Food, Drink & Dining Out Melbourne Suburbs?

Hey,

Just been thinking about moving to melbourne with a mate we could do up to about $400 a week for rent. What suburbs should we be focusing on for safety, close to transport, good lifestyle etc. Any help would be appreciated

You probably need to be a bit more specific re: lifestyle. Do you want to be closer to the beach or the city? What sort of crowd are you after? Anything else you can tell us?

Fwiw, if you're prepared to pay up to $400/week, safety shouldn't be a problem where-ever you end up.
 
My only advice would be draw a line at the west of the CBD and don't cross it.

No offense to anyone who lives out there :D I just wouldn't recommend it to someone who isn't familiar with it, eg Indians.

A lot of Indians do live in the Western Suburbs however, I work in St.Albans and most of the people who come in are of Indian Descent.

However I agree that you wouldn't actually want to live there

If you're young and single then you'd want inner city, which we don't even really call the suburbs. Suburbs has connotations here which the inner city trend setters don't want to be associated with. Just about everyone does live in the suburbs though.

Carlton - Our Italian district and near Melb uni. A restaraunt district. Close to city, not much else going for it (sorry I'm not a westy).

Fitzroy, Collingwood - left wing but not exclusively, lots of bars shopping strips etc. Popular with alternative, JJJ radio types.

Richmond, Abbottsford - bit dingy, close to city, big vietnamese community on one side (only), lots of restaraunts and some popular pubs. Traditional working class area but those days are over.

Toorak, South Yarra - posh, trendy, leafy. Not everyone is a Chapel St type though. A nightclub district within. Botanical gardens borders, great for runners.

St Kilda, Elwood, Albert Park, Port Melbourne - Next to the beach. Great for outdoor types. Has it all but pricey. St Kilda is our red light district but very trendy too, and popular with locals and visitors (backpackers). Too busy to live in I'd say.

The Yarra river is good too and that runs through South Yarra, Richmond, Collingwood.

If you don't have cars that would make it easier and you could even consider right next to or even in the CBD. South Melbourne, Southbank or even Docklands now to be a real city dweller.

Check these for what $400 gets you in these areas

(and they aren't all the names, and you can go the next suburb after each of those and find yourself a bit further out and further out of 'the action' too)

Absolutely, but my subtle point was all the recent bullshit out there sources from our friendly visitors having absolutely no idea it is not safe to walk through an unlit park at 2am by yourself in West Footscray and the like.
 
Thanks alot for all the insight guys. We are both late twenties and single so we will go out a bit but not like every night. And yeah probably wont have a car at least at first. Ive only been to melbourne once but loved it. Perth is great too but just want a change and there is plenty of jobs over there as ive been keeping an eye out. I was looking at rentals in east malvern and hawthorn what are those like?

I've lived in Hawthorn but nearer Richmond. Both fine, upper class 'white' suburbs, inner enough. Be wary though some pockets will not be so close to direct public transport. There's two train lines serving those areas and being near a station will be better. Trams lines are common but once you get out a bit a train will be the better option as trams stop a lot. Hawthorn would be preferred out of the 2. Monash Freeway cuts through Hawthorn-Malvern, though above ground.

Consider Kew as well, it's just north of Hawthorn and a similar area.
 
You should join mantis in the far out eastern reaches of Croydon... $400 a week would be enough to rent a veritable mansion.
 
Hawthorn tends to draw a younger crowd at the nightspots mostly around Glenferrie/Burwood rd, school leavers & students. My parents live in Hawthorn so and I went to all these places naturally. Broadly speaking when they become young professionals they move to Richmond or somewhere right next to the city.

<- Kew is a premier suburb, there are a few pubs around Kew junction but they are a lot more laid back, the places are spread out and there is no real night buzz. Of course you can stay here and tram/taxi elsewhere since its still pretty damn close to the CBD. I chose Kew for this and it is very suburban & quiet (cept for the traffic). Right next door is Abbotsford/Richmond which are much higher density.
 
Fitzroy, Elwood or Albert Park.

Elwood is close to St Kilda and sits on the bay, but is probably a little more pleasant, green and quiet.

Still not to far from the CBD and has Elwood village with some great local deli's/bakery/eateries.

Fitzroy because it is just north of the CBD and has a certain bohemian vibe. Quite a few little nifty bars, places to eat out and shopping/entertainment. Also good proximity to Carlton and Collingwood.

Albert Park is directly south of the city on the bay. Probably my favourite of the three, you have the beach and a charming suburb with a mixture of terrace and new housing. Not a huge amount of bars or shopping, more restaurants and cafes and it also has close proximity to South Melbourne Markets.

There is the Grand Prix every year (though I don't think think this counts as a good thing for locals). When you travel into the CBD it is the side with the gallery/arts district, Crown and Southbank, Botanical Gardens, Fed Square etc. (if you are into the touristy stuff).
Great public transport as there are 3 separate trams which travel through there.

It is also very close to South Yarra and St Kilda. Lastly and most importantly the best burgers and ice cream are to be found there (Andrews Hamburgers and Jocks Ice Cream).
 
Fitzroy, St Kilda, Richmond, South Yarra, Prahran, you will find a pretty good place for 400 at any of these places, all close to CBD, have a good strip of shops for day/night

If you have the money I'd have a look near Camberwell:thumbsu:
 
Whatever you do, please don't move to inner city areas for the 'atmosphere' and then complain about the loud music from the local pubs.

Not cool.

aha, no chance! great info fellas definately helps a perthy and i guess anyone else thinking about a stint in melbourne so cheers :thumbsu:

for $400 a week you might be able to get a place in richmond (albiet a small one).

Inner Eastern Suburbs are reasonably safe (Moorabbin, Cheltenham etc.) however, once again, depends on what you are looking for
