Opinion Mick Malthouse

I watched Mick's press conference. What dumbfounded me yesterday was team selection.

1. He spoke of picking a side capable of playing competitive football. 8 changes and losing by 78 points, which could have been a lot more except GWS were shockingly inaccurate in front of goal.
   
2. 'Robotic players' who kick sideways. He picked the side by dropping the kids. So his handpicked more 'senior' players didn't stand up to the pressure. I thought we were in a rebuild rather than sticking with veterans who aren't up to it.

Why did we play Yarran on his own in their defensive 50 when the early rounds of the season showed that by dropping a player back just allows the opposition to easily create a loose man and stream from our forward line to theirs because we lack both pace and endurance?

That's what gets me... He says one thing, but his action almost seems like the opposite.

There have been so many mixed messages its a joke. You would never get Clarkson from Hawthorn talking this dribble that we have to put up with from Malthouse.

The bloke is a peanut and I'm actually starting to realise that maybe it wasnt Collingwood's fault that his departure there was messy.

We all know when the club lets him go he will rubbish the club which shows what type of bloke he is. Never got that from Parkin or Ratts to be honest!!!

It's blatantly obvious. MM is now coaching for a new contract and not for Carlton. All those changes throwing 'senior' players in reeks of trying to snatch a win or 2 to try and keep his job. Whereas normally we'd be pumping games into the kids with potential.

We're pretty much rock bottom. Only way is up. Caretaker coach/new coach ASAP to experiment and play kids the tail end of this season, trade and draft aggressively and focus on 2016. If we keep MM until the end of the year we will just further delay our young kids development.

Hope you don't mind me intruding. Just thought I'd give you an outsiders perspective...

Firstly I understand the pain as my team is rubbish also so my soap box is pretty low.

MM throwing his players under the bus is horrible to watch. Coming out and saying he is "in awe of GWS talent" and he "just doesn't have the man power" stands out to me as shocking leadership. How do the players feel when they hear their coach attempting to save his own skin game after game by shifting blame on their lack of talent? Hardly a battle cry that rallies the troops under your banner is it?
Even though there may be an element of truth to his words.... How do these words inspire his troops to believe again? Mick is paid the big bucks to know better.

The "It's not me it's them" attitude from Mick is poor leadership and wreaks of ego and self protection.... These vain attempts to prolong his career is actually shortening it.
He is past being an effective coach and I think Eddy saw the writing on the wall hence installing the Buckley transition plan.

Carlton has sooo much success pride and individual club spirit in its history..... Plus a huge fan base desperately wanting to believe. (I see this when my kids are the only ones wearing lions gurneys at Auskick and navy blue jumpers are everywhere).
In my humble opinion it's time to kick out MM and look back to find your way forward.

The senior core have been supportive of Mick, and I am sure behind closed doors he will tell the 'star' players he wasn't talking about them. Murphy coming out and saying a couple of weeks ago that players need to work out whether they want to be here or not, suggested it is the fault of others.

However if he supports them privately and blames then publicly to save his job, that support will erode quickly. As it is they don't play as though they support the game plan and the coach .... pretty soon they won't talk that way either.

The others are pampered and mentally weak and self serving but the latter applies to the coach as well.

The thing about sacking coaches is once they are gone you can only speculate about what they might have done in the future. If they stay you can see whether you made an astute call or extended your misery. That's why the industry is geared towards sacking. A new guy comes in and fails, but so would the old guy (See the demonisation of Ratten to defend Malthouse). A new guys comes in and succeeds ... nyah nyah nyah, told you so.

So Malthouse staying and losing = waste of more years.
Malthouse staying and winning = strong, resolute and correct call.
New coach losing = nil all draw, Malthouse wasn't getting it done either.
New coach winning = We ****ing knew it! Malthouse was the problem.

You can see why coach sacking is the line of least resistance.

After his years of being trained by the coaches over in the states, I think that he has a few ideas on how to get the best out of misfiring forwards.

How was Cas kicking for goals and filed kicks yesterday??

I had this conversation yesterday at the ground. He asked the question. My thoughtful answer is, simply, i don't know.

Can Mick coach? Undoubtably.

Do we have talent? Yes. Older talent. Judd, Simpson, Walker.
Prime. Murphy, Gibbs. Kreuzer, Yarran, Thomas.
Younger. Menzel, Cripps, Jacksch.

You can easily build and structure a side around this core group.

More need to come in. Some will go out. It's the circle of life.

I don't know where we're at. Well I do, I just don't want to articulate it. I don't think something as easy as a change in coach fixes it.

I would leave Sav Rocca in charge of our forward line to be honest... he has had charge of training Cas for 2 weeks and we have already seen a massive improvement. After his years of being trained by the coaches over in the states, I think that he has a few ideas on how to get the best out of misfiring forwards.

Blatantly obvious he has improved his grip, ball drop and his confidence in 2 weeks, my question is WTF was happening with his development in these areas for the past 4 years or more ???

i can never see the value of sacking a coach mid season, especially when the list and the players arent up to it.
you place even more unrest on the club and will not get us into the finals. unless you hire next seasons coach now, then a care taker coach is useless..
l have never liked the appointment of Mick from day one and just prayed that we did do another Pagan......history will show us that we have.
2 years and 7 weeks into his tenure he really has shown us nothing....except for the first season finals appearance, that wass based on a lot of luck and a list that was not of his making.
the past two drafts he has had influence on who was drafted and traded and he has f**ked that up big time.
its going to take at least 3 to 5 years to recover.
round 23 2015, show him the door, take his keys and change the locks!!

The game plan is horrible. If we were to sign Mick up I would want to see him able to rally the team to run and approach games with a different style. I can't see that happening, and the players confidence is suffering due to being blamed for poor structures giving no results. I think Mick needs to go unfortunately.

I was standing on the wing at the Pies game and speaking with a Pies flog supporter. He said that Bucks brought the press with him (after studying it in the states) when he arrived and that Mick was happy taking credit (exactly what you'd expect this supporter flog to say). The issue is, I can't see any nous that tells me Mick still has it
Another thing this Pies fan said he heard was that Rossy Lyon would be heading our way if Freo didn't win it this year... I know that's been discussed before, seems farfetched. Still, in my blind optimism, it could be the reason there's been no move on Mick.

Things definitely haven't improved since he arrived. The players who have chosen to leave during his tenure are definitely better than those who have come to join him. That may be all to do with money and nothing to do with the coach though so can't blame him for that.

The game plan has gone from us being one of the more exciting teams to watch with run and, to stand still, look for targets behind and to your side, then if you manage to keep the ball for a few touches (which is rare) boot it to the boundary. This is Malthouse's responsibility so he is to blame here.

Dropping Nick Graham after playing him for a quarter and him being better than any of our senior players has pissed me off so much. Turned me right off him. Someone new next year, the remainder of this year will depend on who we can get.

What does our great & illustrious leader do .......... rewards them time & time again for mediocrity, no-one from the 'select' group gets dropped regardless of how badly they play.

Keeping Malthouse for the rest of the year will do more damage. We may as well salvage what little confidence the players have left, otherwise the recovery time will be longer.

The Board need to make the call this week, put a caretaker coach in the role and look for the best coach to take our club forward.

No other options.

If the Board doesn't make the tough call, I question whether they are right for the club as well.

sounds a lot like what may have caused the downfall of ratten will be the same thing that brings mick undone... playing favorites. not hard to imagine the type of footy it might create and what it does to the team.

I am firmly placed in option 3 but can understand why that is not the case for many others. In fact as much as I would like Mick to stay as head coach for a number of years to come, I have, however, already resigned myself to the ever increasing likelihood that we will be parting ways with him at the end of this season, if not sooner.

As a long time member and supporter all I want is some clarity from the club. None of this rubbish that we'll wait the year out and evaluate at that time. You should not have to wait the year out to know whether or not Mick is the right man to coach the club in 2016 and beyond.

There is no room for half measures here. You either think he's the man for the job or you don't. If you do, end the speculation now, anoint him as the man to take us through this rebuild and sign him up on a long term contract.

If you don't, take a hard stance and act now. Part ways with him now, give the head coaching responsibilities to one of our assistants and begin what I would hope is (but have little confidence in) an extensive and thorough search for the next head coach of the Carlton Football Club.

Frankly my confidence in the club is right now at an all time low and it continues to plummet by the week. In fact there is probably only one person at the club right now who I trust knows what they are doing and that man is Mick Malthouse. He's built sides from scratch before and I have confidence he can do it again. He knows what it takes to get to the top of the tree and that simply cannot be said for most others at the club.

We are unfortunately a laughing stock of the competition and unless we take actions things will get much worse before they begin to improve.

Many say the buck stops with the coach but in my view that is taking an easy way out. Just as the best full forwards of all time would be rendered completely ineffective in our forward line at the moment (yes, possibly a reflection upon Malthouse), I don't believe any head coach could be a success at the club as it stands. A complete overhaul is required from top to bottom and if that includes the senior coach, so be it, but it sure as hell doesn't end with him.
