Still considered one of the best ever exponents of intelligent ruck work guile. Sammy Newman, for instance, and Simon Madden both place the big fella right up there as one of the truly tough and smart ruckmen to have played the game. His now unfashionable expansive girth perhaps belies what a key ingredient he was to our 70's era of domination.

T'toes
Yeah, Mick is very underrated; he was a gun. And he has probably the most iconic nickname in VFL/AFL history.

PS - Bring back the "T'toes" sign-off 👍

Yeah they did, that was some of the video from it.
Gee that was a fantastic tribute night. So much respect in the room.
One of my great mates, a north man obviously, was working for the abc at the time and interviewed Barrassi, Greig, Goodingham and Joseph.
I remember having a slash next to RJ and thanking him for his enormous contribution to our club!
The Keith Greig interview was cut short as some formal events needed to take place. Afterwards he actively sort us out to complete it. It’s the only time in my adult life that I felt like a wide eyed child!
Kekka as MC was hilarious too.
It was a tremendous tribute to our first premiership ruckman who went to soon.
But it was great to see so many of the old guard come up to Brissy to pay tribute to the great man and extend their respect to his family.

A LEGEND

I recall an article in the Age written by Tiger Croswell, maybe 25 or 30 years ago. In it he mentioned an occasional half-time ritual of Barrassi handing out a bottle of Stones or Port to be passed around if it was a stinking cold, wet miserable day.

Brent wrote that when the bottle reached Mick it stopped. Whether he was #20 in the circle or #1.

In my uncommitted years before I settled on a team, My dad was having a beer with John Rantall and his dad in the local pub - and Mopsy was asking me what team I barracked for. He convinced me to support North as he'd just signed up and he promised they'd win a grand final soon.

And by the way, nobody pronounces their family name correctly. Clue - it is not Raan-tal.

Johnny live in Springvale Sth from memory, the Pub wasn't the notorious Springy was it? I grew up across the road in the more gentle 70's suburb of Mulgrave with knackers, Davo, Thommo, Stevo, Bruce etc.

They were all characters back then, because men weren't drilled to be conformist automatons who obeyed the orders of the puritanical mob.

He attended my school fete and bought me a steak sandwich the likes I'd never seen before , said it would keep me going til dinner . I didn't eat for a week.

He was very popular on the world of sport and often won TNT play of the day, that usually consisted of him kicking a goal after plowing through three opponents.

There is footage against the Bues where we dribble a ball for a goal and he holds back two defenders who seem to be paralyzed. Funny stuff and I wish I could find that.
