^ Regarding Alan James (Mick) Ryan I have had it confirmed that his death was mentioned in the 1980 Annual Report for Collingwood (no date was given). So it seems very likely he died in 1980, but was it in Victoria or elsewhere!

Genealogy SA has newspaper death notices for Allan James Ryan in 1977:

I'm not able to view them, unfortunately.

If his death was mentioned in the 1980 Annual Report, then assuming it's an end of season report, I'd bet that this is him: 3 June 1911 - 26 Oct 1980, buried in Adelaide.

Fantastic work! I think that would have to be him. It has the name exactly right, and 1911 would fit well enough for his year of birth.

1977 Ryan is listed here as dying on 15 Oct, but there is no matching record on the cemetery website. Even searched all of the variations on spelling, James or Allan as the surname etc, nothing.

Alan James Ryan (1911-1980, and dying in Adelaide) looks like a perfect fit to me. That 1980 Annual Report definitely suggested he died in 1980.

What month was the report released?

(thinking if it was after October)

I'm delighted to say that after the AFL chaps were presented (via Collingwood FC) with a good deal of information on Alan James 'Mick' Ryan (including the above crucial evidence, and the fact that his death was mentioned in the 1980 Annual Report) that they have agreed to make changes to their records regarding his DOB and DOD (this is from a Steve Rodgers email):

The email doesn't reveal the DOD for this player, unfortunately. An Alan John Carr died in 2008, but his DOB was 02.10.1939. More investigation needed!
Edit: His Wiki page has him being recruited from Mentone, and there was an Alan Russell Carr living in that suburb from (at least) 1963 to 1997 when he died.
Another Edit!: This was in the Rd. 4 Football Record:-

It should be very likely then that this was him:

This chap should now be known as Allan Trusler.

^ It says on Alan Ryan's Demonwiki page:

The age discrepancy is pretty much accounted for with the revelation that the player was born in 1911, not 1909. There were a couple of articles about his being injured in 1933 where it called him Alan Ryan (and said he was 21 - one of them I've included in a post on the previous page). Also it had him living at Raleigh St. Thornbury, and that's where Alan James Ryan lived until at least 1954. Most likely the paper got it wrong in saying the Melbourne player in this practice game was from Sale:
1649833968469.png
This refers to the same game:
1649834133464.png
On that Demonwiki page you also have "A rare backman of his era who could kick with both feet". I suspect there was only the one Ryan playing for Melbourne in that practice game, and that would have been Alan.

I'm just wanting to revisit this one:

There's still no known DOD for Bob Burns, who played 2 games for Collingwood in 1904. He headed west in 1905:
1650012037204.png
He played, coached and umpired there.
1650012125592.png
He then opted for a career change, and headed overseas:
1650012242163.png
This will be him with a wife and child a few years later:
1650012396462.png
Perhaps he married soon after going to Scotland?
1650012279156.png

1650012452065.png
So in 1946 he's practicing as a doctor in Monmouthshire, Wales.

This will be his marriage (in WA):

I know bugger all about searching for UK BDM's, but this one would fit nicely!:
1650016895507.png
He's the right age (born 1884), and from Wikipedia:

It doesn't look like I can bring up UK stuff on Ancestry, so if anyone can and wants to look into this further, please do!! Knowing he was still working as a doctor in Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1946 we should be able to find him from there.

I'll see if he's on the 1939 census thingy.

Okay, thanks a lot for that. The top one is definitely our man, as Robert Edward Burns was a medical practitioner and born June 3 1884, but is this for a specific part of Wales (Bedwellty in particular would be handy!), or does it cover a much wider area?

It's probably something obvious, but I can't figure out what this column represents!:

According to Ancestry, it's marital status.

D = divorced.
S = single.
M = married.

BONUS: W = widow.

Okay, that makes sense. I wonder if this was him getting married a second time? Given his WA connection it has to be rather likely, but if so that one didn't end well either:

As for the place name, it's called Abertillery.
Okay, thanks again. They seem to have a few doctors living there!

We do know the doctor was meant to be at Monmouthshire in 1946, so was that him dying in the Bedwellty area in 1949? I'd say it's looking more and more likely.
