Yeah writing him off after one is game is insane. Glad he got his goal, bad miss for his set shot but looked okay around the ground.

Nothing special, but for a first game it was not bad. West will get his chance back in the team, at the moment it’s about who performs well enough to stay in the team.

That miss was a carbon copy of a miss from VFL last week - seems to lean back on his straight kicks and spray them right a bit.

For a first game on a very big stage I thought he showed enough.

I like the way he nudges defenders under the marking contest. Clearly a guy who has played a fair bit of footy and worked on his craft

I don’t think he and West are in each others way. Both should play and Membrey should go

Not opposed to that . As per my point about revolving doors pods didn’t do anything to be dropped, except that maybe West should have been given more chances in the first place

A forward line with West Pods and Buller… not sure they’d want to risk it but why not. Season is all but over.

Yeah I’m really intrigued with the ideal mix once Hayes is back.

I don’t think we can play West, Pods, Buller and McStay together. Just way too tall and slow.

I don’t necessarily view it as risky. Membrey isn’t offering a heap as that third tall on bigger grounds because he’s pretty immobile. I think West has a pretty good connection with Buller too.

Membrey can come in for Marvel games where he is still valuable. But as Pods is 5 years younger than him I’d try and pump games into him to see what value he can have and if he’s worth re-signing, given Elliott will miss a chunk of next season too I imagine

Apologies for my gross misrepresentation. It just seems like 4 years of endless anguishing over his selection.

I seriously cannot believe it's only a season and a half!

Didn’t love all 4 today either though I get that we don’t have many options at the moment.

I think West is also much more mobile than Membrey, who looks like he’s moving in wet cement sometimes

If he can play games like he did in the VFL this week i.e playing up the ground as a down the line option then it’ll go a long way. Just think the 4 that played yesterday can’t play that role well. Membrey can clunk them but he has the habit of running back to the mark with his back turned to the forward 50 before assessing options.

Drives me effing insane. He is such a momentum killer when he marks it outside of scoring range

Pods shouldn't be fighting West for a spot. They are different players but if there is a choice of one its Pods. His forward craft is a different level to West.

To an extent replaced Cox. With Cameron rucking most of the game, we weren’t seeking an out and out ruckman - required to be a better forward than Cox, but proficient in the ruck when necessary. More the talent scout’s shortcoming than his.

Nothing special, but for a first game it was not bad. West will get his chance back in the team, at the moment it’s about who performs well enough to stay in the team.

It was a promising first game, particularly for so little time in the team - got to the ball a fair bit. Needs to sharpen up a bit for the higher standard - needs to go harder when trying to bring it to ground. A couple of times he eased up a bit before taking the ball which he would have gotten away with in VFL but not at the higher intensity. Same with general play ball use - took a bit long and telegraphed too much. But he looked smart and clean.

Medium forwards are really important - we're going to be out of balance without Elliott. We'll either have too many talls or be lacking in terms of contest ahead of the footy.

I'm with ya Dave, by the end of the year Westy should be a fixture up front for us..."Skunk's" done his job for the couple of seasons he had left but the selectors couldn't have forseen all the injuries (to Moore, Steene, Hayes and of course Billy) along with the continued absence of Bobby Hill that have left our front half disjointed and for the most part toothless.

Did you see West's second half last week in the reserves? He was clunking marks for fun and only a case of the yips stopped him from kicking a bag. I reckon he reminds me of Jack Riewoldt, undoubtedly talented but Jack took a good 3-4 years and 50 odd games to really make his stamp on the competition. The job now is to get Westy in and playing regularly (if we still had Billy playing I reckon West would have already been given the nod over Membrey). Our structural pieces need to start being Frampton, Howes (yes Howes over Moore at CHB), Anderson over Long (until Neale gets here next year), McStay and Moore at FF with West as the lead up forward.

So yeah Dave, still got lots to look forward to with Charlie West (and a few of the other young ones).

It’s frustrating for you, imagine how frustrating it would be for our selection committee?

When a senior coach announces at a presser that he’s excited to debut a player who has been in the club for 12 days because it will free up 6 other players on the field to be able to properly play their role …

… that doesn’t reflect too well on the other options, does it?
