Would love some help from Victorians on this, for my mates 21st me and a few other mates are taking him on a boys trip to Melbourne which will encompass seeing the Cup at Flemington.

Planning on just getting General Admission tickets but I have two questions:

First: Would our South Australian Student cards count as student concession tickets for the purpose of the Melbourne Cup?

Second: I notice there are a ****load of options for tickets. Which one is the best?

Cheers,

1) Should be right with SA student cards.

2) Click on the link that says "general admission" if you just want general access to the racecourse and aren't concerned with having a grandstand seat.

3) Prepare for a BIG day. There'll be 110k people crammed into Flemington which means huge lines for food, drink, betting, toilets, ATM's, public transport, etc... Sounds like a hassle but it's worth going to at least once (particularly if you're not from Victoria).

This, it's crammed full of people and there is massive ques for everything. Other than that it's a top day out, just remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen :thumbsu:

If you are not in the Nursery you are not cool.

With the new car park near the Nursery and the Rails, a cracker field and this year being the 150th running of the Cup, who knows what the official attendence will be this year? Could be anything?

Get ready from plenty of drunk, randy fillies. The easiest week in Melbourne to get a consensual Stephen Milne away.

My advice would be to skip the Cup and go to one of the other days.

This ^

Cup day is bogan day. Derby day is by far the best day of the spring carnival.

Derby Day for ladies & purists
Oaks day for pure young bogans
Melbourne Cup for purists and posers
Stakes day for purists & chronic gamblers

There we go.

Also, learn a good method for getting the grog in. Lines are LONG, especially at Derby and Cup.

Good 1 is always the water bottle in shrink wrap, get it out and refill, put em back in, have the corners still water.

Or bring an esky, chuck ice in the bottom then por in a couple of Vodka Bottles.

Saw one guy who cu out a loaf of bread and had a bottle in there, they caught him (weight is a problem), pringles cans are getting obvious.

Take a #1 and 2 before you get there, suit up well, SUNSCREEN! I'm always burnt like a mofo every year.

Set up near bookies and if you get there early, get your Over 18's band done QUICK and if you're on the champa's get a few bottles early and put them on ice, but god it's expensive. Think they have seppelt or yellow and it's about $8 for a 1 personal bottle. (couple of glasses).

Can be really good days, but don't get smashed the night before, left at race 6 one day because the hangover and crowd isn't a good combo.

Also, don't go too hard too early. With the sun, crowd and lack of easy water and food access.....bad.

Thanks for the advice Melbournians.

Due to exams this has been postponed to an Australian Open trip which may need a whole other advice thread!
