A couple of weeks ago I was out to dinner at my local pub, which was recently been extensively renovated. I come across something on the menu, which I found interesting / unusual.

If ordering an entre as a main meal, the pub will slug you a $6.50 surcharge (for what I don't know), additionally if you order a pizza to share, you will be charged an additional $6.50 for each person sharing, i.e if two of you share a pizza you will be charged an additional $13 on top of the purchase price of the pizza. For further information, if you eat from the pub menu in the beer garden no such surcharges exist.

Has anyone come across similar surcharges at pubs / restaurant?

I'd imagine it's to discourage people using the eating tables to sink piss. If you get four blokes in there all sharing one pizza, the kitchen obviously isn't going to make as much $$ as if there were four blokes in there all ordering meals.

They probably found the dining area was filled with patrons who were drinking and just ordering a snack at their table which I assume would mean the pub was missing out on business from patrons who wanted a proper meal (i.e specifically at the pub for dinner).

Just encourages people who are at the pub for a drink (and maybe a snack) to stay in the beer garden.

Terrible for people who want to buy an entre to share (I do this a lot) or a pizza to share (I do this a lot)...I'm sure if you asked they would waive the surcharge...otherwise I would never eat there...

I can understand their motivation for this, but what a convoluted way of addressing the issue. They would be better off just eliminating the entree option I would have thought. Not very customer-friendly - they need to come up with a positive way to encourage people to order food, maybe like a free beer with main meal option or something.

Back in the day my favourite Thai restaurant did a version of this, but it was okay. They had very good food, large servings and low prices. They were always packed out and turning people away and did two dinner sessions each night. You could easily share a main between two people.

At the top of the menu it clearly stated - $10 minimum per person. (May have been 15 not sure). But the fact that they were up front about it, and the amount was reasonable, I think made it a reasonable thing to do.

I think I know who devised that sales strategy

This is the menu

What's concerning is that it's a MINIMUM $6.50 charge if you want an entree as a main - meaning they could effectively charge whatever they want if you want an entree as a main.

Also, those pizza's are ridiculously overpriced - and that's before the surcharge ($20.50 for a hawaiian pizza ). Assuming those are large pizzas, they would be making a killing on the surcharge as the majority of people ordering large pizzas would be sharing them. I seriously can't see 2 people forking out $33.50 for a hawaiian pizza between them at a pub.

At the end of the day - that menu is quite pricey for pub food.

**** eating there, those prices are insane. Had the best pizza I've ever had the other day at a pub in Townsville, $14, 11 inch, wood fired, was awesome.
