Left Centre Wing - Michael McLean (Nightcliff, Footscray, Brisbane)
After being de-listed by Footscray at the end of the 1989 season, McLean's career was resurrected 2 years later when he was drafted by Brisbane. He won the Bears club champion award in his debut season with the club, and again in 1993, and went on to play a total of 182 V/AFL games (95 with Footscray, 87 with Brisbane). Blessed with matchless ball handling skills, McLean also excelled in many of the unglamorous facets of the game, and was highly prized by the coaching staff at Brisbane for his on field leadership qualities.
He captained the Indigenous All Stars team in 1995 and in that same year became an assistant coach for Brisbane Lions. He was named in the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century and in 2005 and 2007 coached the Indigenous All Stars. Heading back to the NTFL he has coached both Nightcliff and Southern Districts and in 2009 was the inaugural coach of NT Thunder.
The inaugural list of 25 was comprised of 19 inductees and 6 legends of the game that have contributed over and above to the game.
Among the 6 ‘Legends’ inductees were former Brisbane Lions champion Darryl White, who played 286 games for the Bears and Lions from 1992 to 2005, and Michael McLean, who won the Brisbane Bears' Best and Fairest in 1991 and 1993.

"It just went on and on and on. It was shocking. They were disgraceful, terrible comments," McLean said this week. "It happened most games you played. Back then it was utilised as a tactic. I was getting 10 or 11-year-old kids coming up to me saying, 'What's it like being a coon?', or a boong, or an Abo. It wasn't just their parents or grandparents in the crowd, it was kids. I was used to getting chaperoned off by the local policeman."
"In 1995 we played Essendon at Princes Park," McLean says of that May 7 encounter, just two weeks after Anzac Day. "And Long said to me, 'You better give me a hand. I need your support'. I said, 'Leave it to me'." Long was the flagbearer, but "Magic" became the spokesman for the indigenous cause. He told The Australian that indigenous players would start naming and shaming racist footballers.
