must admit it was pretty funny hearing one of the games best ever small forwards, talking down small forwards..

Its positive thinking so (duh) but I just have a really strong feeling Medhurst is going to absolutely explode at the pies much the same as I am confident Tarrant will do the same at Fremantle...although perhaps not straight away for Taz but I hope he does.

He's looking at the whole trade the wrong way imo. The Pies didn't trade Tarrant for Medhurst. They traded him for pick 8 and the opportunity at 2 bites at the top 10 of the draft. Medhurst was a side issue. Could you imagine if we traded Taz for pick 16 and McDougall like he suggested.

why has daics and the media seem to have forgotten that rusling is a KP prospect that can fulfill taz's role and travis cloke is also another KP prospect- so rocca wont be our leading focal point, we will have a really good mix if you add our smaller types- bucks, didak, medders, davis, thomas etc. But with taz's departure i think we should draft another KP forward prospect for cover.

And Daics won a flag for us in the whopping forward line of him and Gav Brown!

Brown may be a good comparrison for Ruz, but then we have Anthony Rocca, Travis Cloke, a resting Josh Fraser and Nathan Bloody Buckley.

The current Premiers had gorilla Lynch, then a very very outside leading tall in Hansen who gets further up the ground than Tarrant. And they're trading AWAY "guns" like McDougal!

Look,
alot of people rate Tarrant, and alot of supporters like where not too happy to see him go, but if we all think with our head and not our hearts the best way to judge players is judging them on the BIG STAGE!!!!

Chris Tarrant played in both our grand finals in 02 and 03 and didnt do much at all, he is not a big game player! All the big bags of goals he has kicked hasnt been against top opposition, a few years back he kicked 7 in a match against Melbourne, but other than that he is a fast key marking forward.

thoughts?

Daic's makes a fair point and with this type of trade only time will tell. Its a classic win-win provided our recruitment people aren't collectively all taking a dump when our selections are made in Nov. With last years picks and this years we have a sure fire opp to work through a mini rebuild.

One of the reasons we traded Tarrant was because we had some sort of depth in that area. We had Rusling and T.Cloke missing out games because of him, which is fine, but we have admitted we need to rebuild at least mid-term. Even an extra 10 games in a season can make the world of difference for young players. And now Daicos says we should get McGoogly or whatever his name is to cover for the loss of Tarrant? That defeats the purpose almost. I respect Daicos and he doesn't usually have a cheap shot at the club, well he hardly has even fired a shot at the club in that article it is just spun that way, he actually was pretty reasonable. I guess Tony Shaw was unavailble to comment or all he said was "I TOLD YOU SO! I WAS RIGHT TONY SHAW FOR PREZ!".

You can tell Daicos wouldn't make a good coach (apart from MAYBE skills coach).

Also why do alot of people think because we have traded Tarrant that we admitted we were wrong or that Taz is no good?

The one thing that Daicos misses is the most important. Collingwood are finally holding people accountable, making decisions and moving people on at last. It would have been dead easy to accept Tarrant poor off field behaviour and his failure to improve his game, notably his kicking for the sake of the number 20’s they sell by the bucket load and the safety of not letting a player go that becomes a great player.

Tarrant may be the only big name on field casualty and IMO an opportunity was missed to cut far deeper, but at leat it is a start and with the off field action it at last seems we are taking failure seriously. Eddie should publicly apologise to Tony Shaw at the AGM and commit to continuing to hold every one accountable for results. MM should get up and hold his hand up to be accountable as well. Maybe then we can get somewhere over the course of 2 or 3 years. That’s hoping for a bit much but at least we have acted for once rather than promised to act. I can only imagine where we’d be if this happened 2 years back.

Note the way that the journalist keeps having to point out that Collingwood also got the #8 pick in the draft and that we'll get a good young player with that.

Fair dinkum, there have been some dead set dropkicks shooting their mouth off about the trade like it was Chris Tarrant for Paul Medhurst straight up.

That's like saying if you trade your BMW for a Ford and $50,000 cash, it's a bad trade because a BMW is better than a Ford...

Daicos stated: Why did we get Paul Medhurst?

He is correct in saying we have enough small forwards, I think Egan and Cook are very similar to Medhurst, and you can add Alan Didak and Leon Davis to the list. What Daicos does not understand is, we wanted Pick 8 from Richmond in the Tarrant deal, to off load him to Fremantle. Freo were only willing to off load Medhurst, but because we demanded Pick 8 from Richmond, the deal was approved by both parties and Richmond were more than happy to attain Polak's services. I think it was one of the most well-constructed smoothly run trades in this decade.

Good luck to Tarrant. I hope he can resurrect his career, don't ignore the fact Chris played 9 years at the Club for a total of 150 games.

Percentage of those players who play as a leading small forward:

0%

Davis can, and I've pushed for him to be used in this role forever, but now he can lead and feed accross half forward. Didak is a half forward. Eags is capable in the forward 50, but lead and mark? Not his forte.

We've never had a leading small forward, due to Malthouse's preferrence against them.

Yes we seem to keep "moving on players" who actually have talent , yet guys like Lonie , Richards , O'Bree (good at getting it out crap at delivering it) ect remain at the club despite their major flaws!

Do we really have too many small forwards?

Didak - being developed into a midfielder
Egan - Could play midfield, halfback, or forward
Cook - first year player
Davis - has underachieved in his career. Can rotate through the midfield.
Medhurst - small forward but can play a tall, leading style rather than a crumbing style. Also a potential midfielder too.

Most teams play at least two smalls in the forward line these days.

I hardly think thats an excess. Having Medhurst at the club may put a rocket up Davis and to a lesser extent Cook.

Also Tarrant in many ways "played small" so him being out of the team opens up a vacancy.

Whether we have too many small forwards is the wrong question IMO. Do we have enough quality midfielders is the right question and the answer is definitely no. The small forwards number is only an issue because list sizes are limited and we have too many slow midfielders and assorted duds. Ad a ruckman and 2 quality mids and the rotating small forwards would be very handy. As it stands most are not quality mids so they have to earn a keep as small forwards and you can only really have 1 or 2 in the side at once. Our midfield rotations don’t have a good enough top end to get away with makeshift small forwards come midfieders.
