What is this crap with the AFL bringing in a mediator for the Warnock Situation?

Does the AFL want Warnock at Carlton? Has Pratt giving Vladimir a couple of dollars under the table?

Where was the mediator trying to get Nick Stevens to Collingwood in 2004?

(or the hundred other talked-about trades that have never happened)

This has been in place for at least 2 years. It is the player and his manager who have called for the mediator in this situation. I think this is the first case where one has been requested

What crap!

There are 3 choices...
1. Carlton and Freo deal (if this doesn't happen), then
2. Warnock stays at Freo (if he still wants to go), then only option is,
3. Warnock goes into PSD

There should be no need for the AFL to get involved. Aren't they controlling enough as it is, now they need to be the mediator? The AFL HQ are the biggest dictators since Saddam!

What does Melbourne have to say about this who are also rumoured to want Warnock? Do they also seek the AFL to intervene?

The Afl haven't called the mediator. THE Player has. After mediation if there is still no deal then he will end up in the PSD. Mediation doesn't mean a deal must happen.

Its irrelevant who requested the mediator. The AFL is the independant ruling body of footy and should not be involved in club to club trades. It is ridiculously inappropriate. I hope that common sense is followed and the AFL refuses this stupid request.

I think I read somewhere that Freo still do not have to abide by the mediators decision or recommendation

Either way....
I bet Carlton gets him for pick 24. And I am sure you'll read later that Freo are still unhappy about it.

Of course they don't.
It seems all the mediator will do is put forward possible alternatives, it's up to both clubs to decide whether they're acceptable. Sometimes an independent person can be helpful in negotiations where other parties are too close to see things clearly.

I can understand Warnock's manager calling for mediation - his player wants to move, the two parties involved do not seem to be able to reach a solution, he should do all he can to try and make the deal happen.

In the end, Fremantle would be crazy to turn back pick 24 and allow Warnock to enter the PSD for nothing. Maybe they're gambling on him choosing Freo over Melbourne, but I'd expect Carlton and Fremantle to come to terms by the end of the week.

It doen't really matter whether or not Freo can refuse the ruling of the mediator or not. Even indirect pressure from the AFL in club to club trades is grossly inappropriate. They're supposed to be the independant ruling body of the AFL.

I dont think many of you guys understand what mediation is.

A mediator is an independant person in a dispute who attempts through various means to bring the parties together to the point where they reach an agreement.

A mediator does not make a ruling (that would be arbitration).

Which the AFL have said they will not do (arbitration). However I have to ask why this trade requires mediation at all. One can't shake the feeling that the deal will now go ahead for pick 24. Why don't Melbourne just offer pick 19? If Warnock doesn't want to sign off on that deal he can go in the draft. He wanted to come home to Victoria, and he will still get that wish.

I'd say considering. Wood fetched 14 in last years draft 24 is still a bit high considering they have shown pretty similar levels of talent. I really hope the AFL stick to their guns and Melbourne pick Warnock up in the PSD. It would IMO be a little dent in Carltank's bargaining power when luring players with $$$ signs. It's all good and well to be able to pay a player and get the player to play hard ball with his side but in the end players will not want the risk of either A looking like an idiot and changing their stance or B ending up at a club in a rut like melbourne.

I think Freo are also making a stance re: Their poor trade history. I think it's a bit of a macho muscle flex to try and say they want to dictate trades they are involved in from now on.

I know what mediation is. Mediation is only really independant in a perfect world. There is just too much room for conflict of interests here. The fact that this is the AFL we are talking about leaves me less than filled with confidence. The only influence the AFL should have in trade week is by determining the rules and regulations that it is run under. Outside of this they should step back and let it run its course - provided the rules are met.

The mediator can also work the opposite way that Carlton fans are expecting.

His job is to try and get the player to the club of his choice... Carlton may just be asked to accomodate or equal a trade deal closer to Freos other offers

I hope so too!
