If you've got no car then I'd be looking for something with a tram line or train (or both). Hawthorn, East St Kilda/Prahran, South Yarra are all easy to get around from by Public Transport.

Elwood, i've lived in a few different parts of Melbourne (Cheltenham, Richmond, Brunswick, Camberwell) and finally settled here and it's a great spot. You'll be able to find a nice 2 bedroom apartment for $400. My favourite part about it is that it's so close to the St Kilda, CBD and has easy public transport or road access to Richmond but at the same time it's residential streets are really quiet.
$380 will get you a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom, ducted heating and cooled, double auto garage, single carport & outdoor piss barn palace 25 minutes from the city.

that's not melbourne, that's hoppers crossing
I'd rather live 20 k's further out in luxury, than in some noisy, tiny box.

Where do you normally like to go out on the weekends? i.e. Subi/Claremont, Northbridge, Mt Lawley, Leederville, Freo etc etc. A lot of the areas that have been already mentioned by others are sort of larger versions of the above. Thanks alot for all the insight guys. We are both late twenties and single so we will go out a bit but not like every night. And yeah probably wont have a car at least at first. Ive only been to melbourne once but loved it. Perth is great too but just want a change and there is plenty of jobs over there as ive been keeping an eye out. I was looking at rentals in east malvern and hawthorn what are those like?
Whilst I take your point, there's little reason to move from Perth to somewhere like Melbourne and then live in a house just like all the houses in Perth in a suburb just like all the suburbs in Perth. Compared to Perth, the weather in Melbourne is total crap, so to make up for it you need to experience the inner-city lifestyle that just isn't the same in Perth.I'd rather live 20 k's further out in luxury, than in some noisy, tiny box.
I know a decaf latte with a twist of lemon drinker when I see one.
