What are the chances of us participating in the mid season draft?

I think we should be looking at it if we can, though i am unsure if we have the option to...do you need a spare draft pick handy? Needless to say, we need a midfielder, one that can perform under a heap of pressure (unlike many of our current mids).

If we do have a dip, who do you guys rekon we should look at? I have always thought Haiden Schloithe has been terrible unlucky not to get an AFL gig. He has performed year after year for Souths and if we do choose a mid season draft pick, we will need a ready made player.

Hayden schloithe seems the obvious one - but having said that weve needed mids for years and the eagles website were talking about him in 2017 - why have we not pulled the trigger?

whats the problem with this guy?

thinking its a question around his disposal efficiency. In saying that, thats what the recruiters were saying when we let Tim Kelly slip by in a couple of drafts and we all know how that worked for us :P

The problem with taking a WAFL player like Schloithe or Sam Fisher is that the rules will prevent them from playing for the Beagles.
Which would be a problem if our midfield wasnt all injured.

Not sure if it’s the same rule for Peel actually. It was one of the conditions of us getting a stand-alone team

Well then its pointless to even go to the mid season draft.

IF we added Garlett to pick him then that is another pointless exercise as he isn't even that good.

We could pick up a SANFL or VFL player. Like a Riley Knight, or even that Partington guy that’s playing well at Glenelg.

Or we could use it to bank a top-age junior we’ve had our eye on, rather than wait until the end of the year and risk someone else pick him up.

That is a bit 4D chess, but I wouldn't be against the idea if our list was healthy. We've been gutted by injury. If we want to be competitive in 2021 I think we must go the short sighted route and grab a plug and play mid. After all, if they can contribute in 2021 then they should contribute beyond that. Shuey's in the twilight zone and needs to consider playing another position as many stars have before him.

<<<Jack Avery looms as a potential pick-up in the National Draft out of the WAFL Colts. The 19-year-old intercepting defender has transitioned into a big-bodied contested midfield role this season and dominated the competition. He could settle into a third-tall defender, but could also make an Elliot Yeo-like transition into the midfield. Sandover Medallist Haiden Schloithe would provide immediate relief to a midfield brigade suffering a litany of injuries.

A former AFL-listed player who the Eagles could play now is Blake Schlensog – previously on Geelong’s rookie list. He has been a rock for South Fremantle in the WAFL, and has beefed up to now tip the scale at 99kg. His disposal has dramatically improved, and he is flying for his marks, averaging nearly eight per game. Schlensog could cover the injury of Jeremy McGovern over the next six weeks.>>>

Tall defender with midfield potential you say.

Would love to know the answer to that^^
1 year contract, lock im in Eddy!!

I haven't seen poor disposal from Schloithe. He can find leading forwards, and score himself when the chance presents. Mature body, hard at it, used to playing in strong sides (post-Dockers, obviously), gets the job done week after week. Seems like exactly the sort of bloke you'd pick up as plug-and-play on a short contract.

So, of course, I'd be astounded if we picked him, or indeed any of the other ready-made options. We'll probably pick nobody at all, and the next most likely option is some random project player who would be available in late rounds of the draft anyway.

I will figuratively burn the place down if we draft another tall. That's the last thing we need.

Pretty sure Kelly was responsible for Schlensog crossing to Souths after he got delisted by Geelong. If we picked him up, we may as well just put Kelly in charge of our recruiting department :D

10. Haiden Schloithe
Averaging 32 disposals and kicking 11 goals from his five WAFL games so far, Schloithe is arguably the premier state-leaguer and is the ultimate choice for any club looking to instantly improve their midfield and front half. Schloithe has been a dominant player so far this season and has been a star for several years, previously winning the Sandover Medal ahead of then teammate Tim Kelly who went on to get drafted the same year. There are 'accumulators' in the state leagues (who might not damage teams with their touches), and then there is Schloithe, who has good speed and is a classy and damaging ball user who finishes around goal and hits damaging targets. With Schloithe's capacity to hurt rival teams through the midfield and close to goal, he is good enough to slot straight into any club's best 22. The component that will have some clubs pausing is his age with Schloithe turning 28 in June which may see his chances limited to clubs with shorter time horizons.

Being 28 and having a short time horizon is fine. We have a window that is slightly ajar in the short term, we need to do everything to maximise that

I think we could do with another KPD back-up unless we are happy to run with HEdwards who doesn’t have the bulk yet, or switch Oscar back there which takes away from the forward line. Having said that it’s probably not our area of greatest need - if we still think we are contending, which has been thrown into considerable doubt the last two weeks, then someone like Schloithe or Riley Knight would be the go, if we think that bird has flown, then get a young guy on the cheap.
Doing nothing and having Venables watching for the rest of the year does not appeal.

So you reckon Simmo will back the boys in?

Wouldn't it take said recruit years to learn our system anyway?

Won’t be Jack Avery as he hasn’t nominated for the mid season draft.

Also a great pity Greg Clark didn’t nominate either .

Of those who nominated at where I think we will pick IF we do participate in the draft, my first preference would be : Josh Green followed by Riley Knight ( I am assuming Oliver Davis is taken by the Crows).

Now as much as many on here will melt and revolt it we take a tall, I won’t be surprised if we do - particularly at KPD and given that we don’t need him to play immediately then a project would be a option- See: Blake Schensog would fit that bill nicely.
He is already located in Perth and you can bet we will have talked with Tim Kelly about him, given that Kelly knew him at Gellong and suggested he head West and play with South Fremantle after Geelong cut him.

Now before any shoot me for this suggestion hear me out:

By taking a developmental KPD now that would allow us with our first three National Draft picks at seasons end - currently 12, 31, 33.
To make an all out midfield blitz with three midfielders.

Matt Johnson, Kade Dittmar , Corey Warner ...... thank you very much 😃

The startegy isn’t as silly as it sounds.

With O’Brien expect the unexpected.
