Round 12
Round12.png

Games against the Wonders usually produce my favourite match threads, and this was no exception. Round 12 saw a lively match thread with opposition contributors including but not limited to damicky, @dogs106, Brenton Davy, Grand Uncle Horace, and Mozzie19. It's always enjoyable to post alongside our dear friend and ex-Demon (and Demon at heart) ClarkeM, and SSwans2011 and NinjaSwan (future Demons) are great value.

This game was all about sante, who was dominant from start to finish, and who by now was close to leading the Fred. In a high-scoring game, sante booted nine goals to lead us to a 48-point victory.

The game was quite close at quarter time (Demons by four points) and half time (Wonders by six points), but we kicked away in the second half, and it never really looked in doubt. Sim stand-outs included:
  • jmoo wan (21 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles)
  • Van_Dyke (27 disposals, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 1 goal)
  • Yakker (21 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal)
  • sante (9 goals, 4 behinds)
  • Heardy_101 (4 goals, 2 behinds)
  • Hate (15 hitouts, 20 disposals, 1 tackle, 1 goal)
  • Proper Gander (23 disposals, 12 tackles, 2 goals)
  • cooney (22 disposals, 7 tackles)
Prolific match thread contributors included Headless, sante, sausageroll, manangatang, Proper Gander, moginie, cooney, and haydo.

As the double-up fixtures continued, I think it's fair to say that neither team was particularly engaged in this thread. Despite that, we had the pleasure of coming up against the Furies, headed by ex-Demons and dear friends ImissFrosty, Pick, and Toump Ass.

On our side, match thread contributors included Headless, sausageroll, sante, and cooney.

The highlight of the week came when the weather became apparent - muddy, just as U2tigers had hoped:

The muddy conditions really had an impact, with only seven goals scored to half time across both teams. We were in front at the half by six points, but were smashed out of the park in the third quarter, trailing by 37 points at three-quarter time, and then a slightly more respectable 26 points at the final siren.

Given the conditions, there weren't too many prolific stat winners, but some of our better sim performers included:
  • haydo (16 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle)
  • sante (4 goals, 2 behinds)
  • cats2rise (11 hitouts, 9 disposals, 3 tackles)
Azarole and Heardy_101 each registered a grand total of zero disposals!

Round 14

I think it's fair to say the Demons and the Roys get along.

In Round 14, we shared an enjoyable thread with the likes of Mobbs (233 posts more than the next most), JackNah_8, Dingster, TedDougChris, and Wosh. On our side, sausageroll, Headless , manangatang, sante, Bluelegs, cooney, and moginie were up and about.

Wow - that's a lot of tags that a lot of people won't receive! Such was the excellence of the thread that I couldn't even remember who won the game until I checked for the purpose of this post. As it turns out, we registered an upset win, and were now back in the finals race.

The game was never really in doubt - we kicked four goals to one in the first quarter, then had a steady lead at every other change. In the end, we won by a convincing 42 points. Stand-out qooty performers included:
  • cats2rise (15 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle)
  • haydo (15 disposals, 3 marks, 2 goals)
  • DERO (17 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal)
  • Bluelegs (15 disposals, 5 marks, 3 goals)
  • sante (3 goals)
  • moginie (9 hitouts, 21 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackle, 2 goals) - having a cheeky run in the ruck
  • Proper Gander (21 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 goal)
  • cooney (17 disposals, 5 tackles)

Round 15

In Round 15, we came up against our dear friends: the Gumbies. It was apparently heritage round. If there's one thing I know about the Gumbies - and there are HEAPS of things I know about the Gumbies - it's that our match threads are generally pretty enjoyable. This was no exception - or, at least, that's what I recall many weeks later.

Prolific in opposition were our friends beez, Riviat, Falconista, GWS Goose, and Barrybran - a simply delightful bunch.

The game was cloudy, but our spirits were SUNNY. But then our spirits were also a bit cloudy at half time, as we were trailing by 20 points. Things didn't get much better from there, and we ended up losing the game by 26 points in what I think was game number 450 Headless - and beez's 400th!

Notable sim performers for us included:
  • DERO (19 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle)
  • DemonJim (19 disposals, 5 marks)
  • haydo (19 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles)
  • moginie (26 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goals)
  • Van_Dyke (20 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 goal)
  • Bluelegs (25 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal)
  • Hate (15 hitouts, 21 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 goals)
  • Proper Gander (20 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 goals)
  • cooney (15 disposals, 9 tackles, 3 goals)
And a very, very special mention to our terrific trio:
  • Yakker (0 disposals, 1 free against)
  • Heardy_101 (1 disposal, 1 free against, 1 behind)
  • cats2rise (1 disposal, 2 frees against)
Off the field and in the match thread, the likes of Headless, sausageroll, manangatang, cooney, Hate, and sante were up and about.

Winning this game against our dear friends the Royals would have been very, VERY handy for our finals aspirations - so, naturally, we lost convincingly. 🤗

In rainy conditions, The Filth Wizard, spookism, and SarahSmiles all kicked goals for the Royals before we put a score on the board. By quarter time, we'd conceded six goals, and were down by four. By the half, the margin was 39 points. By three quarter time, the Royals had extended the difference to 44 points, before we ended the game 38 points in the negative. A comprehensive loss.

The match thread was quiet in some respects, but you know the Royals will always produce quality, and that was the case with the likes of nahnah, krakouers, The Filth Wizard, CakeEater, and Marlowe. The most active contributors for the Demons were Headless, sante, Tarkyn_24, Hate, and Bluelegs.

Some stats from the game:
  • haydo (21 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal)
  • Van_Dyke (23 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles)
  • Hate (9 hitouts, 22 disposals, 3 tackles, 3 goals)
  • Proper Gander (17 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 goal)
On the plus side, I believe this round saw game 350 for sante, and game 250 for Van_Dyke.

Round 17

So the fate for an entire season for the Mt. Buller Demons came down to this very last match of the round. Win and we qualify for an unlikely finals berth (again). Lose and we go and eat a sandwich of despair.

We started the round in 9th position, just two points behind the Royals

We shared the week with a Swamprats side who were also able to leap into the finals with a win against us. Fortunately their posting helped to keep us entertained during the week, with strong contributions by new admin Kennedy Parker , philreich , GremioPower and a rare ShaunDuggan appeared!

The start to the game reflected what was at stake – nervous kicking and low scoring were reigning supreme in the first quarter, although we snuck to a 2 point quarter time lead. Another arm wrestle in the second quarter saw us down by 3 points at half time, and we narrowed this deficit to 2 points by three quarter time.

It all came down to the last quarter – we managed goals through DemonJim , Hate , PaythePerryman and Proper Gander and eventually wrestled our way to a 16-point win – we’d once again qualified for finals!

okeydoke7 had been shifted to Full Forward to achieve some sort of milestone or other, so naturally we played Tarkyn_24 at Full Back to slay his enemy. And slay he did.

Elimination Final
Elim18.png

For the 8th time in the past 10 seasons, we were playing finals again.

Our first final was away against the Las Vegas Bears, who have pleasingly not rebranded due to concerns about being too strongly linked to the de-licensed North Sydney NRL club.

We heard a lot from JoshWoodenSpoon , @father suns , Millky95 and @MWPP , and it felt good to be in the cut and thrust of another finals match thread. From our side, sante and sausageroll were up and about (the latter is a finals specialist, you see), while Headless and myself did our best to rattle the nerves of our hosts.

The game was a high scoring shootout (something I – as an earnest full-back – don’t really like to see). But the fans LOVED IT.

We shot out of the blocks early, taking a 3 goal lead into quarter time thanks to 3 first quarter goals from sante . The second quarter was more of a contest, with our lead whittled back to 15 points at the main break.

This lead was maintained through the third quarter, and we were never really headed thereafter, even extending our lead in the last quarter to 35 points before putting the cue in the rack and coasting to a 22 point win. Amazing stuff really from this plucky 8th-placed battler!

Some of our leading lights on the day included:
  • cooney (25 disposals, 9 tackles, 1 goal)
  • Hate (17 hitouts, 23 disposals, 1 goal)
  • moginie (24 disposals, 5 marks, 3 goals)
  • sante (4 goals from 6 disposals)

Semi Final
Semi19.png

Throughout this season, I’ve been developing a mindset that makes losing more fun. I call it ‘winning is for losers’, and it helps me feel better every time we lose!

I used that mantra a lot after this game against the Phoenix. It had been a long season and all of our hamstrings and arm muscles were WAY TOO TIRED FROM WORKING HARD and so I think that’s why we ultimately lost.

Look, it wasn’t really very close in the end and the way I saw it, with the winner going on to play the Bombers in a Prelim it wasn’t the worst result in the world.

It wasn’t a great day for individual-level stats, although we did have some performers who tried hard…
Onwards and upwards to Season 34!

Poster Of The Year
All the votes are counted now, so let’s take just a small breather before we show you who won!

This penultimate award of the evening really helps to recognise the efforts that are made by our teammates throughout a given season, via their contributions to match threads and the Sweet F.A. in general. Winners of the Mt. Buller Poster Of The Year award should really consider themselves the crème de la crème of the posting world.

Imagine being the best poster in the best club in the only Sweet F.A. in the world?

We had some wonderful contributors in Season 34, and I’ve loved watching our posting evolve as posters re-engage and share their sense of humour. You’re all ‘Buller People’ in the way you post, and I love watching you bamboozle opposition posters on the weekly.

As you might have gathered, there is a poster in our midst who has just completed one of the most remarkable individual posting seasons our club has ever seen. He’s done it all – media, match threads, team thread write-ups, PM quips, liking posts from 2014.

Of course, I’m referring to Headless , who has won our Season 33 Poster Of The Year award. I know I’ve said it before, but we love you Headless and simply won’t stop shouting it from the rooftop of the cheese room at Buller.

Congratulations on a stunning season mate.

So now onto our final placings in the Season 33 Deestroy Medal count. Seeing as the thread is filled with activity and mirth and merriment I think it's best we keep pressing on!

Congratulations once again to everyone who played this season, no matter how the SIM treated you.

Third Place
ANYWAY...

In third place - on 14 votes - is an incredible poster and person, and someone who excelled in a very difficult on-ground position this season.

Congratulations on your third placing Hate

Second Place...
In second place is a poster who once again earned an All-SFA place in Season 33, in an unfamiliar position. To be successful at transitioning from full forward to dominating in a midfield spot is a thing of wonder.

I refer of course to Proper Gander
