If not Ling it has to be the Moondog, just wached the NAB cup again. The end of he game summed it up. The way the players went to him, how happy he was, how the boys looked up to him. He will kill himself trying to win a ame for Geelong. You can tell he is the type of bloke that would do anything for the boys at the club. Will have a season to remember this year. So much love and respect for the big guy....in the words of the 12th man...get him up here I wanna boof him!!

And why not Gary Ablett Jnr ? he has now had a few years experience in the bigtime and he is 1 of geelongs most important players in the long run aswell ...

We're in a great position now in that when it comes to choosing our next captain we'll be spoilt for choice. In the past there's only ever been 1 or 2 players who were the obvious candidates. Now it's 5, 6 or 7. Off the top of my head I can think of Harley (if he ever gets fit), Corey, Mooney, David Johnson, Gary Ablett, Scarlett, Chapman, Milburn and Ling who would have claims on the captaincy in 2 or 3 years time.

If King starts to make an impact and get back to his form of the early 2000's, he will hold the captaincy for some time and rule out some of the older guys from holding the captaincy.

IF king plays ok, I think the next captain will come from the younger brigade, Lil Gaz, Bartel, Kelly etc. Guys that will lead us for a long period into the future.

Imagine this. A young T.Hawkins steps on to the scene next year. He shows immediate promise, and in three years is the hottest young player in the AFL. King retires with two premiership cups, and hands over the reigns to the games next superstar.

I want to see Moondog have it....he is the new Hamill. Likes hitting blokes almost as much as he likes being hit!!

I agree about mooney being captain in 2007.
After that NAB cup game I had exactly the same sentiments as you - it was as if he was the captain. The players swarmed to him, he lifted when it counted, he showed the most enthusiasm and excitement in relation to the win. He did the post match interview and spoke well about the season proper, game, sydeny game etc.
I really think he has what it takes. Having said that, I think one more year of not being captain is definately in order - everyone needs to be sure he can keep his cool for a whole season and I also think the pressure of being captain could effect his game at this stage of his development.
I along with heaps of other geelong supporters I'm sure, really think Mooney is the face of the footy club and I hope he can captain us to a winning grand final one day - I'd so love to see his face!

Once he gets thru a season 'unscathed', if you know what I mean! ;)

But yeah absolutely love the guy, (i have to, since i put 21 on my new footy jumper!), and think he would make a great leader. Even wanted him to be a vice this season, but i guess that'll have ta wait.

ummm, I am not sure that Milburn will still be around in 2 or 3 years time... And David Johnson?? Sure, he is an improver, but potentianl captain?

Milburn is 27, hasn't had a lot of injuries and doesn't play key position or ruck so could easily play until his early 30s. That said, I think he's more a behind the scenes leader than a captain.

I too was surprised when Bomber mentioned how highly rated DJ was among the group and that he was being considered for a leadership position. Obviously there'd be a few ahead of him in the queue though...

I thought Milburn was 28, going on 29 this April (according to gfc.com.au). Can only see us getting another 2 years out of him.

My mistake, you're right. Still think 3 or 4 years out of him is quite likely given the aforementioned reasons.

If there is a change (which I don't think there will be yet), it should be out of Ling, Scarlett or Chapman. I can't see them ever offering it to Harley, Ablett, Corey or Milburn. David Johnson has to totally solidify his spot in the team, and Mooney needs at least another top year. That's no criticism or discredit of the players, just the way I see it.

You're probably right except for Corey. He's very highly regarded by team mates and coaching staff. He'd be right in the mix.

Yeah fair call, I guess I'm just putting the others ahead of him. He must be the most underrated footballer in the competition, as far as how important he is to his team.

Either way, it's a good position to be in.

Agreed. While Ling is clearly next in line, Corey is among the group behind him which includes all those already mentioned.

Great position to be in!

MOONEY

Ling or Mooney

Nobody else. Just these two blokes.

Let me say that again. If not Ling then Mooney!

(Ling captain, Mooney to do all public speaking engagements so we dont have to look at Linga too much!!)

Cam Mooney for captain?

Riight.

Don't you need someone who won't lose their cool?

I don't think he has what it takes to lead an AFL club.

Surley there has to better captain than cam mooney.

I thought him and bomber didn't really get along??

Lingy for sure, scarlet Fever would be up there too, but king is only 27!

He hasn't been too bad the last year or so. There was that run with the VFL umpire and he had a dirty game v. the doggies like the rest of the side, that's about all that comes to mind. He hasn't been any less disciplined than a Scarlett or Milburn have been.

The captaincy is another issue....

Refer to NAB cup grand final....I am sure you have watched it.

23 touches and 3 goals. Good on him.

Still he is nowhere near capable of being a successful AFL captain. Sorry but it's true. :)
