Do you think Mick is getting near the end of his time at Collingwood?

If we have a poor season next year I could see him being moved on.

I went to the semi final against the Saints and I think Mick's coaching or lack of it basically cost us any chance of getting back into the game.

What do others think?

I think now that we have such a young list we can't expect too much in 2009. However I think his last year will be 2010, and if he can't produce a premiership, he'll quit on his own account. It just sounds like the team has a lot of respect for the man, especially going by Harry O's speech.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see Buckley join as an assistant in 2009 or 2010, and eventually take over.

I just think he makes some really odd decisions sometimes regarding match-ups and the general set-up of the team.

i think next year will be his last regardless of results.

I dotn subscribe to mick has a massive ego thing, he was at the dogs for 8 years, west coast for a decade and i reckon he will stay his tenth year and then move on

True. He does seem to put a lot of faith in a player to show resilience and rebound when being beaten, but obviously that doesn't always work out too well. I wouldn't be surprised if we made the top 4 in 2009 though.

if he couldn't produce a premiership in 9 seasons and the club seems like it is not getting anywhere, then he has to be replaced

Mick's been great but i think a new coach would be beneficial to the team.

It frustrates me how Mick only seems to have one plan and is slow to move players who are being beaten. It is the lack of a plan b that i feel cost us a number of games in the season past.

Having said that i was hoping that the club would make the decision to promote Guy McKenna before he left the club. As the situation stands now i am hoping we can lure John Longmire to the club as an assistant with the view to him taking over the senior role in the not too distant future.

10 years is a long time to be a coach without a premiership. I'm not so sure the club would sack him though. If he doesn't win one sometime soon then he should be moved on, 10 years is far to long, especially considering it has been 18 years....

Id expect him to resign, rather than the club sack him. But it has been 8 seasons so far.

Its been 9 seasons mate....... if he doesnt deliver a cup NEXT YEAR he has to go!

10 years is too long without success....... coming 4th, 2nd, 5th, 6th is not success!

Every time he's looked sketchy he's pulled something out, but then the team slumps a little the following year. If we don't make the top four in 2009 I think he'll be gone.
its an optimistic thought to think of a top 4 finish next year. no matter what the outcome of the season his time as coach of collingwood is up.

sorry i got that wrong before it has only been 8 seasons with collingwood mate.

This is a new topic, I don't think MM has been discussed before in the last week or so?

Lol, hope that was sarcastic, enough about MM, he will coach us into September for the 4th year in a row next year, then he, and only he, will make up his mind.

My guess is 2 more years then Bucks or Burnsy takes over, or maybe a dual coaching situation with the 2 of them.

Meh, he's taken us to two grandfinals, a one kick loss in a prelim and a semi final in the last seven years, and blooded plenty of good young talent in the process. We've got a good young team without having to have spend four years down the bottom a la some others. That hardly seems the work of a hack. I'm happy with Mick's efforts and prepared to see how he actually goes next year before I call for his contract not to be extended.

Coaching is so over rated.. Thompson was almost sacked before Geelong suddenly strung 42 out of 45 wins.. did he suddenly become a much better coach?.. Of course not, the Geelong list matured and they did the rest.. it's the talent on the park not the coach

Will 2009 be the first season he has coached at Collingwood without having a further year to run on his contract? I think I'm right in saying that he is only contracted til the end of 2009.

Every other time this has happened he has had an extension on his contract before the end of the second last season. There maybe something in the fact that this extension has not happened this year.

What I'm saying is that 2009, being his 10th season in charge, maybe his last if things do not go well. In saying this, I suspect he may be agreeable after 10 years that all parties can make a decision next year. I suspect he would step aside if the writing was on the wall.

One thing is for sure, if we have a bad season, especially a bad start, then the press will have the knives out.

Yes it was. I started a thread on MM about 2 weeks ago with my arguement or point of view why I think he has done a reasonable job as coach of Collingwood.

I think you're right he will coach us into our 4th finals campaign in a row. Something the pies have not achieved since who knows when, 78,79,80,81. If we don't win the flag I think he may just make the decision to move on. I don't think he will be sacked.

does anyone here think MM has too much faith in the players?? he is supposed to be this fantastic leader of young men but when those young men cost us games of football through pure lack of skill then MM's faith in those players on-field has to end!!

eg leaving Harry O on Fevola for the whole game when we played them early in the year, and leaving Nath Brown on Riewoldt in the first semi.

Yes we know.
I went to all 3 games and the common thing was Fev and had room to lead, we did not have a player standing the way of his line 15m ahead when he was leading for those marks. You can see this at live games. You don't get the full view on TV.
As for Riewoldt, He normally couldn't kick straight from 40m out directly infront that night he just couldn't do anything wrong. Nailing goals from anywhere.

The question is what is alternative? Harry off Fev then what? we didn't have a Clemment who did the job the previous years.

Wakelin should've got a run at Fev an Franklin... everyone says he would have been no good for him, but Wakelin smashed Barry Hall every time and just simply won most of the challenges put before him - he should have been given the big challenges.

I think the decision should be left up to MM.

He is in the middle of his first true re-build at the club. I know it has being 9 years but history shows keeping a coach with a developing young group is a good recipe for success.

I trust that MM would make a realistic decision about where his group is at (he would know better than anyone), and would be humble enough to raise his hand when his time is up.
