The 2010 and 2011 drafts which GWS and GCS plundered cost us potential super stars. Really we could have potentially picked up Bennell and Conca in one draft and then Jeremy Cameron/Dylan Shiel and Ellis in the next.

I'm all for the expansion teams but they have cost us and players such as Deledio in a big big way. If we are going to rise from mediocrity we must start shaking the GWS and GCS trees and forcing some prime fruit to fall out. Caddy was terrific last night against the pies. Tyson kills us every time we play the Demons. Time for us to make a move.

We got by through those drafts with recycled players that improved our depth and kept us competitive.... what we need to do know is get rid of almost all of them and bring in as much quality young talent as we can....

I agree we lack elite talent.

Not easy to accumulate though the recycled player method mind you!

We are not as bad as North in terms of list management though even though atm they have a strongly list.

North should start falling way probably next year I would think

Expansion hurt us timing wise, no question. However we had much bigger issues that effected our list than this. We were already crap and unbalanced prior to expansion occurring, so all it has done is slowed the rate of our rebuild, nothing more

What about the other 14 clubs? How did it effect them? All those picks they took in the late teens , 20's , 30's and 40's that are playing decent football.

This could be the catch cry of excuses for Hardwick in a couple of weeks time now that he's brought out a video which actually proves that our players did train this pre season.

The sad part is Benny Gale used this excuse 2 weeks ago on Footy Classified which worries me .

The other clubs were pushed back even further than us. Carlton finished 8th and should've received pick 9 (Prestia) under normal circumstances, but got pick 18 (Matthew Watson) instead. In 2011 they should've got pick 12 (Adams, Docherty, Smith, Ellis) but instead got pick 22 (Bootsma).

Did the expansion clubs come in, in 1982... The RFC has been a bucket of puss and home to mediocrity long before all the clubs moved back a few picks in a couple of drafts.
True, but when we finally started to get our act together off the field expansion and priority picks etc came in.

But expansion hasn't changed whats going on off the field, not has it made any difference to the basic fundamental errors that the Richmond Playing Group serve up on most weeks. Yes it has had an adverse effect on the RFC, like all clubs. But to suggest it as a reason for Richmond's continued shortcomings whilst trying to side step the real and obvious reasons is just another cop out and excuse.

It's one reason, for us and a lot of clubs in similar positions, just one factor as you said, but a factor non the less, we aren't as far away as some may think.
In my optimistic opinion of course.

Clubs a long way off at the moment.

Excuses!

Our development has just been poor, and not selecting Heppell so far.
Always hate those. Every single club could have drafted better. We didnt get Heppel in 2010 sure. But in 2011 we get Ellis, GWS had 11 picks before him and they still didnt pick him up. We couldve picked up Sheriden instead of Ellis. But we didnt, we made the right choice that year. Cant get the best player every year.

Mediocrity, being stuck in the past, and poor standards of development can take a long long time to rectify...

Expansion didn't cause your/our problems...it just exacerbated them. Our collective shitness is on our respective shoulders, no-one else's...

Nothing to do with being able to hit targets and take marks, fumbling etc. Effort, dedication etc etc are the hallmarks of good sides. Look at Geelong, lost bucket loads of talent over the last few years, including arguably one of the best players to ever grace the field and they still find a way to win.

It's called culture and we are sadly lacking in that department at the moment.

Also a decent game plan would help. Although I challenge anyone to give me an explanation of our game plan. I remember Caroline Wilson asking Hardwick what the Richmond way was and he really gave a non answer. That should have sent alarm bells ringing all over the joint (internally) because a coach should have that downpat in five words.

Close thread as Expansion is another lame excuse which the club has hidden behind for three decades now
Lets crawl out of this limp mode and say no to effing excuses and do something about constructive for once
I'm sick of Casino and BH private school boy drafting
I want guy with hardness toughness skills and football brains drafted not nice bloody boys
We are soft soft soft and softer
DH LMFAO a tough man player turned to a player hugging coach
What a limp football club and Benny Gale couldn't see it
from EF 2013 and signs the accountant up for two more years. Campaigners run this club, I'm now convinced

What is the BH private school drafting bias?

All I know is we f.... ed up another draft not getting Lever as I suspected just after draft time!

In fact on the main draft board I asked posters to use their influence:rolleyes::D to let Lever slip to see whether RFC would let him slip and truely f... up another draft!

How do you know that?
And when you say 'far away' what are you referring to?

I'm afraid that my measure for success is on field improvement.

And I'm afriad I don't see it. Last year and this year. And I hate to say it, as 1 of my measures of success is making the finals, but in hindsight, it might have better for the club to have not played. End Dimma's tenure. And have a clean sweep of coaching staff

Of course I don't know that, who knows what the future holds. I feel that we are a muc...ah, forget it, I'll revisit this later.
Footy sucks.
