GEEEEEE everyone is very upset about being told melbournes recruiting has been bad, i didnt reliase you guys actually went to the football anymore.

Have a go at richmonds recruiting, bring up danny meyer being a dud and tambling being picked up before franklin!!! I agree with you all. Meyer has shown nothing and while tambling may turn out to be a very good player, i doubt he will come close to franklin.

Thats not the point of the thread. Your recruiting has been terrible and Cameron is massively overated when you look at your list that he built. But i guess he is our problem now.

Junior 24 your a clown your "awesome" recuiters of the past missed out on franklin and pavlich.

And Mclean being the only good pick up a certain Nathan Jones is also a very handy pick up of late whose progress as been rapid.

The best thing about CC was his ability to use the late picks and pre-season/rookie drafts, blokes like Bruce wheelan robbo macca i am sure there are some more but can't remeber of the top of my head.

Well, first up, because of a typo Matthew Whelan isn't counted for us. Add one more hundred-game player.

But to respond to the Richmond guys, CAC is revered because he turned around a truly miserable draft performance - we absolutely SUCKED until he came along.
His 1999 draft was so successful it transformed the club - Bruce, Green, Wheatley, Whelan and even Godfrey played 100 games, all from one draft
It took a few years from there but you'd have to say our drafting has been first rate for a while now.
In the last few years we've held onto senior players, perhaps for a bit too long, as illustrated by our ten delistings this year.

06 - four picks 05 - four picks 04 - three picks 03 - four picks

Fifteen ND picks for nine definate players, plus Davey off the rookie list and of course some players where the 'jury is still out'.
Richmond have used 27 Draft picks in the same period.
Because of a combination of injuries (Bartram, Petterd, Rivers, Sylvia and Mclean have all been hit hard) and veteran players being preferred, our younger players haven't seen as many games as they probably should have.

Anyway, one Rising Star winner, one runner up, two third places, average of three nominees a year, this suggests the drafting is fine.

In short, Melbourne's problems haven't been in the draft, and Richmond really have picked up a winner in Craig Cameron.

I'm basing it on all of the drafts since 1991. CAC was in charge for ten years. As I said the top of our drafts have been average...
The recent form has been good, since 03 we have had 4th most games played from draft prospects.
2000 16th, 2001 14th, 2002 8th...

So it seems it's 14 to 13 your way (with us taking 3 top 21 picks to your 2 this year it should balance up at 16 a piece!), but considering both of these groups will be the core of our next premiership attempts (or the team that takes you past 9th) I'd rather stick with our lot.
We have had similar picks (we had 3 +5 in 2003, you had 1 and 4 in 2004) but we have played finals in 02, 04, 05 and 06 and had a bad year last year where as you have been rebuilding for most of this period.
I'd say it proves that Craig Cameron is better than your current recruiters, but the real proof might come in the flag(s) we win between 2010 and 2012 when the oldest of these players is 29 and the guys drafted this year are 23.

I have based this on what have done in the career so far not what they are capable of potentially but what we have seen them actually do. Bell, frawley, bartram, rivers, mclean, moloney, sylvia, petterd, bate, davey, newton, jones. We have drafted ALL these kids which are so much better then Richmonds rabble that its not funny, WHILE we have been playing finals, and have been competitive. Richmond have had high picks for the last 20 years and their recruiting is still so crap, with all those high picks it just blows the mind.

Yes compare your post 2002 list to ours, i dont know what everyone is trying to prove with that. I mean you are comparing a list of players that cameron has put together to another team that hasnt acheived anything.

The point is, i dont think this cameron has done anything to be regarded as such a great recruiter. Simply as that. If you want to prove me wrong, compare your list to that of geelongs or west coasts, and then show me the flag that he won for you as well. Im not trying to stir you all up. But why is this guy so highly regarded?

Agree, he should have a great year at the Lions. At the dees he would get tagged every 2nd week, with the lions midfield he will run riot. Doubt he will ever get a tag and will recieve the opps 3rd best mid.

Clearly you're life is very fulfilling and rewarding by coming to this forum and offering nothing but willing to slag off people for posting anything you in your infinite(tile) wisdom sees fit.

I'm still not sold. I agree with Goffa that we have been fantastic at late and rookie drafts at the top end I still stand by it, we've underachieved.
Maybe my heading was inflammatory and should have read "M's Drafting... Less Than Average.."

With the players he's drafted we have done nothing... One Grand Final appearance is not satisfactory and we should not be comfortable with it. I truly hope the last 3/4 years of draft picks can get us across the line with that flag and we can stick it up the pies and the dons and carltons and tigers and everyone else. Not sure we will with these players.
We're still short a forward or two CHF and FF, Midfield seem very one paced, not explosiveness besides Davey, and backline well.. when N Carroll who is a great trier is your no 1 FB week in week out no need to say more.

The point of that list is to show what Craig Cameron has done in the last 5 draft compared to what your recruiters have done, now I don't think he is the best in the league but I think he has a solid record and is improving every year.

As for the flag he won it, despite being with us for 10 years I think his recruiters flag is still to come, which is why I'm disappointed he left because the glory comes 5 years after the recruiters have done their best work. He made good selections in 97, 98, and 99 but he wasn't building a premiership list. It was a time where we went from last to the finals then back down and took solid picks in 99 before making a grand final. Chris Lamb will go down as a mistake but most Melbourne supporters believe he could play and he wasn't given the right opportunities. Scott Thompson was a great pick in 2000 and we got the best we could from him when he went home. 2001 he made mistakes, Craig Ellis, Luke Molan, Aaron Rogers and Nick Smith the year after, but Ellis, Molan and Smith all had bad injuries and I don't have a clue what happened to Rogers, but Cameron learnt to go for talent over height, hopefully one day he can pick better talls because it is a weakness of his. That said he got stars in 2002 in Bell and Rivers and after a poor 2003 Daniher demanded harder and tougher players, and since then Cameron has delivered the goods, and has made a group that Dean Bailey will focus on winning the flag with.
