Caesar, if you buy the top of the line Air, it'll do everything you need it to do and more; they're bloody powerful machines now.

I doubt you'd need a desktop PC as well, just get a monitor and a TimeCapsule for storage.

Unless you're splitting the atom I don't understand why anyone would buy a PC over a mac.

and caesar you'll pick up how to use a mac in a couple of hours then wonder why you didn't make the switch sooner

I'm not sure a MBA would be sufficient for the serious youtube authors, especially those that do intensive video editing.

Without getting into the debate in that aspect, Macs aren't that outrageous price wise anymore.

Dell 15 Inch XPS with 2.7GHz i7, 8Gb RAM, 750GB 7200 HDD, 2GB Geforce: $1499

MBP 15 inch with 2.2GHz i7, 4GB RAM, 750GB 5400 HDD, 1GB AMD : $2200

The Dell is superior in every way (hardware wise) except the 3D card, which are comparable, and costs $700 less. And Dell is not exactly the most budget of PC brands.

You do pay for the lack of hassle with warranty and whatnot, but I've never had a warranty issue with a computer part anyway. Up to you whether OSX / other Mac advantages are worth the cost, which for some people they are.

Definitely a compelling argument for a notebook. When I bought an iMac last year, I wanted to rid myself of a myriad of cables and yet another tower. I was yet to try Windows 7, which I have since installed at work. I don't play games so that wasn't a deciding factor. No doubt that some apps have not and will not be written for the Mac, and for those, you have to decide whether you can do without them, find an alternative, or set up a Windows VM.

I'm considering buying a Macbook Air. I'm thinking that it would be the perfect laptop when travelling as, it is thin and lightweight. I'm not a fan of the iPad just because I want a keyboard when typing rather than one of those virtual pop-up keyboards.

It all depends on whether you are looking for a full O/S specced machine or the more lightweight internet/app intensive tablets /ipad.

If you are happy with a simple Android tablet with a keyboard that can be simply attached then the Asus Transformer might be worth looking at..

Otherwise if you do need a full OS on something fairly lightweight, then maybe the Dell Duo looks like a better option for you.

I'm not sure if there are any Apple products out there that have ios/keyboard options and the Apple Airbook may be an expensive option if it's fairly basic stuff!!

Anyone needing a password app, check out 1password in the Mac App Store.

Currently half price, but that's ending some time today. It's $20 and no you cannot transfer your existing licence over. Must have OSX Lion. If you want to take advantage of the discount but haven't upgraded to Lion, you can download on someone else's Mac that has Lion by logging in to the App Store using your Apple ID, then delete the app. 1password will then be on your account for when you do finally upgrade to Lion.

If you are on Lion and already have 1password (but not from Mac App Store), move 1password.app to the Trash then install from the Mac App Store.

Current desktop version is 3.8.5, Mac App Store version is 3.9 and that gets you a free upgrade to 4.0.

Personally I think the MBP's are a bit pricey, and too damn big! But as for the 13" Air w/ 128GB SSD, 4GB Ram and dual core i5 1.7Ghz @ $1,449 it's probably all you would ever need for in a laptop. Especially if there is a desktop in the house too.

1kg and 5-7 hours of batter life, I don't know of any other laptops that can match that?

FWIW I did just this yesterday.. and 2nd day in, i'm using the macbook air (13" 128GB SSD 4GB Ram) standalone without the PC..
Best decision I ever made and very happy with the size of it too.
The backlit keyboard is amazing.

I'm currently messing around with a Lion Server at work, with the view that it's going to replace our Windows server.

Not sure if I'm convinced yet, but I think it's more to do with me needing to spend a shitload more time figuring it out.

Do it mate.. you won't be disappointed. Once I migrate all the things I need (i.e docs, videos etc) I'll be good to go. In fact I leave for FIFO work tomorrow and will take it with me.

The backlit keyboard is amazing.

Can't remember which MBAs/MBPs had a backlit keyboard, but they updated the models and removed the backlit keyboard and potential customers were furious, so they put it back in the subsequent model.

The small storage space isn't so much of an issue, having 500gb on my PC laptop made me lazy.

If you don't have Dropbox, get it. If you use this link, we both get an extra 250MB.

And I'd recommend Space Gremlin and Broom for keeping on top of disk capacity.

Look out for discount iTunes cards and you will save money on purchases from the Mac App Store.

I just received my MacBook Air today, the $1,349 model. I was just after a high quality travelling laptop. I was interested in the ASUS Ux21 but, could not be bothered waiting another month. I'm very happy with it so far and look forward to seeing what else I could do with it.

Can't beat the DaisyDisk/CleanMyMac combo, 250GB HDD with only 80MBs left and using both these apps I got rid of 60GBs or complete rubbish.
