The media is turning it into a bit of a circus now. I am sick of hearing about it every day for the last 4 weeks. If the person was a man or elderly or dark skinned it would have been over 2 weeks ago.

As harsh has Burek's post was, the basic idea of what he and Chad said is probably right.

The press need to stop telling people who to mourn.

Or maybe the people should be smart enough to make their own decisions...

There was a story in yesterday Hun that had a list of a lot of Aussies missing overseas.How come the media didn't do a 2-3 week campaign to find them ?

But I don't see why that should mean people get a free shot at this girl and her family, sullying her name for no reason at all.

The sensationalism of the media (see constant references to her as just 'Britt') means this won't go away for a while, but in reality she's no more important than the other 45 people who are missing overseas.

Coroner angers Lapthorne family
November 26, 2008

THE body of backpacker Britt Lapthorne has been released to her family after the Victorian state coroner told them she might not be able find the cause of her death in Croatia.

Coroner Jennifer Coate today said a post-mortem examination of Ms Lapthorne's body was completed yesterday but she would not receive the pathologist's written report for another two to three weeks.

"The family has been informed that it might not be possible to find a medical cause of death in the circumstances,'' Judge Coate said.

The Lapthorne family, however, was angry the coroner had not consulted them before issuing the statement to the media today.

"We're just horrified and it's really distressed us like you could not believe,'' Britt's father Dale Lapthorne said.

"I'm just flabbergasted with the coroner.

"Up to yesterday it had been agreed a release would be done in consultation with the family and then the coroner releases this without consulting us.''

I read that article, but nowhere have I read that the body is actually Britt..Have I missed the announcement? because that article doesn't actually say so..
