Just like to be the first to post that was universally the worst matchup of the entire game that at many points put the entire game in jeopardy.

How on earth Mick waited until Mitchell had scored 4 goals to move Maxwell off him is unbelivable. If not for that very silly decision the match would have been put beyond doubt much earlier in the piece.
Plus generally speaking I think that matchup showed up Maxwell as a defender. He's not capable alone he only works well in tandem with others.

Mitch Clark towelled him up. Nick played a very poor game. You won't take marks from behind, he needed to get to the front position against the taller opponent. Should be dropped.

Presti showed how it should be done.

It wasn't a terrible match up it was the ONLY match up. Nick has been playing mostly forward this year but he was still given a job to do and was well beaten, It's going to happen from time to time and such is the life of an AFL defender.

Mitch Clarke is a good player, and at 198cm, he's too big for Maxwell to play on if he's having a good night.

When Maxwell was behind him, Clarke outreached him on the lead, and when Maxwell got in front, Clarke caught him backpedalling.

The real reason for it is that the Lions' midfielders were able to use the ball well enough to make sure the ball got to the right spot to allow Clarke to use his reach advantage.

Players like Clarke are exactly the reason that I advocated drafting a key defender that was 193cm+, because a guy the size of Maxwell or O'Brien isn't going to cut it on a guy like that.

Hopefully going forward, Nathan Brown will have the size to match up on players like Clarke - Reid might be able to switch down back as well, if he's developed like that.

Maxwell should've been playing on Brown or even a Patfull with O'Brien, Goldsack playing on Clark or Brown in retrospect. Just a bad day from Maxwell. He did some important things in the last half when we finally moved him but he needs to learn how to defend the lead.

If you watch the replays all but 1 he did not have much chance Steven Silvangi would of had 4 kicked on him.

But move could of been made earlier a wet paper bag could of played on Brown he was garbage.

Disagree

No-one less than Presti had to play on Brown, then we just needed to find the next best of an undersized brigade to take Clark. Maxwell was canned. I could see O'Brien doing a better job, in fact, Im not sure who he was on, to be honest. I didnt see Goldsack last week, nor much this week in one-on-ones, so I cant comment, but he is a bit green

yeah and bring in who? einstein. against freo next week who have about 4 guys over 6.3 in their forward line.even if clement is right we still have to take him into the game

Sorry, I should except mediocre performances from our players then. I'll remember that advice next time.

Watching him take marks over Maxwell and then Clark somehow kicking goals even though he obviously can't kick was very frustrating

He kicked 6 goals in the twos last week, admittedly with 6 behinds and 2 OOB .. So it's not like he can't find the space between the middle posts. I'd guess he's kicking about as well as Rocca from the set shot at the moment.

Besides having marks taken over him because of a size difference, which as frustrating as that was, what exactly was wrong with Maxwell's game?

I personally was just more weirded out by the fact that it took 4 goals and NUMEROUS marks before a change was made.

As was I, but you can't blame that on Maxwell.

hang on i gave no advice. just asked who you replace him with.and if you drop everyone who has a bad game the joint would need a revolving door fitted to it

Later on into the match MM started playing Maxwell in his more natural position.

A defender who doesnt neccassarily takes an important forward option, but just is a 3rd man up in a contest, provides rebound in deep situations ect.

Hopefully he continues to play this role. Its very similiar to J Clokes in his wonder year, but at least Maxwell is more versatile and can take at least 1 of the forwards, obviously not the best 2-3 though.

Yeah i have never really been impressed with Maxwell, skill one on one defence skills etc. what does impress me however is his courage, work ethic, leaderhsip and just basically doing the things that other players dont like doing (the 1%'s). I believe the collingwood side is alot better with him in it, even if he is individually one of our worst. He plays his best when he gets the third tall, he will always struggle when he is the primary tall defender. Having said that maybe with some exposure to the quality forwards he will improve, who knows! At the end of the day if its not broken, dont fix it.

Well said. Thats what I was trying to say but I dumbed mine down too much. Actually I tried smarting it up with no success!

Ive been calling for Maxwell to be dropped for 2 years but unfortunately he has Mick Malthouse's "Matty Lokan Memorial Free Pass".

He has played key position 2ce in his career from memory - Chris Grant made him look awful last year (when Presti and Wakes were injured) kicking 5 in a losing side and a guy playing what his 7th game had 9 shots at goal in under 3 quarters on him this week in a side that was getting smashed everywhere else. Don't get me started on what Montgomery did to him in the Elimination Final last year either.

Clark didnt out-size him he just continually beat him on the lead which is a huge worry. He is effectively useless up forward and it simply aint good enough that he is a "good bloke" and "has guts". See Jason Cloke.

We would be far better off developing Goldsack as our versatile 4th tall backman who has plenty of dash when Clement comes back into the side.

In - Clement
Out - Maxwell

That is exactly right. Yes Clarke kicked what 4 on him, but other then that he didn't play too badly. He works his arse off every game helping our other backman out and puts in the 1%'s. He was beaten on the lead most of those goals and that's not his game he crashes the packs and is the 3rd man up.

Now i reckon that is crap. Why would you drop someone who hasn't been playing too poorly and is a key player to our side. He would be way infront of Goldsack and Tooves and you want him dropped? Sounds stupid to me.

Because Goldsack and Toovey both need gametime and if we drop both of them we have the same team as the last few years when we haven't been good enough. Maxwell is a great reserve but gets found out time and time again when given a challenge.

Geez I dont know, do we have any decent defenders that are fit and out of the side? I think there is a bloke called SHane Wakelin who could do better
