Michael Johnson recognised for community work

Michael Johnson’s outstanding community and charity work throughout 2007 saw him finish equal runner up in the AFL Community Leadership Award.
Michael, a Player Ambassador for club aligned charity Redkite, was nominated for the coveted award by Fremantle CEO Cameron Schwab with the strong support of Redkite’s WA Regional Council President Michael Atkins.
For claiming equal runner-up honours, Michael has been rewarded with $2,000 to be donated to Redkite.
“In his four years at Fremantle, while his efforts on the field have been first class, Michael has proved himself a champion off the field,” Mr Schwab said.
“At only 23 years of age, he is an outstanding representative of the club not only with respect to the commitments required as a player but the contribution he makes and continues to make to the community in Western Australia.
“Michael is actively engaged in a number of activities, including working with club-aligned charity Redkite as an Ambassador which helps children through cancer treatment and supports their families,” Mr Schwab said.
Michael took on the role as an Ambassador for Redkite in 2007 and his role is ongoing but his association with the charity started well before his appointment when he took it upon himself to visit some diehard Fremantle supporters undergoing cancer treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital in 2006.
His Ambassadorship sees Michael make regular visits to the children’s oncology ward and has also seen him attend Redkite Karaoke Days on the ward, the Redkite Family Movie Day and he attended the Redkite Corporate Quiz where he delivered the sports round questions.
“In addition to his Ambassador role, he is also involved with the Clontarf Football Academy as a role model to the Indigenous students on an as-needs basis. He also took time out of his busy schedule to be a mentor for the participants in the Fremantle’s ‘Live the Dream’ programme,” Mr Schwab said.
“He is also a fantastic contributor to the club’s Community Development Programme assisting with clinics at junior football clubs and at metropolitan schools.
“Michael is especially proud of his Indigenous heritage and believes that his role in the community is about giving kids confidence in themselves and teaching them how to stay on the right path.”
Mr Atkins said it was with great enthusiasm that they recommended Michael for the award thanks to the work he had done with Redkite throughout 2007.
“We have been honoured to work with Michael this year through our association as one of two charities aligned with Fremantle,” Mr Atkins said.
“Michael has shown us that when a professional sportsman has the heart and the courage to make a difference, they can be the most inspirational role model to our younger generation.
“It was through this goodwill that he met nine year old cancer patient Jesse Trigwell and in March last year, Jesse was named the Number One Junior Ticket Holder of the Fremantle Football Club for the 2007 season.
“Their friendship has continued to grow and Michael has been a strong role model for Jesse.”
Mr Atkins said Jesse’s father Troy says Michael’s support has had a major influence on his son throughout his treatment.
“Troy said that Michael has encouraged Jesse to get back out on the football field and most importantly, remain positive throughout the journey of his illness,” he said.
Mr Atkins said Redkite’s staff were looking forward to continuing their strong relationship with Michael and Fremantle in 2008.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael for his dedication to children with cancer in Western Australia and acknowledge the positive impact he has had on the lives of those in our community most in need of care,” he said.
The Heart Foundation of WA are Fremantle’s other club aligned charity in 2008.
