Malthouse a Bulldog once more

Collingwood coach Michael Malthouse is back at the Whitten Oval, albeit temporarily, as a signed up member of the Western Bulldogs.

Malthouse is the fourth longest-serving coach of the club and was at Footscray from 1984 to 1989. He became a member of the club on Wednesday as part of a campaign by the Bulldogs to capture lapsed members and those who have never signed up.

He was presented with his ticket by his full-forward of the time, Simon Beasley.

"The Western Bulldogs are proud of the fact that Michael's formative years as a coach began here at the Whitten Oval and we are particularly delighted that he has chosen to be a part of our "New Recruits" campaign by signing up as a 2003 Western Bulldogs member," said club chief executive, Campbell Rose.

I saw Malthouse at the Team of the Century function last year and he was having a ball.
Footscray gave him his coaching opportunity at the age of 30 and he has never looked back.
Thanks Mick, don't forget to renew in 2004.

Thanks micky.
Now remember we need you next year and the year after that and the year after that and....................:D

Well done to Mick saw it on channel 10 durring the sports report god to see he is a signed up member to the club that started his coaching career.

I was proud to see Mick sign up for the Doggies.
Great to see people remembering and recognising their roots.

May the Doggies surge forward off-field and on. (Except against my lot ;))

Cheers Nick

It's funny, for some reason i've always had a disliking to Mick, but never knew why, then when he signed up as a member, all of a sudden i just had so much more respect for him.

Collingwood is officially my second team.

Interesting that Malthouse applied for the Wangaratta Rovers and Central District jobs and missed out before Footscray taking a chance and giving him the opportunity to coach.
He has not looked back.

Good on him, a very kind gesture and one which has earned him even more respect from me. Not very often these days in AFL that we see a bit of respect for grass roots etc.

Add this action to Eddie's support last year and The Pies are no longer the team I love to hate. Richmond / Essendon should be able to fit the bill :D

I remember back at the old western oval days as a 7-9yo I used to boo Micky cause everyone else near me did. I hated him but had no idea why.

Always thought Micky did very well with the limited personel talent wise he had at the club. No problems in defence(miserly) those days but no CHF and an aging Beasley at FF. Know some people didn't like him towards the end of his rein and I'm not sure why. Accepted in 89, it was time for him to go as he could do no more with us.

Interesting he mentioned that he thinks that we would have won 85 preliminary if is wasn't for a undisciplined act by a certain player. Easy of guess of Brad Hardie as he kept Matthews quiet until the last when he kicked 3 goals. Who knows more?

I wondered the same thing as I can't remember any specific undisciplined acts.

The thing about '85 that has always depressed me is that if we had a CHF and another decent mid-fielder we would have won that premiership.

Kelvin Templeton and Ted Whitten were 28 y.o's.

With the risk of depressing everybody, if we had a CHB in 1997/1998 we might have won one then as well.

there were 2 stupid mistakes that cost us goals that I can recall

Steve McPherson getting caught holding the ball across half back. He had an age to get rid of it but seemed content to stoll in a crab like fashion til he got caught.

The other was Rick Kennedy foolishly smashing John Kennedy (I think) in the back of the head about 10m out directly in front. There was no need for it.

Memories are trickling back, Did Kennedy step on Dunstall's back in that game?

If you have a video of the game watch Steve McPherson. Coming up towards time on of the last quarter as we are surging into attack he gives away a stupid free kick across the centre, then to compound things he gives away a 15 metre penalty out of frustration. The ball pings straight to Mathews for a goal.

Robert Groenewagen also has a shot from the boundary line halfway through the last quarter when Edmond was in the goal square by himself screaming for the ball.
