Quick quiz question: Since RTB started parking his car in the FFC head coach parking space, which current player has the highest winning percentage (qualification: minimum of 40 games played) ?

If you answered Nat Fyfe ….. sit down, he’s not even in the top 6.

I’ll give you a clue … he’s in this list: Ballantyne, Walters, Pavlich, Spurr, Sandilands and Hill.

Congratulations, you’re absolutely right … it’s Lee Spurr.

The following is a list of the 24 current players who have played a minimum of 40 games under RTB at FFC and their individual winning percentages.

*** Please note: This list is provided in good faith, with no underlying agenda. In reality the numbers are closely bunched, a function of being a very stable playing unit (23 players have played 50+ games from a possible 77 games). Use it to win a pub bet, don’t shoot the messenger.

Freo FC has played 77 games under RTB: 53 wins/1 draw/23 losses (69.5% winning percentage).

Spurr: Played 64 games – won 48/drew 1/lost 15 (75.8% winning percentage).

Walters: 43 - 32/1/10 (75.6%)

Ballantyne: 64 - 47/1/16 (74.2%)

Ibbotson: 52 – 38/1/13 (74.0%)

Sutcliffe: 51 – 37/1/13 (73.5%)

Suban: 61 – 44/1/16 (73.0%)

Fyfe: 57 – 41/1/15 (72.8%)

D. Pearce: 53 – 38/1/14 (72.6%)

Sandilands: 51 – 37/0/14 (72.5%)

Barlow: 71 – 51/1/19 (72.5%)

Mundy: 72 – 51/1/20 (71.5%)

McPharlin: 54 – 38/1/15 (71.3%)

Dawson: 64 – 45/1/18 (71.1%)

Hill: 65 – 46/0/19 (70.8%)

Johnson: 69 – 48/1/20 (70.3%)

Duffield: 71 – 49/1/21 (69.7%)

Mayne: 74 - 51/1/22 (69.6%)

FREO FC: 77 – 53/1/23 (69.5%)

Mzungu: 73 – 50/1/22 (69.2%)

C. Pearce: 56 – 38/1/17 (68.8%)

Crowley: 73 – 49/1/23 (67.8%)

Clarke: 57 – 38/1/18 (67.5%)

Pavlich: 61 – 41/0/20 (67.2%)

De Boer: 66 – 43/1/22 (65.9%)

Neale: 50 – 31/0/19 (62%).

The Neale figure is surprising, although there are several reasons which go some way to explain it.

Firstly, inexperience. Most of the other players had years of experience before RTB took over, Neale has played his entire career under RTB. Every player would tell you that they got better the more they played. Perhaps his own inexperience ‘dragged’ the team down to some extent.

Secondly, the ‘sub’ effect. Neale was starting sub 3 times in ’12, twice in ’13 and once in ’14. It’s a little unfair to ‘punish’ or ‘reward’ a player when they only play roughly ¼ of the game.

Disregarding 2012 (his debut year) and the three occasions he played less than 50% of the game in ’13 and ’14, his record becomes:

36 – 25/0/11 (69.4%).

Incidentally if you did the same for Sutcliffe (another who debuted in ‘12 and who was sub 8 times in ‘13) his record becomes:

39 – 26/1/12 (67.9%).

And if you did the same for Spurr (the only other player on the list who debuted in ’12) his record becomes:

51 – 38/1/12 (75.5%).

The Pavlich figure is a little interesting.

First guess was Hannath, then I saw the minimum was 40 games, so my next guess was Walter because he missed the transitional phase at the start of 2012. Pretty happy to be out by .2 of a percent

Just think, if I made the qualification six games ... it would have been Sylvia!! (6/5-0-1 (83.3%)).

Mind you he would have lost on a technicality - no longer a current player.

Congrats to RTB who this week becomes the 37th VFL/AFL senior coach to reach the 200 game plateau.

RTB is one of only 11 coaches to arrive at 200 games without a premiership on his cv. Malthouse won his first premiership in game 212, leaving only ten 200+ gamers without a flag. RTB and Bob Rose are the only two of those ten with multiple grand final appearances. Rocket Eade (319) has the most games without a flag.

Win or lose this week, RTB will reach 200 games with the second highest winning percentage of all time for the 200+ gamers (Dick Reynolds leads).

Barring the rookie coaches, RTB has the third highest winning percentage of the current AFL coaches, trailing only Chris Scott and John Longmire.

If (surely when?) RTB wins a flag he'll become the most experienced coach to finally win one, unless Eade somehow wins one with Gold Coast.

Psst, hey buddy wanna tip a winner?

Let me introduce you to the Carlton Factor.

Going back to their GWS game last season, every team that has played Carlton has lost their next match - 15 in a row.

Edit: Streak ended at 15 when those Port Adelaide bludgers were pantsed by Brisbane (cost me my pick 13).

6-0 and the view from the penthouse is sweet.

Shame about the riff raff neighbours. At least the body corporate had the decency to keep the next few floors beneath us vacant.

So where does a 6-0 start lead? To glory … and to despair … despair being the more common outcome.

Historically we are the 60th VFL / AFL team to begin 6-0. Only 17 of those teams have gone on to win the premiership.

Whilst a fast start is great, it’s the subsequent home and away finishing position which is all important.

Thirty eight of those 59 teams have finished h&a in the top 2 and have won all 17 of those premierships. Of the 21 teams who finished 3rd or lower, only 1967 Geelong went on to play in the GF.

Twenty two teams started 6-0 and finished minor premiers. They won 11 flags and were runners up 9 times as well.

Only 1973 Collingwood and 1976 Carlton started a season 6-0, finished h&a in top spot and failed to make the GF.

Sixteen teams started 6-0 and finished h&a in second place. They won 6 flags, were runners up 4 times and finished third on 6 occasions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What about the teams who started 6-0 AND were 2+ games ahead of the rest of the competition?

Since the VFL / AFL began in 1897, there have only been 5 teams from a possible 1442 who have found themselves in this position. (Roughly the same odds as seeing a ‘We love WADA’ banner at Windy Hill).

Those other four teams were: 1906 Carlton, 1907 St Kilda, 1924 Fitzroy and 1956 Melbourne.

Carlton finished h&a as minor premiers and were premiers that year. In fact they were a dynastic team (5 G/F’s in a row ’06-’10, including 3 premierships).

St Kilda finished fourth after both h&a and finals.

Fitzroy finished third after both h&a and finals.

Melbourne finished h&a as minor premiers and were premiers that year. They were also a dynastic team (7 G/F’s in a row ’54-’60, including 5 flags).

There have been 12 occasions where 2 teams both started a season 6-0. On five occasions those teams were 2+ games ahead of the rest of the competition: 1959, 1962, 1979, 1991 and 2009.

Their h&a / final finishing positions were:

1959: Car 2nd / 3rd; NM 6th / 6th.

1962: Mel 3rd / 3rd; Ess 1st /1st.

1979: Car 1st / 1st; NM 2nd / 3rd.

1991: WC 1st/ 2nd; Ess 6th / 6th.

2009: St K 1st / 2nd; Gee 2nd / 1st.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

History is only history, but for the 6-0, 2+ lead teams, there is an eerie correlation between their final home and away finishing position and their actual final finishing position.

Just a quick one this week.

Many of the stats we take for granted – inside 50’s, rebound 50’s, clearances, contested possessions/marks etc (along with the West Coast tranche: uncontested possessions and clangers) have only been recorded since the late 1990’s.

As time goes by, more and more ridiculous categories are being added.

The Selwood/Thomas legacy (head high free kicks) only came into existence in 2013.

The absence of historical data means that the ability to truly celebrate/ridicule old time players has been lost forever in the mists of time.

One stat which has only been in existence since 1999 is ‘goals outside 50m’.

Unbeknown to most, we are about to see a change in the leaderboard for this very valuable stat.

The current leaderboard looks like this:

All time (since 1999) leaders for most goals scored from beyond the 50m arc

1. Mr and Mrs Fevola’s son Brendan - 129.

2. Mr and Mrs Pavlich’s son Matthew - 128.

When the mighty Pav adds two more ball-tearers to his cv, give a special cheer, no one else will know why, but you will.

The ability to kick monster bombs is rumoured to be due to an abnormality in chromosome 19 and found only in men with the letter v as the third letter of their surname.

ASADA has launched a multi-million dollar research project to investigate whether this should be considered a performance enhancing trait. They are due to report in 2023.

The AFL’s Interim Report Committee has asked for an immediate interim report. When asked whether this could be seen as a cynical attempt to derail Freo's relentless charge for the flag, a senior Interim Report Committee member was quoted as saying "Huuuzzzzahh".

My favourite Pavlich 'bomb' was in 'that' Melbourne game at the 'G. Playing mid field he took the ball from the centre clearance, a couple of bounces and kicked a goal from inside the centre square. Ablettesque. Unfortunately I think it was the last goal we kicked for the game.

That was a cracking game. Pav played a massive game for us.

It's such an odd feeling seeing some past players in that video..feels like so long ago but I remember it pretty clearly. Lol Steven Dodd.

Other quick points:
Mora :( so Judd-like kicking that goal along the boundary from the stoppage.
Stephen Hill goals are still so great to watch
Classic MJ point at around 3min mark lol.

Such a delicious game of footy that Geelong vs Freo game.

Vintage Pav that game.

Brownlow votes were:
3. M Pavlich
2. G Ablett
1. A Sandilands

Still the best game I've attended ^^^ Masterclasses from the Pav and the Gaz, the start of the fanatical Freo pressure, Hilly with his usual assortment of running goals, McPhee kicking vital goals, Broughton schooling SJ, Mora's back to back blinders, high scoring game with heaps of lead changes in front of a pulsating crowd. Reigning premiers vs the plucky challengers. Just had it all.

Dodd blatantly pushing Chapman and Ablett over to allow Duff to kick the winner is something you never get sick of seeing, his best ever moment.

I was watching that and imagining what Ross could have done with Des Headland. He was such a talented player, but always looked to me like he was only doing what he had to do to keep his spot.

Shades of Sonny Walters?

Congrats to Dustin Fletcher on reaching the 400 game plateau.

A few stats re ‘Inspector Gadget’:

Debuted in rd 2, 1993 (3/4/1993):

No.1 single on the ARIA chart that week: “Are you gonna go my way” – Lenny Kravitz.
No.1 album on the ARIA chart that week: “Unplugged” – Eric Clapton.
Highest grossing movie that year: Jurassic Park.
World leaders at that time: US Pres – Bill Clinton; UK PM – John Major; Aus PM – Paul Keating.
Median house price in Perth that year: $112 750.

Some key numbers in Fletcher’s career:

399: Games played – 3rd most all time (Tuck 426, Bartlett 403)

13: Number of times found guilty by MRP / Tribunal (not including fines for wrestling, melees or the 2001 goal post shaking charge). First suspension came in rd 2, 1995 – also at the tribunal that night: Ross Lyon found not guilty of striking D. Jarman following a video review from the previous round. Perhaps they should have found him guilty – he suffered a career ending knee injury the following week.

20: Number of weeks suspended.

18: Number of different Brownlow Medal counts in which he has polled votes – 2nd most all time (R. Harvey 20).

151: Games played against non-Victorian teams – 2nd most all time (B. Harvey 162).

13: Played at least 13 games in every season of his career.

168: Number of games played after the age of 30 – 3rd most all time (Bradley 195, Tuck 190).

321: Played 321 of his 399 games in Victoria – MCG (185), Etihad (112), Waverley (13), Princes Park (9), Kardinya Park (1 – rd 21, 1993, the last time Essendon played Geelong at Kardinya Park) and Western Oval (1).

Last current player to:

Play a game v Fitzroy
Play a game v Brisbane Bears
Play a game at Western Oval
Play a game with or against Gary Ablett (Senior)

Played against every current AFL coach bar Rodney Eade and Phil Walsh.

Last remaining player born during the Whitlam government years.

1968: Number of players who have made their AFL debuts after Fletcher.
