Was watching HGTV at the weekend here in the States (in the process of buying a home, so thought I'd get a look in)... they had some Househunters International show and a couple, an Aussie bloke/Canadian girl, were set to find and purchase a home at the Aussie's hometown in Melbourne.

Having lived in Melbourne for many years, thought I'd look on with some interest... the three candidate suburbs chosen were... drum roll

Croydon
Ferntree Gully
Mooroolbark

 was my initial reaction, but then I began to wonder why that area of Melbourne really gets a bad rep.... some decent homes there and at the foot of the Dandenongs....used to live in Croydon as a lad, didn't mind it... sure, not my favourite part of Melbourne, but is the area really a bogan wasteland filled with junkies as a lot of people make it out?

I think Croydon and Mooroolbark have nicer pockets than Ferntree Gully. I lived in Mooroolbark for a long time. It's a fair way out from the city but it's not that bad. Like most suburbs, it has it's good spots and it's bad spots. Around the station and the older part of Mooroolbark is a bit run down but the area up on the hill towards Chirnside Park is fairly nice.

As you said, it's a short drive up the Dandenongs or out to the Yarra Valley. You can drive 10 minutes down around Wonga Park and feel like you're in the country (which I suppose you are) and fish in the Yarra where it is relatively clean. It's the outer suburbs, but it's not the worst place to have a family. Lots of big blocks at cheaper prices.

When I think of the outer eastern suburbs I think of Glen Waverley (and a few further down springvale road) and honestly they're horrible. Each to their own but they're hell on earth to me - white, suburban, hell. I would choose to live in a lebanese ghetto in the outer western suburbs (i think) over Ramsay street.

I have friends who grew up around there and they're always telling me how close it is to the city - (no it's not!)

Actually it's Pin Oak Court ;)

I grew up in Boronia, and as I am currently in the US I was lucky enough to catch this episode. It was pretty funny to see the couple standing at the top of the Dandenongs talking about whether they'd buy in Croydon, FTG and Mooroolbark...

I think the outer east does get a bad rap, in much the same way the Western suburbs does. But it is certainly true that there are areas you'd want to avoid. As a Boronia-ite I never really quite felt comfortable in the area right around the railroad tracks, but there are also some streets set away from the main drag which had some very nice, hilly areas with big houses. So it's a mixed bag really.

Living in Wantirna, I see the logic behind the suburbs mentioned getting a bad rap, but they are usually pretty safe and have some decent houses out their. Or though definitely agree with the above about Boronia rail station one of if not the worst going round. Plus everything out this way is pretty close to everything barring the city which is only 40 mins any way.

LOL. Step out of your inner city mansion some time and visit the real world.

Who cares how far away a suburb is from the city anyway, who the hell goes to the city besides Asian tourists and business men with rods stuck up their arse?

Very ignorant comment. A good run on the Freeway gets you into the city in less than 20 mins. i doubt you could get from Some inner suburban suburbs to the city in that time.
White? are you saying Glen Waverley is full of people of european descent? its actually got quite a prominant Chinese community.
No idea pal

Glen Waverley, white suburb... lol

Yeah, it's extremely white except for all the Asian shops and Asian people who populate the area. God if you hate whitey Glen Waverley, you'll despise Springvale & Box Hill.

Ignorance like yours Nicky deserves to live in a shitty lebo ghetto.

Don't go to the footy? I'd suggest you would need as many supporters there as possible...

I live in the Outer East
generally I think it's decent area to live in.
In my eyes theres some very nice areas which people don't know about.
Even some of the better suburbs have it's bad areas anyways.

The only thing I'd avoid this way would be the train stations.

I would have said Glen Waverley & down Springvale Road is full of Asians rather than "whites". Have played ammo football against Hailebury for years & whenever you drive down Springvale Road, it's sport the Anglo Saxon time.

Glen Waverley is rather dull but as far as suburban hell it has nothing on the likes of Ballarat, Geelong & outer Melbourne suburbs such as Tullamarine, Keilor & Lilydale which are all peasantvilles.

Mooroolbark has been developing steadily for 10 years now and they have really cleaned up the bad are of it around the train station. you dont really get the gangs or idiotic kids as much anymore like you do with Croydon.

the area heading towards Chirnside Park is very nice and would be a great area to live. i always like that near lilydale you can find some secluded areas to live in if you wish.

The outer East is nice, sure there are some rough bits, usually near Train Lines.

The positives are you are close to the hills and the Yarra valley, and if you like your local footy the EFL is a good high standard comp.
