to play senior footy. Whatever the coach asks, I have to do. That will help me with the best possible chance for my career and for the team."

St Kilda travels to the Gold Coast to take on the Kangaroos tomorrow night in yet another season-defining game.

And while their footy has not been pretty this year, McQualter says the Saints have a quiet determination.

"In-house we are still quite positive. We believe we can play good footy, we can see things starting to work and we can see the positive side of things," he said.

"The season is still wide open. Maybe not in the top four, but in the eight there are spots there for us. We have just got to keep cracking in."

Atleast he puts his head over.

i just dont understandwhy weused a first round draft pick on this guy.

When someones is as small as he is surely he needs to be alot quicker than he is.

Hope he goes ok, might be a solid player.

I was ropeable when we selected him with Wood still available.

Still, he dug deep tonight and I was impressed with his final quarter
