The only person that should decide Medhurst's fate is Medhurst. The guy is an unusual and unique talent.

To be honest, I can't really see this. He is a small forward who has a game developed as the key forward, but who hasn't been able to adapt to any other role. When he has been played as our key forward we were ordinary as a team. Hutton had the same problem and Williams from Hawthorn has a similar problem.

I certainly don't think Medhurst has done anything to earn the right to decide his own fate re staying or not. Unless deciding his own fate entails making himself an automatic selection based on his performance and attitude.

The same can be said for other players (ad infinitum) from other positions.

He hasnt done anything .. true.
Like most players who want to be traded their wishes are usually met. Therefore if he wants to stay then FFC should go to all lenghts to develop him.

We differ then on how we see his his potential and ability but the same can be said on the differing types of players that have, and still play the game.
I do believe he is a unique talent. Most pocket players are. He though (imo) could become more.
I dont see being an automatic selection as being important to his ability to decide his future. As a depth player he would be invaluable.

Poor old Medders. I love the guy. it all started when he was getting bagged out for being selfish and taking pot shots at goal. he then bulked up to get more defensive and that trashed last season. This year he is a much better shape and was in some great form early in the year dishing goals off to others. But then the snipers took pot shots for no goals, so he trys again and it hasn't worked.

When he dished off that pass after Pav had selflessly set him up - it was tragic.

I think he would suit a Melbourne club where he is not the local rag's favourite whipping boy, and his own fans' target of abuse and vitriol.

I hope he stays, and I hope if he goes he does well. Big fan. Sad to see him look lost on the field. Gets good possies, takes marks, but no confidence in the kick at goal.

I am going to have another crack at this because I think emotion is getting in the way of common sense in this debate.

When it comes to Paul Medhurst ,it seems to me at least, that a lot of people have to take off their rose coloured glasses.

All I see is...(and I promise no offense is intended)

Poor Medhurst
I love the guy.
His potential
Remember when he kicked 9 goals against...
His return to form is just around the corner
He adds depth
It should be his decision to go
The coaches have stuffed his game

It goes on and on and on...

Can anyone give me an example of consistent ie;( 3 weeks in a row) GOOD form over the past two years??
Can anyone honestly tell me that he has developed as a player in comparison to Mundy, Johnson etc..etc over the same period, does he have the same potential as them? And remember he has been in the system longer.??
Can anyone tell me that he has the ability to adapt to a midfield role ( when required) by the coaching staff when we need him and as the modern game requires??
Can anyone tell me how you would defend him as a player if he was showing the same form over the same period in an opposition squad??
Can anyone tell me what use to us he will be as a trade if he continues this form into next year??

The loyalty shown to him is admirable and worthy.

But I think a hell of a lot of you have to start facing facts and stop living in the past and wishing for a better future.

I cant stop you selectively editing this to answer bits you dont agree with but I would hope some sensible debate, without clouded emotion ensues.

NO MORE ON PAUL MEDHURST FROM ME I PROMISE.

good points bushie.interesting when you think that alot of clubs will fall over each other to get him and polak if put up for trade.i dont understand why he was dropped after the geelong game.he was very good in that one and other players like m carr had poor form before that game yet he was dropped.(no one could kick straight that day)imo being dropped after that game has hurt his confidence more than before.the year before they built his body up too much and he struggled

Interesting - are you reading a different thread than me? All I can see is some honest assessment that he is in bad form and down on confidence, which is sad, because we like him and enjoyed his better moments at the club.

I think this is where I am questioning what your saying, and it isn't a big point. "Unique" and "most" seem a bit of a cotradiction.

If he is just a pocket player then we may be better with someone else filling the role who can rotate more successfully into the midfield. This certainly seems to be the match committees desire. So for me mids like Hasleby, Bell, Headland (even Browne and MacManus) offer more to the team than specialist forward pocket.

Also, as someone who is used to being the "go to" man in the forward line Medhurst has consistently lead into the path of our key forwards, and has not been able to adjust his game to the new structure. Happy for him to be on the list and continually develop, but he needs to show that is what he wants.

Bit like a diamond. While there are plenty of them none are the same. He though, has a few more facets. Getting the best out of him would be a challenge for anybody.

You can't have too many AFL quality players. If we trade him we get what - a third round draft choice. Anyone want to bet their house on picking up a champion at that level?
The guy can play, two time leading goal scorer is testament to that. Yes he is out of form at the moment but he's no orphan. Tarrant, Rocka, Essendon.
Give him time, he will come good.

Well CC on fox footy or news , not sure where I saw it but said he has a high opinion of medhurst and said there is no way he will be traded. He has one more year on his contract and if he has his way he will be with the freo footy club for another 5 years at least, that he has matured late and his best football is ahead of him. He said he was very gifted and will be a star.

On todays performance anyway...he won't be playing next week & more than likely played his last game in the purple.

Would trade him in an instant. I know Port & Melbourne were interested last trade period....

Moloney?
Damon White?
Surjan? - I think Port would want more?

I would give up Whitey plus a 3rd round pick for Medhurst in a heartbeat. Whitey's a real tryer but at the end of the day he's a workhorse but Medhurst is a gun. Surjan-Medhurst would be a fair trade but i'd have to think about it...Surj is gonna be a gun hardnut.

Lets just say there's about as much chance of that happening as Pavlich for Daniel Ward.

I can't see a club willing to give up more than a 3rd round pick or so for him, and even then I pray Melbourne isn't the club to do so.

Watched the whole Claremont game on weekend...he probably played worse (if that could happen), then he did the previous week v Carlton. Every time he touched the ball he tried to do too much with it & was caught holding the ball. Had 1 gimme chance at goal when Claremont way was ahead & he muffed it. He sat alot on the bench with ice on his knee but played in last quarter, with no impact whatsoever.

Looked totally out of confidence, was dropping his head.....I've never seen an Afl player so dejected...& he was playing Wafl footy! Another game like that & Prescott will have no worries in demoting him to Claremont ressies!

I hope he comes good again if CC says we're keeping him...but he has a LONG way to go before getting back to his days of 2003.

This could of been written word for word about Headland 12 months ago, and about Farmer 12 months earlier. Patience and foresight is a virtue.

Or Grover in 2004 and early 2005. I remember when people wanted to trade Scotty Thornton because he hadn't done anything. Josh Carr looked pretty ordinary last year at times.
