Bit of Metallica discussion lately, so I just thought I'd say I prefer Megadeth.
Much better band through the 1990s and of course The System Has Failed (2004) is so much better than Saint Anger its not even worth discussing. Not to mention the live show, while I love Metallica, Megadeth were able to play the small venues and the shows were much more intense.

Both legendary bands though. Dave M seems a bit too obsessed in Metallica but he has said it was the way Some kind of monster was edited...his putdown of Lars on the latest album was brilliant :)

Also word is that Mustaine was going to go solo, but has decided he likes the new Deth touring lineup that much they're going back into the studio :thumbsu:

Got the Megadeth greatest hits hanging around here somewhere, something I really enjoyed. Been waiting upon finances but would like to explore their back catalogue a bit more. Any ideas on where I should start?

first of all ignore Peace Sells, its overrated as hell, and ive never liked countdown and younthanasia, far too popish.

id start with their 2 best 'classic' releases Killing is my Business and So far So Good So what! and then finish off with their greatest album Rust in Peace

Rust In Peace is the best thrash album made I think. The only thrash album better than than the Metallica Lightning/Puppets/Justice period.
All the other Megadeth albums had some great songs, but they're not great albums overall.

Everyone who is into classic thrash such as Tallica deth and slayer should pick up 'Twisted into form' by Forbidden. Paul Bostaph from Slayer on drums, and easily my fave thrash album of all time.

I raise you a "First Strike Still Deadly" by Testament - re-recording of classic tunes from the first 2 testament albums.

absolutely crushes.

"Rust In Peace" is rare.

It's where a truly great band absolutely hit their peak. It's where their peak songwriting and playing was on show, but before any sense of commercialism had set in. Don't get me wrong, I love their subsequent releases, but RIP is the last true Megadeth nail-your-nuts-to-the-wall release.

Best thrash album ever made? Probably. It had the production to show the quality of the songs and the players too, without losing its brutality and topical relevance.

Definitely the best thrash/metal album to come out of the USA from that era (if not all time). Sodom's "Persecution Mania" or its subsequent tour album "Mortal Way Of Live" would give it a run though, among the European releases.

Have you heard Forbidden's 'Distortion'? I quite liked that album, although I don't think many other people do. Feed the Hand, Rape and the title track were great tracks I thought. That's the only Forbidden I own. I have listened to the first 2 albums too ages ago - Distortion was a bit different to those. Might have to track them down now you've reminded me of Forbidden - cheers.

Speaking of thrash, has anyone heard Apocalyptica?

If not, there's sort a spoiler involved with them, so if you feel like a bit a test, download this song 'Prologue' (I uploaded it to rapidshare) and listen to it BEFORE READING ANY FURTHER than the link...
(click the FREE button, then wait about 20 sec for the timer to reach 0, enter the security number thing and "start download")

You could probably tell, but there is no guitars in that song!! Just 4 dudes on cello, with Dave Lombardo as a guest drummer (and for quite a few of their other songs). Their first album is all Metallica covers, the second album Metallica, Sepultura, Pantera and others, but after that it's all their own music and it's these albums with their own stuff which are much better. The albums 'Cult' or 'Reflections' are the best, the latter has the most of the Dave Lombardo songs. They're completely instrumental albums too by the way. Their newest self-titled one is a bit more rock with a couple of guest vocalists. Most of their singles they do a 2nd version with a guest vocalist.
Pretty amazing they have no guitars I reckon.
