basically you need to stop eating crap ,and get your arse outside and do some excercising

Basically cholesterol is a fatty substance made by the liver. You will only find it in foods which have a liver.. so only animal products. Saturated fats will raise your LDL Cholesterol.. the bad cholesterol whereas monounsaturated and to a lesser extent, polyunsaturated fats decrease this bad cholesterol.

So what I'm trying to get across is decrease your saturated fat intake. This is found in foods such as takeaways, biscuits, cake, sausagees, full cream dairy and beef fat. Good fat (yes there is such a thing) is found in lean meat, olive and canola oil, nuts, avocado, FISH and even switch to a polyunsaturated oil/margarine. Eat a handful of unsalted nuts a day and this will steadily lower your blood cholesterol. It comes down to making healthy choices with your nutrition. Replace cakes with fruit. Avoid frying food. Substitute full cream for reduced fat dairy and modify your food i.e trim fat off meat. Also, regarding omega 3 fats in fish, some of the lowest omega containing fish are barramundi and dhufish.. herring, mackerel, gemfish, sardines, tuna, trout, king dory.. all high in the good stuff.

(and I almost forgot.. no healthy nutrition is truly complete without some exercise daily ;))

I'm not a qualified nutritionist but have done and will do many more nutrition units at uni. Feel free to ignore this advice.

That is very high. It should be lower and you have to change your diet.

You didn't mention Salmon. Apparently that is the highest omega 3 content out of all of the above.

Think that should be reversed. ;)

Well I'm not gonna name every fish in the sea, but yeah looking back at my notes atlantic salmon has 549mg/100g which is highest and gemfish comes in at second place.

Sometimes (like in my case), it can be mainly hereditary factors which cause it too. Mine's pretty high despite the fact that I eat well, exercise (play hockey amongst other things), don't smoke, drink irregularly and am "ideal" weight. ********es me off enormously, but like they say "you can't chose your relatives".

Cholesterol isn't obtained from any other source though, its made my the body when its needed. Its needed in order to transfer the molecules of saturated fats around the body, so really cholesterol lever is an indication of how much saturated fat you have. But its the same thing, its bad if its high etc. Its just how they measure it. So cut down on saturated fat foods - fat that comes from animals.

Interesting as we have no history of heart troubles in our family but from what I have found out we all have high levels.

It is true that I do love my steak and butter on my vegetables and my diet can be improved and so could the level of exercise but I am currently under weight if anything.

I had another blood test today to check what the level is.

Thanks for everyones information as it has given me a starting point for my research.
