Got a bit nervous when I saw the article thinking that MM had soured on the Irish sensation but was relieved to find out her was referring to the 33yo ex-crow.

Based on what he is saying pretty much rules out Keating as well.

Looks pretty certain that we will pick up Bryan in the draft, unless the saints pick him up first. If that happens we will probaly pick up scotty meyer from williamstown and hopefully rookie another project younger ruck option like jacobs or griffith.

Hoping we pick up Griffith as a rookie, and Bryan seems a worthy option in the PSD, but there is that risk of interest from St Kilda.

Hey guys im new around here, been browsing the site for a while now but thought i may aswell put in my two bobs worth aswell.

Is it just me or does anyone else think taking an underage prospect who many thought shouldnt have slipped through the draft such as Bird in the PSD is the best option? We cant take him in the rookie draft and the chance at a decent mid is nice....

Then with our rookie picks we pickup 2 ruckman and then if Fraser or Richards break down we will be able to choose the one who is proforming better of the two to elevate automaticly as Dawes will be on the long term injury list....

I just see this as an option to get 2 needs thats all. Bird while not being drafted this year would have to be a highly rated pick next year. We may miss out on someone like Bryan but he still really is a ruckman with potential (Whether or not he is a ruckman is debateable) and there is younger options in the same boat still out there anyway we could grab two and maybe 1 will pan out. They also wont waste a spot on the list unless they are actualy needed

No, we need a mature bodied ruckman like Bryan or Keating or Clarke or Meyer. Even Cam Cloke. Somebody who can play seniors straight away if required. Chances are they will be needed, given Richard's propensity to get injured.

We can then pick up another younger long term ruck prospect in the rookie draft (although Meyer may be a possibility there too). Plus a mid - dont know anything about Bird, but I dont have a problem with his age if he's the best available.

I would imagine Nicholls is earmarked for promotion from the rookie list while Dawes is out of action.

Yeah but my point is if Malthouse doesnt want a Clarke or Keating our only option left in the preseason draft is Bryan who isnt exactly a ruckman, just because hes tall doesnt make him a ruck.... So why not take the underage Bird or someone similar who we could steal this year when he'd likely be a top prospect next year in the National Draft as a top age kid. We cant get him in the rookie draft because you cant rookie bottom age players.

We can get a mature aged big bodied rookie from the WAFL, SANFL or VFL who can step up right away if neeeded and an under 18 one also to develop so we get one for the future and one for now both through the rookie draft while also getting a bottom age tallanted midfielder in the preseason draft.

If bryan is locked in our sights then your right it wont work but its just a matter of whether bryan is all that much better a ruckman then someone we could grab from the VFL or WAFL etc...

Bryan IS a ruckman. That's where he plays. It's as simple as that. Funny how some people are against getting Bryan because just because he's tall doesn't mean he's a ruckman, and others say he isn't tall enough to be a ruckman.

jabso, I haven't seen enough of him to comment but your post can best be answered as follows:

Maybe he isn't a ruckman because he isn't tall enough. He is tall but perhaps not tall enough. Anything under 200cm these days is pushing crap uphill as an effective ruckman. An outstanding athlete may compensate for lack of height. A club on its knees like Carlton will compensate heavily for an outstanding athlete over 195cm.

The guy might be the find of the century but people are celebrating a player we don't have that has proven absolutely nothing at VFL level let alone AFL level as an answer to a problem. Never mid how poorly we have been managed to get to this point it is pie in the sky stuff to take any comfort in this projected solution.

You can call me negative of you like but somewhere along the reality has to come into play.

MM has to decide we need a ruckman and then that this bloke can be an AFL ruckman. Not is but can be. Then MM has to decide that he has a good enough attitude. Then the player has to be available at our pick and than he has to improve a massive amount beyond not being able to get a game in a poor side with a coach desperate to save his arse and project something positive, let alone being delisted from the worst list in the AFL.

Anything is better than nothing. Who Knows he could turn it around!

In some cases yes, but we need a decent ruckman to help out Josh, and be there in case Josh is injured, or even if Guy is injured or out of form.

It's no use drafting any old ruckman because we need someone, they first need to be good and able to be fit enough to be there.

I think MM is effectively saying to Saint Kilda '' the balls in your court''

If the Saints are serious about Clarke then they have first pick , one ahead of Collingwood.

If the Saints pass and Clarke is picked up by someone else , watch for the reverse Mal Michael

I agree with all of that.

On the plus side, the filth did want to keep him, even if it was at a speculative one year contract. Our recruiters have kept a closer eye on him than you or I and shook the tree and he agreed to come to us (or enter the PSD knowing he'll get a favourable deal).

I reckon we'll draft Bryan and rookie Meyer from Willi with our first pick (who incidentally beat Bryan & McLaren in the ruck). With a space or two open for long termers, we could effectively double our "half-competent" ruck division in 15 minutes tomorrow.
