I wouldn't mind if we went best available in the first round, Garlett in the 2nd round and Thorpe in the 3rd. It would mean we have picked up 2 prior top 10 KPP with 3rd round picks, a first round quality player who we need to straighten up late in the 2nd, and whatever fell to us in the first. We'd be set for the next couple of years if we could get them all in line.

I'd be pretty happy with Freo's position if we did this.

Well that would mean we picked up two forwards who have injury history and have yet to justify themselves at senior level consistently. Secondly, Garlett won't be drafted by Fremantle. He's going east and has said himself it's probably for the best given there are some bad influences on him in Perth. I'd also suggest that McCarthy or Gardiner would be best available around the 17 mark. As for Thorpe, playing well in the TFL (no disrespect) is like playing well in the WAFL reserves. It's good he's doing well, but for a guy his age and with previous experience in the AFL system, I'd be disappointed if he wasn't playing at a high level in that league.

Gumby is supposed to be over his injuries, so hopefully he comes good. The knock on Thorpe was always his FIGJAM attitude, not his skill level. Apparently he has matured a fair bit, so hopefully he's turned that corner and will become a decent AFL player. I agree that Garlett is probably going east, and he'll probably go early second round as he obviously has talent.

If we don't grab them, I won't be gutted, as they definitely are not risk free propositions.

Being serious here...if Freo draft him they may have to nurse him through pre-season a bit when the temps rise. Being Tasmanian he'll think 22c is a heatwave. I was down there in spring once with my wife who was 6 months pregnant at the time. It was 22c and everywhere she went people would offer her glasses of water and a cold towel and couldn't believe she was walking outside. They were all inside with the aircon on full blast drinking iced tea. We had to put jumpers on to go inside!!!

A mature KPP who's got a strong body and is ready to go, I'd be happy if we took him. He could play either the 3rd or 4th forward role, which benefits Mayne even more, plus lets not forget that if Gumby gets injured, we're right back where we started. He'd be a gigantic upgrade on Taberner, who still needs a few pre seasons in the gym. I'd think we'd probably have to use our second, but if hes there at our third pick, I'd be happy taking him there.

Come one guys, he is 195cm's, he is mobile enough to play in the midfield and he kicked 70+ goals last year while through the midfield as well as forward.

Yes, the TSL is not a great league, but he kicked 6 goals against a combined NEAFL side. On talent alone, he was drafted number 6.

At the very least, when Pav or Gumbleton need a rest he will be a great depth player but I see him being in our best 22 as a 3rd tall. This will allow Mayne to play as a 4th tall.

And best of all, he will be ready next year when we are right in our premiership window.

He'd be ready to go Round One and at the very least, he'd be a good depth player. If Mayne gets the fourth defender, watch him dominate next year. A forward line of Pav/Gumby/Thorp/Mayne/Walters/Ballantyne/Sylvia sounds pretty good.

I see our starting forward line being three of Pav\Gumby\Resting Ruck\Thorp plus Mayne,Balas and Walters.

Then we have Sylvia, Crozier, Fyfe etc to rotate through there. Yeh Mayne will be very dangerous, and due to Thorp's mobility we shouldn't loose too much forward pressure.

If this draft is as shallow as is being rumored, then we should defiantly pick him up in the third round

He was by far the best player in the TSL this year and was playing as a centre nearly the entire year, yet was still 3rd in the league for goals. I know it's not WAFL or VFL standard, but it's not a bush league either

His season was fantastic and showed more than enough to be drafted in my opinion

I see Mitch at the worst is being a good depth player who can play for us when one of our players is injured or needs a rest. Ideally this would be with 2 KPF still in the team including the resting ruck.

At best, I see him as a best 22 forward flank who would provide extra scoring power to our forward line and force the miss matches with himself and Mayne. As he played through the midfield, he should be mobile enough to keep up the forward pressure which is a bonus.

A good depth player in a weak area when you are chasing a premiership is worth pick 58, have a look at what Morton did for Sydney and Thorp is defiantly an upgrade on him.

Story going around that we will look at taking him with pick 37 as Carlton want to take him with pick 39...

Not sure facebook counts as a good source, but I like the sounds of it.

Is it mentioned in any other article?

  • Fremantle are set to pip Carlton in the race for the services of launceston co-captain and former pick 6 in the 2006 national draft, Mitch Thorp.

Fremantle are linked to Thorp at pick 37, which is two picks before Carlton's pick 39.

The blues do not hold a second round selection after trading it in the deal that secured Andrjes Everitt.

Thorp was famously selected before Joel Selwood in the national draft in 2006.

Very happy if we get him. He was an immense talent but shot himself in the foot with his attitude and a questionable work ethic. Given both have seemingly improved out of sight, he could be a massive win for us as a ready-made KPF. 37 is worth it IMO.

58 or not at all for Thorp IMO. Having said that if he's still available at 37 I reckon he'd still be there at 58. If Carlton take McCarthy it's a done deal he'll get to 58. That's the way I read it anyway.

If we don't land McCarthy this guy will be a consolation prize. We obviously don't rate this draft after our first pick.

A key to his massive improvement in attitude the guy in the last two years through his everyday life has by all accounts grown as a person a lot. He's had a child and matured a lot coaching South Launceston to the premiership (and putting together one of the best playing seasons in the leagues short history).

Attitude I doubt will be an issue this time round

Take him with pick 37. That way we have mature age cover for games when Pav & Gumby are both injured / being managed, & we can take a quality mid (like Acres) with our 1st rounder. He's big & mobile, so therefore should suit Ross' game plan.
