Story going around that we will look at taking him with pick 37 as Carlton want to take him with pick 39...

Read the same story in two sources. Why not grab him? This year's talent pool's supposed to be shallow anyway. Be nice if we can scoop McCarthy as a development project and net Thorp as a ready-made guy.

I wonder if Brisbane will get him before our pick. They need a tall and have a heap of picks before our second. A bloke on his last chance is likely to want to stay and repay the faith too.

Is it just me or do they say that the draft depth is going to be shallow almost every year, certainly feels like it.

Next year will be the first one in five or so years not impacted by expansion club preselections, prelistings, mini-draft picks etc.

Bloody shambles all those picks.....absolute bullcrap which the whole competition will pay for in time.

Yet every they're players who are picked late that turn out good and players overlooked completely who prove everyone wrong later.

The question is: Is Mitch Thorp worth pick 37? IMO he isn't but we may just pick him out of desperation. We need both a Kpf and a Kpd this draft but unfortunately for us our picks may not let us achieve this. I can't see the club reaching with our first rounder but after that we may just have to.

Have a look at thorps highlights - he doesn't play like a KP even though he is that size.
One thing we have an abundance of is tall flankers and mids - I'd pass on thorp due to this and prefer to gamble on a giles, Harvey or Conlon type to be a true KP.
If tall mid is what we seek them Marsh will be chosen at 17 ( on the proviso McCarthy not available ) and one of the younger KP projects like those named above at next pick

Why, if you're after a tall mid at 17 - choose Marsh? I'd go with the clearly more highly touted Acres. He's as tall as the rest of our midfield and much more prominent.

Aaahh I see now, I think I read the 2nd half of your post with more weight than necessary. I don't think anybody's seriously suggesting we take Thorpe with 17 anyway though.

Yeh, I know the talk was for Thorp with a second round or later pick but what I was motioning toward was that its likely we'd grab a tall mid early on, hence negating any need for Thorp fullstop. I dunno, I just don't think he quite 'fits' either role from what I've seen and heard. Potential endurance issues to fit our game plan as a runner and lack of one-on-one nous to be a true KP ... Just my opinion

They say that every year. If I were a recruiter I would play the depth down too.

That draft got us De Boer and Pearce in the rookie draft and Walters at 51.

Having said that we also drafted a 21 year old small forward that year by the name of Hayden Ballntyne at pick 21. At the time I was scratching my head. I genuinely thought we could've got him with a much later pick. Even though I was slightly surprised i think we all knew we had a player who would have an impact at AFL level. I can see Mitch Thorp as a very similar prospet tbh. We will never see whether Ballantyne could've been picked at a later selection but we needed a small forward at the time, just like we need a key forward now. Wouldn't be surprised if we did the same again.

sick of hereing its a shallow draft, 2008 and 2001 is all we here about, we have done well late in drafts so timewill tell our method is going ok atm we missed darling our bad 37 is a big pick dont get me wrong I want Thorp we have a good culture now

When I read that, I could not help think of the 6 million dollar man.

We have technology now, we can rebuild him. :D

We're looking more and more like St Kilda and their flag tilt every off-season.

I'm not sure spending a second round pick on a 24 year old discard is really that smart. I mean, the Tassie state league? Clubs put up with people if they're w***ers – some clubs even pay them 10 million dollars. Hawthorn isn't a stupid club and I can't really see the rise between his delisting and his possible pick-up being anything astronomical.

I'm not really sold on this at all. A second round pick should be spent on a young turk. Keep mature agers to the rookie draft.

Thorps ability is another fabrication of BF hype.I would be very surprised that any on here calling for his selection have seen him play.Pick him as a rookie and see what he has got before we shoot our selves in the foot and waste a valuable pick

I just think people are way too confident in Bond and co. Sure they've picked some really unfashionable footballers and they've come good, but they've made some pretty strange choices as well.

The club is seemingly just putting little fixes in the forward line. Anthony, Gumby, Thorp. Who's our great white full forward hope? Taberner? Well the gap between him being a 22-game player and Pav retiring is too much. I have hope and patience for these guys coming through and the ones we've drafted, but I just don't entirely buy it. I hope I'm wrong but I'm just not too optimistic.

This is going to sound like I'm being confrontational but I'm genuinely interested;

How would you handle the KPF issue differently?

Just looked at his highlights, looks like a key position forward to me - quite clearly. Not sure which highlights package you were looking at.
