Coming soon from Microsoft - http://www.bing.com
Its not a search engine - its a "decision engine".

For such an important product, they couldn't have chosen a worse name. Its up their with Bob and Zune.

All hype no substance, or a worthy challenger?

Surely there is an better more easily identifiable name than 'Bing'

Terrible choice.

Nahh I like it... short and easy to remember and easy to type.

Also "BING" a US expression for when someone is guessing at something and they get it right. BING = On The Money = Correct... etc.

I still remember when Google was taking over everything and how odd the name "google" was at the time.:D

I once said that Microsoft's arrogance will one day see them get into the business of making cars (and think they can dominate that market).

Heck, why don't they make spaceships?

Microsoft are like any company.
No they're not due to their size, market share, marketing and tactics.

They have a goal to at least compete in areas they have a foothold in. For their shareholders they feel they have to do their best to kill the competition.
By using dodgy practices.

At least in this case they have the have to initially compete in an client software independant environment.

maybe one day microsoft will realise that they can't rule in every area they want to

End users will make that decision. In the meantime they'll wait for other companies to make new technology and create new markets, then they come in and add some eye candy and tell everyone how much better it is.

From what I've seen of Bing, this is what they've done. Search is about to become complex.

Think you are living in the past a little here. That is very much old Microsoft; they have changed a hell of a lot since then.

Not saying they are perfect or anything but they have made massive changes to the way they do business.

Tell that to VMware :D

Microsoft aren't that as bad as people tend to make out though.

Anyone else think of Brett Lee when they heard this?

One thing that is good in the search is the 'video preview' when you are looking for videos. Hover over it and it will start playing for you.

i like the image search, 1,000 images per page
i also like how you scroll over the video on a search and it starts playing

exactly the sort of feature i hate to see. it's eye candy and doesn't actually add anything to the software

and while we (in australia) live in a world of download limits i can see many people getting very frustrated with it

Disagree; think the video search is really good. It’s easy not to scroll over the videos if you don’t want and they are small anyway. But each to their own.

Bing is not too bad at all. Good to see some competition for Google. I think the big G have been a bit lazy of late with search, this should ensure that they don’t drop the ball.

I just went to the image search, typed in **** and hit enter. There are 1000 different images on the one screen... It's already overtaken google IMO.

Apparently the video search is proving extremely popular for the same reason.

Bing got 16% of the market in its first week, beating Yahoo.

Every 1% represents a billion dollars profit per year.
